      I'm from the US, and different parts of my country are the same way regarding cultures varying. I think that's normal for a sufficiently large country. On the topic of kids learning new languages quickly, I have no evidence to back this up, but I think the children's shows and other media targeted towards their young demographic plays an extremely important role for children learning their language, and I feel that watching a children's show that is dubbed in the language that you want to learn may lowkey be a decent strategy for those of us who are no longer kids. I say this because kids shows generally don't tend to have complex sentence structures or advanced vocab because they're targeted towards kids who are very young and only have a base level understanding of their language. So I think that an older person, trying to learn Indonesian for example, would get a lot more education wise out of watching a kid's show dubbed in Indonesian rather than an Indonesian movie made for adults, because the kids shows will be able to test/teach a beginner Indonesian learner at a more comfortable level and the barrier of entry for this media is far lower. My parents used this strategy for me in order to teach me our family's native language (Indonesian) while I was growing up in Australia. I remember that I would watch all the same shows that my friends did like Barney the Dinosaur, expect the versions that I'd watch would be dubbed in Indonesian. I'd like to think this strategy worked and has some merit.
    Also wasn't trying to downplay the intelligence of kids when I said kid's shows had a low barrier of entry. I'm aware that they're fast learners and are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.
    TL;DR: if you want to learn like a child, consume children's media

    • @user-xx7nv1lh3u
      @user-xx7nv1lh3u 2 года назад +1

      Appreciate this, I think I'll use this strategy to learn more languages

    • @Endershock1678
      @Endershock1678 2 года назад +1

      There is some truth to that yes. Okay, so I'm speaking as a polyglot and a foreign language addict. I speak Vietnamese, Japanese, and plan on speedrunning learning French in about a year.
      I think for kids learning quickly, children's material is a bit part of it. One advice I constantly give to people trying to learn a new language is to start from where a kid does and go from there. I read a good amount of children's books and children's manga when learning Japanese, and often watch relatively easy anime to learn very basic structures. Of course, it's less effective with Japanese because of things like Keigo, but it still gives you a basic grasp to build on. It also helps if you are forced to learn it with no lifelines and that kids have no shame. One of the best ways to learn is to literally repeat people say and be corrected on what it means, but obviously, it's more embarrassing to just say a word wrong as an adult, so it's harder to get used to it.
      Another thing is that when kids learn one language, it kinda locks your brain into the patterns of that language. Let's use a simple analogy. It's like if you main... Wii Fit in Ultimate, you are gonna build habits that only Wii Fit players have, and if you only play Wii Fit for 10 years, you aren't gonna be able to pick up other characters very quickly. It's the same with languages, you are so used to patterns with say English, that trying to understand nuance for Japanese or gendered words for French just becomes a nightmare. That's why they say the more languages you learn, the easier it gets. My classmates hard struggled with French while I breezed through it because they were stuck on English grammar, whereas my trilingual brain thought "okay, this part is kinda like English, but this part is kinda like Vietnamese and this part like Japanese" and worked it out so much, I straight up competed against the whole class some days.

    Personnally, I learned english only with like youtube videos (yours included) and shows in english like two years ago, (i was born in france and i always talked french) and i remember that the first time i watched a video with only native english/american etc. people talking and i didnt undestand ANYTHING but with perseverance and practice (still only with youtube and shows) i was almost bilingual in a few motnhs! i also started when i was like 11 so idk if that falls into the whole 10 year old and before thingy but now my teachers and i consider myself as bilingual and all that with youtube! Also one of the advantages of learning with youtube is the fact that you learn the "spoken english" what i mean by that is that english and most languages you learn in school/classes etc. isnt the one that you're gonna like hear in the street or anything, people will still understand you but having a conversation with a native speaker of that language is going to be pretty weir for that person

    • @coral3831
      @coral3831 2 года назад +1

      Some advice from another non-native English speaker, wait before outputting, keep listening and getting input. I noticed quite a lot of small mistakes in your comment which definitely will be fixed with more input and by watching more RUclips/ English content.

    • @Endershock1678
      @Endershock1678 2 года назад

      I think the whole 10 years old thing is a load of crap. I know people that speak foreign languages as well as natives, and they started well into their teens or even adults. My belief is that when you become fully fluent in your first language, it locks your brain into the patterns of that language, which makes it harder or nearly impossible to settle into patterns of other languages naturally, but it's not impossible so much as it requires you to put yourself in a situation where it becomes your main language. The other reason I feel is because you have more shame, which makes speaking practice harder.
      That theory doesn't really make sense to me. Language isn't a still statue, it's a moving target. It's changing all the time, so the English we speak now is completely different than 10 years ago. Japanese is super like that, half the words teens use nowadays weren't even spoken ten years ago, especially loan words, so it's not rare for someone who learned Japanese to speak it better than the elderly population.

    About the passing out thing for Jackson, I have a condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome or POTS for short. Basically my heart struggles to keep up with the rest of my body, sitting up can result in severe dizziness as well as exercise. High temperatures can also trigger a POTS flare up. My circulation is very bad because of this so I am affected by cold weather more than the average person.
    It could be something to check for. There is a test for it called a tilt table test where you lie on a table, get strapped in and the table will tilt and change positions every couple of minutes (I was very much on the edge of being sick and passing out). Not sure whether it is a possibility since I live in the UK, so free health care. Not sure whether it's a thing or the cost of it.

      That actually isn't super effective (at least in language theory, but hey, brains work different). They say that the most effective way to learn a language is to have the audio and captions be in that language, and have anything that can guide you to what it means turned off, so you have to actively look up what it says because if your brain can find a way to not learn it, it will.

    A tip I have for Poppt for learning Mandarin is to learn it through the characters and not the Pin Ying (which are English letters that are the pronunciation of word) because then you can recognize which words are which by looking at them because through my experience learning mandarin and Cantonese (which is much harder) the characters are way more important
