- Correspondent Conor Knighton visits New Jersey beaches along the Delaware Bay to learn about horseshoe crabs - mysterious creatures that predate dinosaurs - whose very blood has proved vital to keeping humans healthy by helping detect bacterial endotoxins. He talks with environmentalists about the decline in the horseshoe crab population, and with researchers who are pushing the pharmaceutical industry to switch its use of horseshoe crab blood with a synthetic alternative used in medical testing.

Humans must be kinder to almost everything.
I'm glad to know that there is a human representing their best interests and not letting them be used and abused. They live on this earth too, when are humans getting this into their head. We are in 2024 and still testing on living beings that have no voice.

I remember as a young child when I would go to the beach, I would see horseshoe crabs along the shore. I was always afraid of them (especially that long tail I was afraid that it would stick me). I always tried to stay away from them because they scared me to death. I’m glad that I saw this story because as an adult, I’m still afraid of horseshoe crabs. But I feel a little better now that I understand them a little bit more. 🦀🦀🦀🦀

I remember the horseshoe crabs when I went to the Jersey shore as a child. I didn’t realize how valuable they are, just thought how funny they look.
My mother called them "German helmets" for their resemblance to the "pickelhaub" (spiked) helmets worn by the Kaiser's soldiers.

Human beings are notorious opportunists who will consume every natural resource available, regardless of the damage done to an ecosystem. It is necessary to protect the horseshoe crabs from the ignorant practices that have threatened their continued existence. This is the sad state of the world, folks.

I miss seeing them, grew up on Staten Island, NY, they were all over our eastern beaches.
The funny thing about people saying we need to leave them alone is those same people would be complaining about toxins in their medicine and vaccines; people also will complain about something being harvested from nature but then be in an uproar over something being made synthetically; which is it? Save the animals and plants by not using them or save them by using synthetically made products? Nobody knows the answer
I was born in Miami and lived there for 56 years. I have been a diver all of my life. Horseshoe crabs were prolific in Florida from the time I started diving in the 1970s. Now they are gone. Absolutely horrifying as the marine environment in Florida is absolutely devastated.
I've grown up around horseshoe crabs and I've always thought they were leftovers from the dinosaurs! They're awesome creatures, even if they do stink like hell!!

Now Eli Lilly has turned into the epitome of corporate greed selling one vial of insulin for $350. They were freely given the knowledge and techniques of extracting insulin by scientists.
I first saw a horseshoe crab when I lived in Savannah GA. They are fascinating but I can't help thinking of the facehuggers from alien 👽

When i was a kid,i caught 2 mating on my fishing line out in my dads boat. Scared the heck out of me. Dad tried to shake them off,but they took the whole tack,line and sinker! Never forget that day so long ago! That's what living at the Jersey shore will get you! PEACE!

If there’s a monetary profit to be made, humans take advantage, regardless. I am thankful there are some of my species who do consider and try to negate any negative consequences.
If you donate some of your blood you will feel dizzy, lightheaded, chilly, weak, and maybe throw up afterwards (I eat a light meal 3 or 4 hours before donating blood). You may have to drink juice or Gatorade and rest for at least 30 minutes just to recover. Now think of what these horseshoe crabs experience after blood was taken from them.

In 6th or 7th grade we went to jamaica bay nyc. As i was wakling on sand, i saw a horseshoe crab and took a photo. That was my first time and only time seeing one.i knew not to touch crab.
Growing up near Jamaica Bay, there were so many horseshoe crabs a school kid in the 1980’s. They survived several ELE ’s, for 500 million years, but western medicine and greed has made them an endangered species in less than 40 years.

These companies should be ashamed of themselves, first rabbits, now horseshoe crabs. There has got to be a better way if our ecosystem depends on it. Sad. At least Eli Lilly is moving in the right direction. But it's 2024, how long will it take to get to 90%? Why not have a press conference and educate the public. And why not ban using horseshoe crabs as bait? If our ecosystem depends on it, we need to sacrifice our current gain for a sustainable future.

Horseshoe Crabs first appeared on the scene over 400 million years ago, on March 8th. They were first seen in New Jersey, Perth Amboy, I believe it was, and were noted for their bright, blue blood. Legend has it that the first governor of New Jersey, Uug, used them for softball practice. You're welcome. 😮😅😮😅

Well, this is a pretty sad story about the horseshoe crab. How much of the blood are they bleeding from the animal? Does anybody know that? If they’re dying after they’re released, can you imagine the stress that they’re under to be bled like that?
they should have to breed their own horseshoes r and there needs to be strict oversight since you can’t trust a drug company as far as you can throw them.
