Here is the one of the early 'demo' versions of Steve Dahl's "Oh Wally" with some different lyrics from the final version. It was about WGN radio personality and morning competition Wally Phillips that Steve spent a fair amount of time ripping on. The song is a parody of the Barry Manilow (or as Steve would call him "Barely A-Manilow") song "Mandy" a soft rock hit from 1974.
There was obviously a Steve Dahl and Wally Phillips rivalry as Steve represented the new 'young' talk radio in Chicago while Wally was a staple of Chicago radio but more representative of an older generation of listeners, as was Wally's station WGN during that era (it still is somewhat despite now having Garry Meier!) Wally was also the guy to beat in the ratings as he had a long-time entrenched fan base in the morning, so it was an easy rivalry to have occur. (Steve and Wally mended fences many years later at Wally's retirement party but there was an on-going feud for many years before that.) The voice in the song was Steve's character "The Lady From Tinley Park" who was a generalizaion of the 'old ladies' that listened to Wally and WGN ("Wally, I need directions to O'Hare..." "Wally, there's too many Negroes downtown..." )

The irony is that, by the time Wally Phillips died, he and Dahl had become friendly.Dahl wrote a really sincere and moving tribute to him.
LOL! I lived in the Chicago area then. Hysterical.
As I recall reading it, Steve and Wally were dining in the same restaurant one night when he sent Wally a bottle of the finest wine they had with a note, essentialy admitting Wally had bested him, and to "get drunk on this fine wine so I have a shot at being better than you." Wally was gracious in an on-air reply, thanking Dahl and burying the hatchet.
But to those of us who grew up having to listen to Wally with our parents, Dahl's arrival in Chi-town was a breath of fresh air.
So, this appeared in my recommended list today (10/23/22). I left Chicago in Nov 82, and I LOVED Steve & Gary! Thanks for this, I remember it like it was yesterday! I even remember his on-air vasectomy, on VAZ1000. Thank you!

@@LanceGrey I watched it LIVE on TV!.
Not For Midgets Only? I just watched that
The best 4!hrs of radio I’ve ever heard. Comedy genius!
I remember when Dahl would read Ann Lander's column aloud on the air. He'd do the "lady from Tinley Park" voice for the letter writer and then respond doing an Ann Landers impression. He'd also read Kup's column aloud doing a Georgie Jessel impression as the voice of Irv Kupcinet.
Gawd I'd forgotten the Irv imitation and Ann Landers, it was hilarious.
Dahl would imply that Kup would drop names in his column to get comped meals ... "Happy birthday to Ronald McDonald" 😂
* @@acemulligan7010 ~> I was at How Lee's Chinese carry-out on Lincoln Avenue near Fairfield Avenue (Chicago) when Kup came in to pick up an order. 🙂
The voice was like someone eating oatmeal while it drooled down their chin.
Fred Winston imitation was hilarious, too.
Pra prop prop prop pra pra.
His Eddie one almost made me pull over at times, so pathetically on point.
I remember hearing this on the radio in the morning, as well as Steve & Gary doing bongs! Awesome thank you for posting!
Haven't found "RTA" yet... :(

my mom was such a wally phillips fan! Good memories Steeb! Thanks for the mammaries!
+Joey J ~> My aunt was also a Wally fan. LOL at Steve Dahl calling Wally's attire a lesion suit. ☺
My grandmother too! She LOVED listening to Wally Phillips..
Does anyone remember or have the song Steve did about Gary Dodson and Cathleen Crowell Webb, titled "11x3"?
"Only a brahma bull could leave such a semen stain."
Gary Dodson inspired me to move to Cralorado.
I wish they all could be Wheaton college girls.😅
@@oldrustycars Turns out she was lying about everything.
Today Dahl is on an all talk/no music AM station. He's turned into Wally! ☺
They always made fun of the WGN guys and even in the early days you knew they'd eventually migrate to WGN style DJs as they got older. They made fun of their own format, they made fun of the other DJs where they worked.
525Lines ~> At least Dick Biondi is still on a music channel and knows when to shut up and play some music. Sadly Dahl who started his anti-Disco campaign in favor of the music his listeners prefer is now so full of himself that he's become all talk and no music. What a jerkazoid. I'd love to call him to request a gift for my wife or a dinner for 2. ☺
WytZox1 I liked the balance between music and Steve. Steve played music all through the Steve & Garry years. When he wanted to do a bit, he had Garry and all kinds of guests and regular call-ins to keep things going. He played beautifully off others. His interviews have always been excellent, have you noticed? He never got credit for the quality of those interviews. Everybody was at ease. As he turned into "Steve Dahl, Radio Genius" the show suffered and many of us tuned out but one can only imagine the pressure of keeping a personality radio show going.
525Lines ~> That's why I now prefer listening to the Loop (WLUP-FM) where all their DJs play classic rock without any overdone Dahl, Mancow or Stern jibberish. As I said I respect the guys who never forget why their fans liked them in the 1st place ~ FOR THE MUSIC! ☺
WytZox1 I was a S&G fan from Disco Demolition on and can tell you I enjoyed their segments more than the music but the mix was acceptable. The other shows, mancow, stern, etc. I can't stand those guys. Dahl in his prime was a special case. All the imitators that came later were just so far off the mark.
Please post the original, I've been looking for this for years ! Thanks for sharing the demo-I saw Steve & teenage Radiation several times-they played my HS and also at Chicagofest 1983 opening for Cheap Trick. GREAT times !
If you saw Teenage Radiation you knew the best parody was the Stones' Satisfaction, complete with prop.
Fricken fantastic, thanks again for this gem.
Someone stop me from listening !😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂
Man, we sure had it good. Can't make it through, too much at once.
Awesome. Thanks for posting this.
I saw Steve doing this song on his TV special wearing a housedress and a wig, looking like a middle-aged housewife from Tinley Park, IL. LOL
The irony is that eventually Dahl, in his way, became "Wally Phillips"
I live in the Detroit area and listened when he was on W4. He went to Chicago but then he had the show piped in to Detroit and one other city. I have the album that has "I'm a wimp" There was one day that Steve was playing all his songs, and I recorded it. But I've never heard this one before. And I have no idea who Wally Phillips is. .
Wally was a very famous radio talk host on WGN radio here in Chicago
The HS shows were in 1980 when he was still on WLUP too. I think I have some pics of him in the yearbook dressed as Elvis.
Wally Phillips invented the radio "Drop" back in the 50's.
Nice to hear this early version
He should have made this song for Wally George.
the original song is called is Mandy
Yes we know, Steve and Garry recorded many parody songs.
Do you still bogart?
no one has posted a vid of him actually doin the song singing it this is ok but i want to see steve do it....
excellent
Should have been on Dr. Demento.
but they eventually made up..
That's Weird Al Yankovic with "Oh Wally" from 1977.
Actually it's Steve Dahl.
