Yeah me too! Isn't it amazing that the more that the creatures blood is worth . The more resilient the species are. Pretty good measure of what we feel is important in nature. If you're ugly and make a horrible pet you really don't want to have any qualities that can be used by humans
Sadly some people start developing that kind of behavior. The same goes to slaughterhouses or fur farms. Just watch Earthlings documentary and see how crazy humans get.
it would, but greedy people obviously don't care, or else we wouldn't kill so many species of animals daily, and by kill, i mean the entire human race would be extinct in 17 days if we killed each other as fast as we killed other animals
I ashame to my other fellow humans that are not fair to other animals because they also live, they have life, they deserved peace and respect and humans dont deserved it.
If the horseshoe crabs are as precious as this video makes it seem to be, we should be ensuring their survival for long term gain rather than greedy short term gain. Sure maybe having more blood will save more lives today, but it will save no lives tomorrow or any day after when they’re extinct.
Yah, and why did the medical tester have a maniacal smile (evil characterization) while they were injecting the bunnies, but not the same characterization for the ones using horseshoe crabs...Also, bunnies are not on the vulnerable list but the horseshoe crabs are. Ultimately, if the synthesize the clotting agent, then neither bunnies nor horseshoe crabs should need to be used. Not to mention that they characterized it as "scientists" injecting the bunnies, but that's not science (the science is already worked out, that is medical testing as much as the horseshoe crab blood harvesting. They're just trying to make it sound like scientists are the evil bad guys, but they are the ones trying to come up with the synthetic alternative.
It's fine to kill either. Animals have zero value except as they serve people --as pets, food or members of an ecosystem we can exploit. Just a guess, but I bet they used bunnies because they're famously fertile (cheap), but more complex and better than mice at reacting to infections that would also harm people. Crab blood seems to be a better way to detect bad stuff. The problem with the way we exploit them is that it kills too many of them so we may run out. I would add what Donald Rumsfeld so perceptively called the "unknown unknowns." Horseshoe crabs may help the ecosystem in ways we don't know about or hadn't even thought to ask about. What was curious to me was they implied catching 600,000 horseshoe crabs annually hurt the horseshoe population. Globally, people probably chow down on 600,000 crabs a day. Consumption is spread over Blue, Dungeness, Snow and KIng Crabs but still, that consumption is managed to where it's sustainable or close to sustainable.
Jeff Zaun But besides being humane, if we use to much resources and if we don’t try to preserve animals, they will go extinct, resulting in humans to go extinct.
Is anyone else deeply disturbed that blood is being harvested from living things like some sort of horror movie? Reminds me of a scene from Blade II where the vampires had people in comas in plastic bags as part of a "blood farming" operation.
They are doing too much, the beach used to be covered in these and now there are almost none! And they have such sweet personalities, it's sad they have been almost wiped out in like 15 years.
They don't. They are a living fossil and are older than the dinosaurs, their brains can only process "YEEET food", "Sexxxxyyyy horseshoe crab" (during mating season), and "F*** there is a predator". But if you are talking physically, then, yes. Most don't survive in the wild after their blood is taken.
Solution: if you’re going to kill the crab anyway, catch a set amount and drain all the blood. It’s better to have a full pre approved set than a half approved
An answer to all of those who suggest that we farm horseshoe crabs, the answer is that because we actually don't know that much about the animal and what conditions it needs to survive! When the crabs come to beach the female lays her eggs, and after they hatch they won't return to the beach for another 10 years. Currently scientists have no idea where they even go for that entire span of time!
This is crazy.. I live in an area where we are surrounded by the ocean almost like a little peninsula.. I remember there were crazy amounts of horseshoe crabs all over the beaches and water like no joke is see 50 of them a day if not more and now that I just watched this it made me realize I haven't really seen any lately.. This must be the reason why.. And it sort of makes me sad.. Their not pretty to look at but they are life and all life deserves to be treated with respect.. I hate being a human sometimes :/
Bruh. Being a human is not a problem at all, It's the behavior and bad habits that took over their minds and thoughts. Making humans looks bad while there are still some of us humans that are innocent
My answer might come a bit late. But nowadays scientists already have found a solution to this. They synthesize the proteins in human blood who react to the toxins of bacteria. So there is no need to bleed the crabs anymore and this method of testing is more specific since crabs blood and human blood might react differently to various bacteria.
Actually in Malaysia there’s certain part especially in a village that people do breed them..they breed them for their eggs(basically just to eat em)(don’t tell me why). I’ve been to the farm btw
Anyone else think of that spongebob episode where mrkrabs tells spongebob to get the jellyfish to make jelly crabbypatties and he has them all hooked up in some factory he powers with his bike?... well the beginning of this RUclips video reminds me of that episode of spongebob
I wonder that too. This is the most reasonable argument to this situation. Not like the other cucks who go like "why do they kill crabs to save rabits". Everytime i read those comments i wanna die.
00:41 That scientist lady was holding that syringe like a psycho, and then going full blown crazy on those rabbits all in a row like that. Sheesh that’s pretty horrific imo.
Simple solution: Don't take 30%, take %20 and catch more crabs. Plus you can keep them in an appropriate contained habitat for 3 weeks to ensure they get back to full health
Better, take 10% and catch more crabs, even better: take 5% and catch even more crabs... See what I'm getting at... The companies would do anything to maximise profits 30% is probably the legal limit otherwise they would just take 100% and be done with it.
@@moneymule8209 They just don't want to spend money on fishing expenses. It's really cruel because considering the money they get for these experiments, it would be very cheap.
More practical simple solution: 45-55% die anyway so take 30% as many crabs but take 100% of their blood. The video didn't outline why the 30% in the blood letting process die, and in fact implied they don't know. Just as many may die from a 20% bleeding as a 30%. This quantity will get essentially the same amount of blood with the added bonus of not killing an extra 15-25% returned to the wild, just the same amount as currently. Further experimentation can be done on the side to find more efficient methods but this is the greatest gain for the least sacrifice with the information contained in this video.
@@tekoppentekoppen761 if animals got a brain and started farming us for deadly amounts of blood, wouldn't you want our price to go down, it would save many human lives, perhaps even yours, after all, right
03:06 “and the lives of countless rabbits” It’s sickening that rabbits are seen as more animal just because their cute. Aren’t humans are smart enough see past the cuteness factor and look at environmental impact or the importance of the species.
I'm pretty sure scientists don't cate about the rabbits, they just bleed the crabs because its a faster method than testing with countless rabbits. If the most economical method is killing rabbits then they would do it.

@CONNOR LUETKENHAUS everything has a purpose so nothing is lower in any scale of life other than how smart is animal is but mot humans are biased so i see why you think that
@@bencebob8055 so you'd prefer is millions of humans died from preventable infections? As opposed to a couple of thousand crabs? A problem we could probably solve by farming or more careful regulations?
1/3 of the blood taken causes 1/3 to die ...and 2/3 to suffer immensely. I hear a lot of people saying that we should instead drain a smaller amount of blood. ...but that requires MORE crabs, and considering that 1/3 is literally at death's door, I'd rather have fewer of them suffer. I know most will disagree, but I think it would be better if we simply drained 100% of the blood from a third of the crabs. Same amount of death one third the suffering. Arguably less since the 1/3 would die faster.
It isn't ok to kill rabbits, but rabbits repopulate easily. As well as breeds such as lab rabbits. In fact, in most places they populate, they're invasive. They're the reason some farmers starve during the winter.
@@HairyBalls83 there was a shit ton of crabs at one point to. lol the point is they seam surprised that there's less of them. if they where killing rabbits over and over again if they didn't figure out this crab deal. then there would be less rabbits. it is what it is either way.
Well you can't breed more of them like you can rabbits since very little is know about them like scientists don't even know where they go after they leave the beaches they gather to breed at
wouldnt it just be better to just catch a third of whats being caught at the moment and just extract 100% ? that would mean more blood and more crabs that survive. of course the third that would get caught would be dead for sure
John Alean but 1 third don't survive trough the bleeding process anyway. And the ones who do, still die within the first days of release, very few survive the first 2 weeks after release. So catching just 1 third and bleeding them 100% actually makes sense coz it guarantees the survival of the other 2 thirds. At the current situation, 1 third dies anyway, while a big chunk of the other 2 thirds die shortly ofter release. It's not economical.
Well the current behaviour creates a huge selective pressure thatll change the crabs to survivw the bleeding without problems. Because those are the only ones that survive. Only thing to do is to make sure we dont extinct them
Alexander Calderon I agree with you. Humans are actually invasive species and heavily destroying Earth. Don't listen to those previous low-IQ repliers.
If they took less than 30% of their blood many more would survive, but then again, that would be to compassionate of a human gesture. Always taking more than what nature can bear. So sad.
Maybe I'm not completely understanding the schematics or the number of crabs, but wouldn't it just make sense to either breed or keep them for the time they're vulnerable?
Richard Peters, No, no. It's just you don't yet understand that very little human activity makes sense in a human society organized through the current "economic" system, when thinking about it from a bigger picture perspective/ecological sustainability perspective/outside the box thought process...
Their reproductive pattern makes it very difficult to breed them. And besides, their metabolism, like a lot of marine arthropods, is pretty slow. This means that they grow very slowly and take an extremely long time before becoming fertile or becoming suitable for blood harvesting. This gives them a lifespan of 40 years, a very high lifespan when it comes to vertebrates, but also makes them inviable for breeding.
They’re such interesting and weird creatures. I never understood their importance in the science community, but I knew it must have been important as I was growing up. My dad was a medical biologist for Siemens and he had a gold horseshoe crab pin he wore every day on his tie 😊
@@asp6449 Also have to note that laying a large number of eggs doesn't mean all of them survive. Only animals whose preliminary stages aren't much resistant to the environment release a large number of eggs.

The symptoms afflicting the crabs are very similar to those in humans who donate blood, and basically the post-effects you'd expect from 30% total blood loss. Since blood loss is a pretty well-studied topic in the academic circles, a conclusion is manifested: they know what should be done; they just don't _care_

Did i miss why it’s ok to kill crabs and not bunnies? Ok.
Because of efficiency. People won't care about morals or ethics. Is all about 💰
Because rabbits > crabs 🤦🏻♂️ duh

An answer to all of those who suggest that we farm horseshoe crabs, the answer is that because we actually don't know that much about the animal and what conditions it needs to survive! When the crabs come to beach the female lays her eggs, and after they hatch they won't return to the beach for another 10 years.

@@aurum_7201 they should take 40% and give them a shelter
@@Yafama that would kill a large portion of the crabs
More practical simple solution: 45-55% die anyway so take 30% as many crabs but take 100% of their blood. The video didn't outline why the 30% in the blood letting process die, and in fact implied they don't know. Just as many may die from a 20% bleeding as a 30%. This quantity will get essentially the same amount of blood with the added bonus of not killing an extra 15-25% returned to the wild, just the same amount as currently.
Further experimentation can be done on the side to find more efficient methods but this is the greatest gain for the least sacrifice with the information contained in this video.

@@chisel4164 why can't they keep some and breed more before releasing them?
wouldnt it just be better to just catch a third of whats being caught at the moment and just extract 100% ? that would mean more blood and more crabs that survive.
of course the third that would get caught would be dead for sure
Melvin Fuchs Their chances of survival and regenerating that blood would be greater; Only for them to take it again.

I read it's because we don't know too much about the crabs themselves. they only come to shore to spawn every 10? years. don't quote me on this though

Let's go back to bunnies. No literally there are rats
R S yes but you are also critically endangering that species as well.
I hope another solution is discovered & these invertebrates stop enduring this pain 🙏🏽
Imagine living for hundreds of millions of years, surviving numerous extinctions that took all of your closest relatives yet continuing to do your job in aquatic ecosystem
Then you go extinct because of some monkeys
here come the petitions to save endangered horseshoe crabs after we've nearly killed them all. 👍🏼
#BringBackTheDodoBird
Isn’t that the truth? Similar to Pharmaceutical companies creating a drug with side effects and another drug to combat those side effects and so on and so forth. Vicious cycle of money churning.
There are some progress though. Researching a little bit and the situation is different.
Another thing humans are messing up
A person people like him usually don’t believe in vaccines.
Ever stepped on one you’ll change your mins
amber BLLUE yea but I’d rather have vaccines than crabs. This guy made a stupid comment that essentially equates to “humans are bad” because we use other animals to our benefit. How dare humans think about about improving our living standards at the expense of an animal that has 0 self awareness. Boohoo. We aren’t just blindly genociding the crabs. All this guy or anyone else is doing is virtue signaling.
amber BLLUE and telling me to think outside the box. You’re not my mother and you didn’t come up with a solution so don’t condescend to me like you’re some all knowing entity.
amber BLLUE again what’s your solution? I’m assuming you don’t have one. Him saying humans are doing something bad is worthless and does nothing others have made the comment already. Also how should the organizations be held responsible? They rely on the crab for business id imagine they are putting money time and effort into researching a solution. You know why I imagine this? Because businesses will always act i their best interest if you think they aren’t doing anything you are clueless. Also go look up the researcher mentioned in this video and see who is sponsoring and finding him.
Watch this and go back to the homepage next video I see “Why you want horseshoe crab blood”
It already showed up in my Amazon feed.
I thought the title was “Why Horshoe Crab Blood Is So Explosive”
Creeper? Aw man!
