Just picked up a 915 D3 for $100 off eBay, a perfect addition to the full set of Mizuno mp59’s I found there for $200. I’ll take a full bag of “old” nice clubs any day, looking forward to grabbing one of y’alls used TSi 3’s in 2027.
I feel like you are the only person that does not harp on distance. You seem to be the only person that focuses more on the advancements when it comes to forgiveness/consistency than distance. I feel that the industry would obviously see less sales if they would advertise 7 yards straighter than 7 yards longer. I guess marketing is king. Great content James! You and Gaz have taken over as my favorite golf channels! 2018 Mizuno ST180 for me... "Big Blue"
I like old school . I have no problem playing older equipment . I alternate between my 983e and 905s. For me, the looks and feel are more solid . Big things for me . I can still hit 290-300+ yard bombs- regularly. For me that’s really all you need out of a driver - I love them - never changing .
I think that a properly fit driver in the last 10+ years will yield similar results when hit on the sweet spot (thanks to limits on COR). Club makers have been able to improve distance on slightly off-center hits because of advancements in face technology. The biggest difference I've seen in the last few years is the ability to "tune" spin rates either with weights of different head options or both. I switched to a TSi3 last fall from a Callaway Epic Sub Zero.
Last year I replaced my D913 D2 (bought used) with the Cobra Speedback. I hadn't planned on buying a new club but after hitting the Cobra (with Hazardous Smoke 6.0 3.5 60g low spin shaft), and hitting it beautifully, I knew it was time to upgrade. The "demo" head and shaft that I hit did not have a mark on them. Since the Speedzone (which I also hit and did not like) had just come out, my local pro offered me the club I had just hit for $250. I couldn't pass it up. Still gaming it and still love it.
Kind of an older video now but lol. I have a srixon zx5 mkII I just bought used for $230 US. Last season (winter here in the northern US now) I played a cobra f8 paid $75 and loved it, still do! I also have a new Honma tr20 440 and Xp1 Honma, paid $119 new each, cobra speedzone extreme which I also like $75, and a original Wilson persimmon driver free lol. I grew up hitting the wood woods and sometimes will still pull it out. I'm not great at a 9.3 handicap and I do not golf seriously.
I bought an ST 200 Mizuno driver last year having always used a Ping G2.. liked it and then bought my mum a 915 d2 and tried it once and knew straight away it was the driver for me and I don't actually like the mizuno, unless you middle it. The weight, the look of it and the simple design and the sound and incredible feel of it make it perfect for me. No silly movable weights or anything on it too. Love it
It’s a piece of metal on a stick with a certain loft. They really can’t make it go that much longer year after year. People getting too caught up in marketing
I had a Titleist driver in my bag since the 905r was released. The 915 D3 I played until recently was the best. There has been a limit on the COR for years now but design advances in face construction have greatly expanded the area of maximum COR. The big advance of the last few years has been spin optimisation. You hit a 915d3 in the high toe area of the face insert and it’ll knock spin down and add anther 10 yds to the carry. ( I’m not good enough to do this to order but it’s a nice surprise when it happens).
Just bought TSI2 yesterday from my 7 year old 915 D2. I have to be honest there is a big difference. I picked up 15 to 20 yards and 3mph club head speed. Now new shaft is a little lighter but really goes down the middle much easier. I don't mind an upgrade every 7 years.
Still playing the 910 D3 because I haven't found a better driver but I have just ordered the new TSI3, in testing it was ultra straight and easy to play! Got some good numbers with the Mizuno but didn't like the address position.
I’m currently using a Taylormade SLDR. Yes I need a new one I know. Just replaced my 3 wood first. Paid 100 bucks Canadian for the SLDR. I’d love a new one no doubt.
Got fitted last year for ts3 8.5 degree hzrdus smoke 5.5 shaft.Absolutely love the lower trajectory, piercing flight it gives me. In mid 2000's used to hate drawing someone in club competition playing Cobra driver with the high tinny ping sound off the club face.
2016 Taylormade M2 with a 44.25" Hzrdus Black 6.5 X, a 12 launch 2200 spin fairway finding machine (but gave up distance for fairway finding with that board of a shaft at that length), and I just upgraded to the Callaway Max LS 9-degree head, weight slightly in the toe, which produces similar launch numbers, but playing 45.5" it was giving me 8 more yards carry. The increased head stability is allowing a longer shaft - to me, that is the 'progress' that has been made.
There is definitely a leap forward for me from a Titleist 910 D2 to a 2017 Taylormade M1, both in distance and forgiveness. After that it’s more about the aesthetics rather than a measurable gain. Bling counts for much kudos (even you love to unwrap a shiny new club) but lower scores come from hard work.
Currently playing the 913, was hitting it well last season and now haven't played since before Christmas because of lockdown, keep looking at new drivers but keep telling myself why change if it works
Well done doing it with the same shaft. I think it goes to show, once again, that you don't have to spend a fortune on gear if you can find good used ones. Oh, and still have the 2017 Wilson D300 with no intention to change. Rather try to spend that money to actually play more this summer.
@@dennishammer8537 I went with an online fitting (through 2ndswing.com) do to the fact the closest fitting center is in a different state and we are not able to travel across state lines without quarantine yet. The indoor golf is supposed to open within a week or so, then I'll actually be able to hit it. I love the look and feel. I am playing it at 45" with the Tensei AV Raw Orange shaft so it is about 3/4" shorter than the standard with the Ping shaft. The only advice I can give is have fun at the fitting and good luck.
Thanks very much.our indoor sims just opened last week. Thought I would also try a shorter shaft, heard good things about them Appreciate your response. Happy playing.
Another enjoyable video James. Currently gaming the Callaway Mavrik that I got fitted for last year and if I had the money I would change again this year just because I love having the latest equipment in my bag (I love shiny new things). I will hopefully be upgrading next year 🙏🙏
TS3 here, replacing a TM M6 which I couldn’t get on with despite a positive fitting for it. Bought it discounted just after the TSi3 was launched. Gained a lot of confidence with the TS3 prior to lockdown and looking forward to getting out and hitting it at the end of March 🤞
I love my 915 D3, best driver I've ever owned. It feels great and I actually really like the sound of it. I've tried the newer Titleists, TM M series and Epics but still prefer the 915.
It really only sounds bad if you miss hit it. When I really crunch one out of the middle it actually is quite muted. The noise that some call annoying could probably be fixed by a pro club builder and some hot melt.
Best drive I've ever hit was with a King Cobra Ti - late 90's driver were they? Smashed one down the tenth at Dewsbury, then put a 5 iron through the back of the green. Good old Nigel Hirst worked his magic on my dodgy swing. Played the back nine level par - handicap was 21 at the time. Don't even want to contemplate how far I couldn't hit that driver now. ;-)
Came here to say I’m a 2 handicap and picked up a used 915 last year…. Never been more consistent off the tee tho I do find I spin it a fair amount .. might need myself a new shaft
I played a 915 D3 for 3 years before switching to TM M3. The 915 had a sweet spot that was high and slightly toe. If I struck one there it definitely felt like an off centre hit but I was always surprised to see the ball carrying 10-15 yards longer than a centre hit. I think it might have been due to the construction of the club face that I was getting extra ball speed and reduced spin in that particular spot.( club regulation tests are on measured in the middle). If I was good enough to hit that shot to order the 915 would still be in my bag.
I use the d15 d2 and that high toe sweet spot, is definitely the hottest portion of the clubface. This is great for me, as I have always hit driver " high toe ". Many other drivers don't perform as well, hitting off this strike location.
I have used ping g400 for the last 4.5 years and just started playing g425 - the distance with each club is the same but the g425 travels further when I hit low on the face. I verified this on trackman and gc quad.
Just taken Golf back up after25 years and bought 915 off ebay £108 not been hit very much as previous owner didnt like it i love it and i think it was a good deal would like peoples opinion
I’ve hit a lot of drivers on launch monitors and they all suggest same distances (or there abouts) and similar numbers for all of them but then on course I’ve noticed up to 20m difference consistently. So do you think you’d see the same comparison on course?
Very interesting James, thanks for doing the comparison! I'm planning on being fitted for a new driver this upcoming season. Currently rocking a Great Big Bertha from 2015 (that I wasn't fitted for), so that's about the same gen as the 915 you were using. I'd expect the newer driver to be a bit more forgiving & this time I'll be fit for it as opposed to ordering one online.
Just got a Mizuno ST 200 last fall. Played 9 holes last week. Of the 7 holes i hit driver, 6 fairways hit, 1 missed ( by a foot, more to do with my alignment).
Very interested in the results. I moved from 917 to TSI3 and have seen significant progress. I think it's a combo of maybe being a bit more flexible now having done some gym work but certainly hitting it 25 yards further and at least as straight. Absolutely love it. If only I was allowed play it.... (hopefully 5th Apr here in Ireland).
I currently use wilson deep Red fat shaft driver. It used to be my dad's I'm. Looking to change though, just checked out the 915 & 917 d3s on golf bidder can pick one up between 150 & 200 which suits my budget
Changed from TM R9 recently to Ping G25. Much netter direction with G25. But you can hear it also :) Must say TM had S flex shaft and Ping has reg flex .
I had an M1 440 tour driver that I Loved and would absolutely still be using had I not cracked the face...But I did. Luckily(?) Taylor made gave me a free M5 head when I did it. Not so luckily, My launch and spin have both been WAY too high since I got it. I actually have a fitting set for this weekend with Titleist to test the new TSi4 driver that I am hoping solves that problem. (Its the smallest CC driver I could Find on the market here in 2021)
Gaming a 915d3 with an Aerotech Claymore MX48 shaft (bought it with Aldila Rogue 70TX for £150) but will maybe look at a TSi3 or a G425 LST later this year.
Nice idea , Different . would like too see " Other " tests , for example push Trolleys or E- Trollys, Different Standbags , Gloves even " Cheap Cources
Still using the Callaway 512 BB ∆∆ that I've had for 7 years. Tested all the new Callaway heads with the Matrix shaft in my 512. No improvement in distance or dispersion.
I’m in this exact predicament. Im playing a 915 D3 and wondering if I should switch to the TSi line. I still hit my 915 over 300 yds on good hits, but when i miss the sweetspot it, boy does it go sideways. I think I’ll go test out a demo, just based on the sound, and few extra yards on mishits.
I'm using a Titleist 917 D2 10.5, set to B1 which Flattens the Lie, with a Diamana Blue 70 gram S shaft. This replaced a Titleist 983 E 9.5 in the Spring of 2017. ($399 US)
I play the Yonex Exone XPG HD driver with the Ezone XP Superlite shaft in it. I've had it for 4 years, having bought it s/h from Golfbidder for £150! I'm not swapping as there isn't enough difference between then and now to make a major difference IMHO!
Ts 2 bought it 18 month's ago .Had a look at tsi2 just before lockdown &was offered £100 trade in by my pro .l think will be gaming my Ts 2 a bit longer
I play a 2014 915D3 and I have been thinking about updating this year. The case isn’t compelling from your test (I am more than used to the sound) but it feels like time! The question is, what to get?........ Waiting for my fitting centre to re-open so I can test a few. Dispersion is my main criterion, with adequate distance.
Still using a 913D2 but have already bought a Mavrik in lockdown based on a demo from back in the summer. I've also bought 5 different shafts just so I can have a play to find ultimate control and ball speed when we at last get to go to the driving range etc. We will see if it helps or not?!!
I’m still crushing the 905t, although I bought a 917 d3. The customization potential gained me no distance to speak of, and I just love the pro force shaft. I can’t afford a ts so maybe I will try one next year or something.
I think it’s just about finding a set up that works for you and your game, the gains have been marginal if that, going back 10 years + with drivers since rules came in limited how ‘springy’ the face could be etc. Just looks Bryson winning the AP invitational with a king cobra ltd that came out in 2015, it’s set up that works best for him. Plus if you take these clubs you tested out on the course those few yards difference on a launch monitor can look vey different with where the ball lands, pitches and rolls on the course, seen this so many time
Good test James, i have a TM R1 in the bag from 2012 paid about £300 for it, thinking of changing for a new one but nothing is adding yards or accuracy when i have tested them.
Really enjoyed this. I’ve been hoping to see this very comparison for a while. Thanks mate. Also, have you looked at the ZX7 Srixon at all? I’d be keen to see what you think of that as well
if i werent on staff, id have stopped at the original epic sub zero 4 years ago. Depends i guess, i feel like Titleist just got into the "ball speed game" this past year or so where theyve always been known to be a little spinner for more control. Great vid, would be curious to test some companies who have been more focused on speed like callaway and taylormade 👍 The aero era compared to the ball speed era hmmm
Just been fit for the TSI3 to replace my 915 D3 which I’ve really enjoyed using past seasons but the TSI3 gives me more potential. Off centre it’s still a good miss and when you put a good swing on it there’s so much more in the locker.
108/110 CHS, got my mizuno st200 last year and I love it and I don't plan on upgrading 😁 wondering if its a good idea to buy mizuno irons online because custom fittings are cancelled till May 🤔
Have Rogue only changing if there is something as long or better but must be easier to hit. One thing is do I need the ability to alter settings as have had 2 drivers which were costly yet have had no need to change from initial setup.
I had the 915D2... still one of my favourite drivers I've had. I can confirm they weren't very forgiving with off center hits, because when I did button it, it went miles. I can't see any difference in this department with the modern stuff... current gamer is the Epic Flash and G400SFT before that. PS. Rubbish Man Utd just stuffed champions elect Man City 0-2 😉
Have the Titleist 915 D3 in my Titleist bag, and the Hogan GS53 Max in my Hogan bag. I am still more consistent with the Titleist, but the Hogan is longer.
I just upgraded to TSI3 from 915D2 and I have seen my drives be less spinny but also used my same 915 shaft on the tsi3 because i got a great deal but it was too heavy for me , x stiff and .5 inch longer and it was throwing me off
Great video James. Could you follow this up with the shaft that was sold with the drivers at the time of purchase? Then swap them around to see how much stock shafts have changed over the 6 years. Could the newer shaft make the difference?
Playing callaway XR speed, with Kuro kage shaft.... have tried others, get maybe an extra cpl of yards.... not enough to warrant paying out 400-500 for another one....
James , I just came across this video, I am still using 915 D3,, I have a question on he mobile weight vs the shaft stiffness. My max swing speed 105mph, I have the 70g shaft, I recently experience the weight from 9g 14g to 23g! I feel I like 23g! Do you have experience trying different weights?
Just picked up a 915 D3 for $100 off eBay, a perfect addition to the full set of Mizuno mp59’s I found there for $200.
I’ll take a full bag of “old” nice clubs any day, looking forward to grabbing one of y’alls used TSi 3’s in 2027.
Same here!!

2018 Mizuno ST180 for me... "Big Blue"
My driver is about 2 weeks old and I paid way too much for it but hey I love me some bling
I'm 61 and I'm still playing my 905r. I'm averaging about 270 of the tee and my handicap is currently 5.5.
I just bought a used 915D2 two weeks ago and I love it. Superb driver and I saved many bugs.
still using the 915d2 and was almost tempted to treat myself to an upgrade, think i’ll save my money
I like old school . I have no problem playing older equipment . I alternate between my 983e and 905s. For me, the looks and feel are more solid . Big things for me . I can still hit 290-300+ yard bombs- regularly. For me that’s really all you need out of a driver - I love them - never changing .

That’s interesting. I’ve seen a few videos like that where they show not much difference between old and new.

Just ordered a TSi D2 ... currently using a 915 D2, so yes... I'm watching intently!
... I liked my 909, and still give it a go from time to time, as I preferred the sound and solid feel. Tried a Ping 425, now THAT'S a horrible sound!

I’d love a new one no doubt.
In 2020 I upgraded from the Titleist 910 to the TSI3 with hazdous smoke 6.0 shaft. And. Love it.

Well done doing it with the same shaft. I think it goes to show, once again, that you don't have to spend a fortune on gear if you can find good used ones.

Just upgraded from a 2016 M2 to the Ping G425 Max. Now I can't wait for the snow to leave so I can get on the course.
Hi, I have a fitting scheduled in a week For the 425.
Are you happy with it, any advice?.
I also have to wait for the snow to melt.
Thought I would also try a shorter shaft, heard good things about them
Appreciate your response.

Cobra F9 Driver currently, I struggled at first with it but once I changed to the low spin settings I have a flat trajectory and easy to keep in play.
I bought the 915 this year as I’m relatively new to golf, excited to try it this summer 😄
Just taken Golf back up after25 years and bought 915 off ebay £108 not been hit very much as previous owner didnt like it i love it and i think it was a good deal would like peoples opinion

Currently playing a 2009 TaylorMade Burner...working on my swing has produced much better results then updating the tech.
two drivers that can still compete with most today are the Adams A4 9015d and the Bridgestone J33r. Put a modern shaft in them and test that...
Just changed from 915 D3 to TS3. Gained 15 to 20 yds. Sound from TS 3 is awesome. Off center hits stays longer and straighter than the 915.
Just bought a 915d3 for$120 , hits like a dream! Club looks new as well .
Just got a Mizuno ST 200 last fall. Played 9 holes last week. Of the 7 holes i hit driver, 6 fairways hit, 1 missed ( by a foot, more to do with my alignment).

Still playing the 915d2, too good to give up so far. Using a 43.5" Rogue Black and its quite consistent and long.
Great video James. I'm still gaming a 2000 Ping G2 10.5° Grafaloy shaft.
The G2 Driver came out in 2004. The TiSi was their main driver in 2000. Aside from that, the G2 is still a good driver.
Loved my old G2. Do you think you'll stick with yours?
I had the ISI, TISI and the the G2. I now play a SIM 2 Max with a Ventus shaft. I still hit the G2 farther but the SIM is a fairway finder.
(Its the smallest CC driver I could Find on the market here in 2021)
2009 Taylormade Burner. I like it just fine, but probably ready for an upgrade. Thinking Cobra F8 or F8+. Going to try them out this summer.
TSI3 in the bag now, much preferring it to Mavrik SZ I had... picked TSI3 up 2nd hand for a comparative bargain 😂
Starting lineup is a TS2 10.5. Kuro kage shaft. On the bench- 915 d3,910 d3 and a 975D.
Haha nice!!.. my lineup..Tsr2 10°..915 d2@9.5..910d3@9.0.. 975-J @9.5.. 975D @ 7.5
Currently playing 913d2 and upgrading this year to the tsi3, or the sim2 depending on performance during fitting
Still using the Callaway 512 BB ∆∆ that I've had for 7 years. Tested all the new Callaway heads with the Matrix shaft in my 512. No improvement in distance or dispersion.
Am using the big Bertha 816 double black diamond. Can’t see me changing it this season either.
I'm still gaming a Taylormade R9 FCT.. 9.5 stock shaft. Almost time to upgrade
Ts 2 bought it 18 month's ago .Had a look at tsi2 just before lockdown &was offered £100 trade in by my pro .l think will be gaming my Ts 2 a bit longer
the lofts are different, that skews the test results to start with but really like your swing James.
Why oh why did you mention the song Happy? Ugh, it’ll take a week to get that out of my brain. Great video and wonderful comparison.
I'm currently hitting the 913d3... im hoping to get fitted for new clubs soon!
My Driver is a Taylor Made M3 . I also have a Titleist 913 F witch I would like to see compared to a modern day 3 wood 👍
Not changing M5. New shaft last year Fugi PRO 2. felt good all year.
Perfect , these are the exact 2 drivers I have and want.
I got my driver in 2005 Callaway Big Bertha, this year I'm looking at the new Ping driver, I think it's about time to upgrade.
Plus if you take these clubs you tested out on the course those few yards difference on a launch monitor can look vey different with where the ball lands, pitches and rolls on the course, seen this so many time
I have a cobra speed ld that I have had since 08, and I absolutely crush it. I don't think ill be upgrading until it breaks.
983k titanium fujikura speeder x stiff..love it still
James . Would like you to show where you hit on the face an match up with the shots so we can see what happens when you don't hit in middle of face.
Just been fit for the TSI3 to replace my 915 D3 which I’ve really enjoyed using past seasons but the TSI3 gives me more potential. Off centre it’s still a good miss and when you put a good swing on it there’s so much more in the locker.
Still have the 915? Looking for a driver😂
I have this driver and I’m going tomorrow for a new fitting. Very interested in seeing my gains and shaft replacement.
Still using the 915D3 but looking to change when I find something better.
Picked up a Calloway Bertha mini 1.5 a few days ago, also an epic flash 3 hybrid which replaces my 4 or 5 iron that I was using last year
I paid $100 for the mini and a burner 3 wood marketplace deal, bought the hybrid new a few weeks ago for $200
I tried a couple thrift store drivers last year, old Ram driver and some generic driver, couldn't hit a fairway to save my life with either
Nike Sumo 5000 9.5 degree driver.
Avg distance 305 carry.
It was 20 years old from new (TM 360ti) and recently upgraded to a Cobra Speedzone.
Have the Titleist 915 D3 in my Titleist bag, and the Hogan GS53 Max in my Hogan bag. I am still more consistent with the Titleist, but the Hogan is longer.
Yep I'm still with my Titleist 915 D3.
Playing the Ping G410, but played many Titleist drivers over the years.
I just upgraded to TSI3 from 915D2 and I have seen my drives be less spinny but also used my same 915 shaft on the tsi3 because i got a great deal but it was too heavy for me , x stiff and .5 inch longer and it was throwing me off
Still gaming 915 D3 upgrading as soon as custom fitting becomes available again
Great video James. Could you follow this up with the shaft that was sold with the drivers at the time of purchase? Then swap them around to see how much stock shafts have changed over the 6 years. Could the newer shaft make the difference?
Would have been nice to have at least made an effort to use the same or very similar shafts. That way it would be head to head. Literally.
@@scottmackey4182 , James did use the Same Shaft in Both Heads.
Then he put his old Shaft from the 915 into the TSI for the last couple of shots.
Playing callaway XR speed, with Kuro kage shaft.... have tried others, get maybe an extra cpl of yards.... not enough to warrant paying out 400-500 for another one....
$36.00 for a Hogan C-S3 8.5* w/hc and new grip. SASGolf taught me how, thx Simon!
Titleist 913 D3 in 7.5; bought new for about $400
definitely looking for a new TSI3 or TSI4, but can't justify spending $700+ to get one in my specs
My driver is a Yonex nanospeed 3i and is about 10 years old. Time to upgrade I feel!!
grabbed a mizuno st200 for 200 cdn (115 pounds roughly) with a tensei white shaft. Might as well try it out for that price.
That's correct james , we can ant to see the head comparison , it feels more of a real review when both heads have the same shaft z it's more accurate
