    SOLUTION: Determine a more moderate amount of blood to take per treatment (like 20-25% of their blood... vs 30%). Then require those companies draining them of their blood, to keep the crabs in a "rehabilitation-farm" for 15 days, before returning them to the sea. This should significantly reduce their mortality rate.
    In addition, they should be required to farm a % of their eggs each year, gestate the eggs and bring the babies to adolescence, then return them to the wild. This would increase the overall population over time. The cost for these farms would be absorbed by the LAL industry, and would result in higher LAL prices and lower profits, but the benefits would be a sustainable resource.

    • @salicatus
      @salicatus 6 лет назад +260

  • @reaganb6013
    @reaganb6013 5 лет назад +5226

    1. Breed them, so you don't have to take them from the wild and endanger them
    2. Take less blood, so the chance of survival is higher
    3. Keep them in captivity for two weeks to recover before releasing them
    Also, why do they have a problem with killing rabbits but not crabs? Am I missing something here?

      Anant Adhikari,
      Surely you don't understand how capitalism works... It doesn't care about life (including human), it doesn't care about ecological sustainability (including avoidance of extinction of species). It only cares about monetary profits, and that's why it must go away, before it causes more deaths and human (and animal) suffering.
      *I'll update my original comment with this:* The main problem is us, *collectively,* "thinking" that capitalism, an "economic" system based on competition/selfish gain ("competition is the driver of progress"), economic inequality/stratification, monetary profits above all, and consumerism/ecologically unsustainable use of the Earth's natural resources - is what allows this very dynamic that you pointed out.
      When in reality, if we educated ourselves, we would've understood that we should be basing our socio-economic system on the scientific method, meaning on full collaboration and sharing of ideas/innovations, economic equality, open source everything, human need and health above all, and ecologically sustainable use of Earth's natural resources - there would've been no one "with more power" (economic power/wealth, that is). For the benefit of all us and of everyone of us.
      The ultimate problem is our collective level of consciousness, about our current "economic" system, about what truly makes a healthy (physically and mentally), prosperous human society.
      More on this from such materials as:
      Two documentaries Zeitgeist Moving Forward and Zeitgeist Addendum, the Culture In Decline series, the presentations/analyses "Where are we now?", "Where are we going?", "Social pathology" by Peter Joseph (the documentaries I mentioned, the series, and all of his presentations/analyses, really, all of them have great value, all available on RUclips and/or on TZM's official RUclips channel, in the playlists section), presentations by James Phillips, Ben McLeish, Jason Lord (The Zeitgeist Movement activists, so search their names in conjunction with words "TZM" and/or "ZDay")), the concept of Open Source Everything, economic inequality and how it's detrimental for a human society (it hinders innovation/progress, makes us physically and mentally more ill), Natural Law Resource-Based Economy, The Zeitgeist Movement, The Venus Project, Jacque Fresco, also materials on Natural Law are worth to soak in too.
      How money turned from being useful to humans thousands of years ago to being actually being harmful for humans in modern age:
      "ZDay 2012 - Vancouver - Peter Joseph - 'Origins and Adaptations' Part 1" (channel: TZMOfficialChannel)(and pet 2 and 3)

      (All freely available on RUclips, sorry didn't give direct links - otherwise my comment would've been "ghost banned")
      Finally - good luck to all of us.

      Yah, and why did the medical tester have a maniacal smile (evil characterization) while they were injecting the bunnies, but not the same characterization for the ones using horseshoe crabs...Also, bunnies are not on the vulnerable list but the horseshoe crabs are. Ultimately, if the synthesize the clotting agent, then neither bunnies nor horseshoe crabs should need to be used. Not to mention that they characterized it as "scientists" injecting the bunnies, but that's not science (the science is already worked out, that is medical testing as much as the horseshoe crab blood harvesting. They're just trying to make it sound like scientists are the evil bad guys, but they are the ones trying to come up with the synthetic alternative.

    • @jeffzaun1841
      @jeffzaun1841 6 лет назад +22

      It's fine to kill either. Animals have zero value except as they serve people --as pets, food or members of an ecosystem we can exploit.
      Just a guess, but I bet they used bunnies because they're famously fertile (cheap), but more complex and better than mice at reacting to infections that would also harm people. Crab blood seems to be a better way to detect bad stuff. The problem with the way we exploit them is that it kills too many of them so we may run out.
      I would add what Donald Rumsfeld so perceptively called the "unknown unknowns." Horseshoe crabs may help the ecosystem in ways we don't know about or hadn't even thought to ask about.
      What was curious to me was they implied catching 600,000 horseshoe crabs annually hurt the horseshoe population. Globally, people probably chow down on 600,000 crabs a day. Consumption is spread over Blue, Dungeness, Snow and KIng Crabs but still, that consumption is managed to where it's sustainable or close to sustainable.

    An answer to all of those who suggest that we farm horseshoe crabs, the answer is that because we actually don't know that much about the animal and what conditions it needs to survive! When the crabs come to beach the female lays her eggs, and after they hatch they won't return to the beach for another 10 years. Currently scientists have no idea where they even go for that entire span of time!

So there is no need to bleed the crabs anymore and this method of testing is more specific since crabs blood and human blood might react differently to various bacteria.

      More practical simple solution: 45-55% die anyway so take 30% as many crabs but take 100% of their blood. The video didn't outline why the 30% in the blood letting process die, and in fact implied they don't know. Just as many may die from a 20% bleeding as a 30%. This quantity will get essentially the same amount of blood with the added bonus of not killing an extra 15-25% returned to the wild, just the same amount as currently.
      Further experimentation can be done on the side to find more efficient methods but this is the greatest gain for the least sacrifice with the information contained in this video.

    1/3 of the blood taken causes 1/3 to die ...and 2/3 to suffer immensely. I hear a lot of people saying that we should instead drain a smaller amount of blood.
    ...but that requires MORE crabs, and considering that 1/3 is literally at death's door, I'd rather have fewer of them suffer.
    I know most will disagree, but I think it would be better if we simply drained 100% of the blood from a third of the crabs.
    Same amount of death one third the suffering. Arguably less since the 1/3 would die faster.

      John Alean but 1 third don't survive trough the bleeding process anyway. And the ones who do, still die within the first days of release, very few survive the first 2 weeks after release. So catching just 1 third and bleeding them 100% actually makes sense coz it guarantees the survival of the other 2 thirds. At the current situation, 1 third dies anyway, while a big chunk of the other 2 thirds die shortly ofter release. It's not economical.

      Their reproductive pattern makes it very difficult to breed them. And besides, their metabolism, like a lot of marine arthropods, is pretty slow. This means that they grow very slowly and take an extremely long time before becoming fertile or becoming suitable for blood harvesting. This gives them a lifespan of 40 years, a very high lifespan when it comes to vertebrates, but also makes them inviable for breeding.

      amber BLLUE and telling me to think outside the box. You’re not my mother and you didn’t come up with a solution so don’t condescend to me like you’re some all knowing entity.

      amber BLLUE again what’s your solution? I’m assuming you don’t have one. Him saying humans are doing something bad is worthless and does nothing others have made the comment already. Also how should the organizations be held responsible? They rely on the crab for business id imagine they are putting money time and effort into researching a solution. You know why I imagine this? Because businesses will always act i their best interest if you think they aren’t doing anything you are clueless. Also go look up the researcher mentioned in this video and see who is sponsoring and finding him.
