I ran a gen 4 race at Michigan. 60 laps I think. Don't remember. Anyway, qualified 3rd took the lead on lap 3. Had a caution at like lap 10. Restarted green for another 10 or so laps then another caution. I had no damage. 0x but I noticed under caution oil pressure dropped to 20psi when pacing at 4000rpm. Though for sure engine was hurt. Kept running. Led 50 some laps and won the race. I had a special low drag oil pump or something
Something I personally didn’t know after many many bad races taking my SR from 4.3 down to 1.3 is when you pass the 1 point mark (1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4) you get a massive increase or decrease depending one which way you go. That definitely saved me a lot and made me push really really hard to get some SR if I’m at the bottom so I don’t drop significantly or if I’m in the X.9’s to just get a clean race because I know I’ll be jumping way up.
I save fuel every chance I get, even if fuel distance isn't an issue in the race. It has helped me many times and I've become quite good at it...tire saving, on the other hand...
Nice job! I would add though, that not all cars benefit from just clutching. I know your channel focuses mainly on ovals but I believe a lot of the road cars, primarily GT style and the LMDs do not. I believe iRacing removed that or, better said, made it match irl with regard to clutching and fuel saving. Always enjoy your analysis of these subjects! 👍
I always pace in 4th gear until coming out of turn 4. Not really necessary to save fuel in the shorter sprint races, but I do it anyways for whatever reason 😂
Another tip i have for saving fuel is shut your car off and have a friend push you around the track only do this if you don't care about saftey rating and not getting protested 😂
the reason you'd be clutching in while the engine is off is that the car is effectively in neutral while clutched in. the gearbox and engine are disconnected. while the engine and gearbox are connected, the car will engine brake, which means it effectively produces negative torque which is pushed to the drive wheels, even if the engine is switched off. clutching in removes this engine braking effect from the car which in turn means you can roll for longer before you have to accelerate again. Related to this, engine braking torque is multiplied by the gear ratio the same way that acceleration torque is, meaning you lose *MORE* speed the lower your gear is when you engine brake which in the fuel saver scenarios you tested is less efficient.
Ive been doing the 4th gear and shutting the engine off for some time i did notice if you just shut the ignition off with out the clutch its sounds like it still idles until you push in the clutch
Great video, only thing I would recommend is doing more than one lap for a test. You might accidentally do something different or the fuel usage could be slightly inconsistent do you you not being perfect. One method might be slightly better based on your one lap test but if you did 5 laps for each instead, it might be slightly worst on average. Just doing 5 laps would probably eliminate any even slight anomaly’s especially when it’s close
The amount of fuel you can burn off in a caution is usually pretty negligible for handling sake, but I do sometimes burn if I want to be tighter for a GWC
Sorry, Oval noob question, but is it actually allowed to go on the apron in the corners while pacing? Wouldn't this be considered driving on an illegal surface to gain an advantage (tyre saving)?
@@DoctorDNF It's fine to go down there but any contact initiated due to a car being below the line at some point is protestable . Kinda go at your own risk
@@DJYeeJay Interesting 🤔 I know that its allowed on the straights, but I thought, you had to rejoin before every corner. I know thats road and not oval, but wasnt the hole Daytona 24h Williams ESports controversy about that exact problem? They used the apron during qualy which was not allowed. Do these rules differ in oval racing?
Sorry to bother you with that many questions, but I thought, what better place to ask this if not under an iRacing Mythbusting video xD Maybe usage of the apron could be a topic for a future episode ^^
Thanks for making this video! You answered most of the myths I was wondering about, but never took the time to test. One more myth I can think of is that swerving under pace laps does nothing to your tires. Is this true?
Clutching then shutting engine off should save more than just killing the ignition on carburetor cars. Gen 4 have carburetors. If the engine is turning its pulling fuel through carb. At least until the bowls go dry. But who knows if the game is that accurate
Weaving like an idiot on the pace lap and constantly speeding up to slam on your brakes doesn't give you anymore benefit than just dragging your brakes. If anything it hurts your tires. I need this myth tested.
That expected finishing position is bullshit. Of course all 1650 drivers are expected to finish above a 1450 driver. But iracing thinks the 1450 is going to finish 13th? Now at least I know why IR doesn't make sense. It's inherently broken because ELO is designed for zero sum games.
Pro tip: If you bash your car into the wall while pacing and give it engine damage, it will idle at a lower rpm and you can save even more fuel 🧠
You also use no fuel if you are stopped in your pit stall repairing 1:34.48 of required repairs

This is the fuel saving information I needed confirmed for my gen 4 races. Very professional
F you’ll get em next time 🤣
I'd love to see some brake dragging/tire warming myths during caution/pace laps explored.
That last minute or so needs to be pinned to the top of r/iRacing, it would get rid of 10 posts a day asking why did I lose IR. Good Stuff.
3:10 Got it. I will be running the apron to save tires from now on. 👍👍
LOVE this type of video, this is the type of thing I spend too much time thinking about while iPacing, so thank you for doing some tests for us!
the iRating Gain/loss can also be seen in the RaceLabs overlay of relative positions while on race, which makes it way easier and more handy :)

If fuel distance isn't an issue doesn't saving fuel then hurt you due to increasing the weight of your vehicle (esp with a live load)?
I've always paced in high gear. Lower revs = less fuel usage
i heard that driving around ovals clockwise is faster and ive been doin that recently
10 years in and I never knew this. GREAT watch.

I’m wondering if SR is still calculated with corners per incident for both road and oval, and if it has changed how it it calculated now?
On the road side Dave cam did a similar research about fuel saving under green!
6:10 "Now why is that?" I'm gonna go with "Because he wasn't out there clubbing bby seals..."

Myth: Track Usage in Iracing can make your pace slower as the track becomes more slippery. Contradictory to most racing games where you get faster.
Keep up the amazing work!

I like this idea 👀 hahahaha
As always, thanks for the tips I always wanted to know! Brake bias for a 4th place at Dover tonight C Class Trucks. What a difference.

well duh, if you dont push the clutch in the engine is still connected to the tires and is turning over... thus sounding like sit.

Ive heard 4th gear + clutch + turn off + hold throttle wide open aswell.
excellent info!
One question here: What is TT rating? Does doing Time Trials matters?
So I guess it’s safe to say you can burn off fuel during caution or dose that even matter compared to say more spoiler angle in the air with less fuel
The amount of fuel you can burn off in a caution is usually pretty negligible for handling sake, but I do sometimes burn if I want to be tighter for a GWC
Now THIS is podracing

Nah it's fine as long as you arent hitting people coming off of pit road or something

Started 9th
Finished 9th
Lost IR
Thanks as always
Your expected finishing position is not based on the qualifying result...
Warming up tires before green flag…Does it actually work?
Dang, I really coulda used this for my college race last night 😂
I'd like to find out if sitting on the grid cools your tyres while you wait, and if waiting for the end of the countdown is a better strat
Good idea

How are you supposed to know the expected finishing position before the race
You're not without a program like racelabs or filling out the spreadsheet, but this gives you a better guestimate
See if Joining the server after qualify is actually and advantage or not..
Best discord in the game
So if I just turn off the car without clutching I should get the same as clutching?
You would think I'm hearing conflicting things though. Clutch + off is best bet
Weaving like an idiot on the pace lap and constantly speeding up to slam on your brakes doesn't give you anymore benefit than just dragging your brakes. If anything it hurts your tires. I need this myth tested.
Sometimes at a place like martinsville I will speed up and then hit the brake hard to double check my brake pedal feels right
Of course you want to clutch if you turn the engine off. Engine braking.
