Absolutely cannot wait for the 20th to get here. Just finished the Demo on Switch and I have to say that everything here is top notch. Hope that the success that follows allows for a follow up to this. Definitely a hidden gem that was not on my radar 🥰
I'm glad short, concise RPGs are making a comeback. Of course, I love my huge epics and all, but there's still something special about a quest you can finish in a weekend. Hopefully, this'll get a physical before too long
While there's nothing inherently wrong with a lengthy RPG (especially if the developers put a lot of thought and care into it, like Xenoblade 3), I do relish a short-but-sweet experience, either as a momentary break or a pallet cleanser. Might pick this up on my Switch!
I'm glad to see someone reviewed this game. Been waiting for it for a while. In liked the short demo. Only complaint is the load times ,especially for battles was long. I will pick it up but I'm really holding out for a physical release.
I just finished Tokyo Mirage Sessions # FE Encore. After 55+ hours and nearly 2 real world months of play, any game can feel like it has outstayed its welcome.
As always, thank you, Alex, for the excellent review! I woke up to seeing a notification on my phone that this game released today, and immediately went to RUclips to see if your review was up. Can't wait to try this!
The short and sweet demo was awesome, so the game has been sitting on my wish list since then. But there are so many great games to look forward to this month! Jack Move, Monkey Island, Slime Rancher 2, Splatoon 3 (for the kids), plus I'm only about half-way through Soul Hackers 2...I don't have time for them all!
Love the breakdown of how the game works compared to traditional RPGs. Another well done review. Played the demo of this one and I loved it, so that coupled with this glowing review = a buy. Maybe not immediately, but definitely soon after I finish a few more games. Heh I'm having my own "backlog battle" and it's been going on for years.
I should buy this just because it came out on my birthday lol. On a serious note I think I will grab it to support this developer it looks pretty interesting. Hopefully it runs on steam deck.
An RPG doesn't have be lengthy to be good if it makes the most of the time it takes to play it. Cosmic Star Heroine is a great example of an indie RPG that is a short and sweet experience. At first I was a bit hesitant to check out Jack Move because I had seen it described as a combination of a rhythm game and an RPG, but after seeing your review that doesn't seem to be the case. I like the look and theme of the game and the jack move commands seem more similar to those of Sabin's blitz techniques from Final Fantasy VI than a rhythm game and I might actually find that to be fun. Thanks for the info on this and I will most likely being getting Jack Move in the near future.
Glad the game had a demo otherwise I wouldn’t have considered picking it up. Because I got to play a few minutes now I’m interested and other smaller games should do the same imo.
Awesome review, feel like I’ve been waiting for this forever but had no idea it was in development for ten years. Glad this labor of love seems to be as good as we’ve hoped, and bless short JRPGs, as always. Edit just to say: holy moly! One person did this! Extra incredible.
I'm likely going to wait for the PS4 version, but I really enjoyed the demo, so I will pick it up (I've been trying to push it on my brother's Discord group haha) Thanks again for putting this game on my radar! 😁
I don’t need a shorter RPG, I just need it to be good, whole, and it shouldn’t feel like a chore. Combat should be more than story. I can’t stand millions of text. This is was my only gripe with Persona 5. Too much talking! 😂
seems kinda similar to anno, instead of looking for brother, father xD. Tho I think I pass, the software, hardware, hack blah blah blah kinda annoys me.
I dont really like that it is so short. In my opinion games with a length of 10 hours or less are usually not worth playing. The story is either rushed or the world lacks the depth to make me care. I might check this game out at a sale
Do you feel the same way for other genres? I mainly ask because there are ways to have deep lore and depth to a world without necessarily making it long. If movies are able to do it in two hours for instance, I don’t see why games can’t. I also want to understand your perspective, moreso!
@@BacklogBattle Well first of all thank you for asking. I usually prefer a long running series over a movie because I feel like movies always rush stories. Aside of that I do indeed feel that way towards all genres. For example the newest God of War had the absolute minimum length I find acceptable and yet when I was finished, I felt like there should have been more. I really like to feel myself into the world and characters over a long period of time. As such I love jrpgs like Persona or crpgs like pathfinder.

I was lead animator/pixel art. Glad you enjoyed the game. Just wanted to let you know it was not a solo project though!
I've made the necessary corrections and will be reflected soon! Thank you!
Also, fantastic work! I loved what you did!
Nice work!
I am in awe of your work. I’ve always had a fascination with animation and seeing how meticulous the animation is… I am blown away

That’s a good platform to get it on!
I can confirm it boots and runs at 16 : 10 resolution on steam deck for anyone wondering.

I thought the loading times were going to be a bigger deal for me, and thankfully, it didn't!
INTERESTING, I'll definitely be adding this to my backlog in the morning, the combat of this game is the most interesting part to me tbh

You tried the demo right? It’s on Steam!
Ill definitely agree that the battle theme needed to play its cards a lot earlier in the track

Surely a short RPG like this has some room in that backlog, even as a side game!
No way they made a new Monkey Island game? I remember playing it when I was really young but I sucked so I never got far lol

Your comparison with Sabin’s Blitz in FFVI is pretty spot on!

A lot of shorter RPGs are doing this too. I recommend trying Voice of Cards The Isle Dragon Roars!
I'm loving these shorter modern day RPGs.
Same! And there’s more coming!
I want this to be an anime or OVA with that intro being so smooth
Right??
I love games like this. I also love the long ones. I love anything RPG it's my favorite genre.

I made a mistake! It wasn't a one person job! I'm editing the video to reflect this!
Awesome review - I picked it up based on your considered thoughts :)
Looks so beautiful, reminds me of eastward. Can't wait to play
I want to play through Eastward!
Been waiting for this since the demo
This game is INCREDIBLE! Short but sweet story no filler useless side stories thank god :D
But I am surprised it took a decade to make lol
man a party based game in this world would be so cool!
Definitely would!
It has an 80s vibe to it!
I was looking at this game yesterday. I’m going to buy it.
yeah, def gonna pick this up
This looks really good!
im kinda digging this, the art is nice, and the battle looks good
First time hearing about this, going to have to check it out.
Thanks for checking it out!

You're very welcome!
Will this ever get a physical release? This game is a vibe
Am I a sucker for party members in rpgs. Game looks good, but i need party members :(
7:42 Bet it's FF7
Just wanted to ask if the dialogue in the game was voiced or not?
It is not voiced
@@BacklogBattle Thank you!
i like the game but its duration is way too short. even zelda awakening was longer

Didn’t I say it in the video?
