    Hal’s edits are some of the most impressive, invisible edits available. I’m actually doing an edit of 9 using Ascendant as a base (with his permission of course). If you like the story present in TROS, but think the issue is execution, Ascendant is definitely for you.

    There's another Rise of Skywalker edit by an editor named Spence called The Final Order which takes many of HAL's edits and adds more. It's called The Final Order and it manages to remove all references to 'Rey Palpatine', making her a nobody again and giving her more agency. For instance, instead of hearing all the Jedi voices at the end, she thinks back to all the good times she had with her friends and that gives her the strength to keep going.
    It also kills of Leia early (during Rey's Jedi training to be precise), removing all the weird superimposed scenes that never felt right. It actually flows pretty well.
    It's still the Rise of Skywalker, which I feel is a fundamentally broken movie, but it at least takes out its worst aspect. Seek it out if you can.

    • @order42show
      @order42show  11 месяцев назад +2

    Has anyone done a total fan edit combining all three movies into one?
    Had the idea of TFA starting with Palatine/Sideous being introduced in the crawl intro. That way it doesn't come off lame. Snoke would be equivalent to Count Doku. Using Kylo and the FirstOrder usher in the Final Order.
    Something like that.

    I really like the alternate scene of Phasma's death in TLJ. It felt more of a satisfying sendoff to Finn and Phasma's rivalry than in the theatrical cut, particularly Boyega's delivery of "rebel scum" is so good. Effects incomplete, but it's Star Wars, you know someone will rise up to the challenge.

    • @order42show

    I saw TFA: Restructured and TROS Ascendant. I didn’t bother with TLJ: Legendary because I personally believe TLJ was perfect as it was. Matter of fact, I've watched extended editions of TLJ to get more TLJ action! The TFA: Restructured edit was good and a fine alternative, but I overall prefer the original TFA. As for TROS Ascendant, Hal 9000 actually tremendously improved the movie for me. A lot of supplementary material has since come out that explained some of the finer points of the story, like Rey's parents, Ochi and the dagger, so for me the original TROS's biggest faults lied with its pacing, bad jokes, and characterization. Hal 9000 fixed that and then some. The Force Ghost Jedis were awesome, and Force Ghost Ben Solo was just a huge cherry on top as someone who was a big fan of a Rey x Ben Solo romantic relationship. The emotional delivery of "Rey Skywalker ", the final shot being the Millennium Falcon taking off as Rey goes off on a new adventure with her friends... so much better. I hated the original TROS. I've actually re-watched TROS Ascendant today, and it was like my 6th re-watch since seeing it for the first time last year. So yeah. My 2 cents

    • @order42show
      @order42show  10 месяцев назад +1

      To be perfectly honest with you - I’d watched TFA and TLJ over and over because I was so excited to see what was coming in TRoS…but then it came out, and it kinda made me sad to watch them again. (I rewatched TRoS when I get the big bad set in 4K, and that may be the last time).
      I’m glad you enjoyed Hal9000 edits! There’s only so much you can do to “fix” those movies, so they’re about as good as they’ll ever be, in my eyes!

      The Maple Films version has always been the gold standard for me, but I also haven't watched them again since - I'd really have to watch them all again to know for sure, almost back to back, and even then, there are going to be scenes that you don't like that they left in or scenes you love that they took out - so even that would be highly subjective!

    I’m glad that hal9000 was able to improve these movies, but the sequel trilogy will just never be canon for me. I refuse to give up all of the great expanded universe stories we had before Disney cancelled them in exchange for a dissonant and poorly written trilogy of films which constantly retcon each-other and feel like they’re all fighting against themselves to take the characters and overall narrative in completely different (and often nonsensical) directions. At the end of the day, there’s only so much editing can do to improve what are fundamentally flawed movies, and the expanded universe will always be head-canon for me in the years set after RotJ.

    • @order42show
      @order42show  Год назад +2

      You’re right about the fact that you can only do so much. I never got too far into the EU, because the Zahn trilogy always just felt like fan fiction to me. Although, it has been years - it may actually work better for me these days.

    • @Dwapook

      I didn't get into the EU because I didn't want to get attached to it only to have it retconned, and that was my mentality before Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney.. I'm only actually going through all the old books and comics now for the first time because I don't have that anxiety that the next episode of Clone Wars or other George Lucas project will shatter them all.

    Great, I agree with you about just about everything. I really thought the best part of the sequels was the opening of Force Awakens, it introduced Kylo, Poe, Finn and Rey in really good ways. Everything else was sort of a disappointment. The Last Jedi’s cinematography was the most beautiful by far, agreed, probably my favorite too, but the story and death of Luke could have been handled so, so much better. Eliminating the villain and leaving a conflicted Kylo in charge of the First Order was a terrible choice.
    I would like to see a cut that combines all of the sequel movies, gets rid of Canto Bight, kills Poe in the crashed tie fighter on Jakku and Finn is killed in the forest on Star Killer Base, and still have Han and Leia die (their deaths actually contribute to the story ie Kylo’s redemption arc, unlike Luke’s death which served no purpose other than inflating RJ’s ego through his middle finger to the fanbase through his masturbatory subversion of expectations.) I would have it end with Rey killing Kylo and meeting Luke on the island and that would be the end of it all, leaving the story open to go in any direction afterward (new generation of Jedi, trained by Luke, etc.) Possibly have the whole thing skip Palpatine completely as it’s so stupid OR have the starting scroll explain that Snoke is in command of the empire as Palpatine is regenerating in a clone body … something instead of the random shit we got.

      Yeah, I mean…the ST didn’t destroy my love for Star Wars as a whole, but man, it’s definitely killed most of my enjoyment from talking about it. The fact is, even if TLJ has the most going for it, I know what comes after.
      The biggest problem with your admittedly better idea is that I just don’t know if, with the footage available, it could be done. I really like when editors are able to pull off some wacky “rewrites” of movies. It’d be interesting to see how far you could get with this idea.

      Well from what we know about the inital plans for Episode IX, Kylo wasn't supposed to be conflicted, this was supposed to be his full transition into the Main Antagonist, but Disney got scared and went back to JJ who basically just did a rehash of VI, damn shame because the leaked script of Big Bad Kylo was awesome.

    Bringing the emperor back did far less damage to the OT than TLJ did. If you don't like the emperor coming back, imagine how people feel about Luke being completely changed. Most of the retconning happened in TLJ. TRoS had to reconnect it to TFA.

    • @order42show
      @order42show  2 года назад +3

      Get what you’re saying, but - and believe me when I say that I know we’re probably not going to change each other’s minds here - but, it was TFA that made Luke disappear. TLJ had to explain how Luke couldn’t have felt all of the pain going on in TFA, and the only explanation that would’ve made sense was that Luke was cut off from the Force. And then…why? What would make him do that?
      The Emperor coming back was…what it was…
      But then again, the failure comes from not having a singular vision from the beginning. I like parts of all the movies, but a satisfactory conclusion to my favorite saga of movies ever? Nope.

    • @mbeacom21
      @mbeacom21 2 года назад +5

      @@order42show I agree about not having a singular vision. That's still very surprising to me and honestly why most of the problems occurred. By not requiring Rian Johnson to continue the story of TFA, it sent us on a disjointed path. Such that TRoS coming back to the original story feels like retconning.
      I don't agree that Luke needed to not feel all the pain. In fact, TLJ kind of contradicts that notion, since even when he DID feel the pain, he didn't return. The way TLJ wrote Luke was that he no longer really cared about his friends and somehow blamed the Jedi (when that very idea is meta based on watching the movies rather than living them. Luke's critique of the jedi sounds like comment on reddit), which was quite a departure from who he was in the OT. And the only justification for that was his mistake with Ben, which was also in complete contradiction to who he worked so hard to become over 3 movies. Juke was a mature jedi at the end of RotJ, one who risked everything to redeem his father. Then by the time TLJ happens, we have a contradictory character with an instinct to murder family rather than redeem it. Thus ignoring all the lessons he learned in the OT.
      I don't think Johnson was doing what he thought he had to do with the story, rather he was seeking to subvert expectations, if the fans thought A would happen, he would do B. He has said as much in interviews that as a viewer he wants to be surprised. But surprises that are surprises for surprise sake (the lightsaber yoink toss) are less powerful and just jarring and unpleasant. More than the weak subversive story telling though, I just had a hard time with cringe humor. A yo-mama joke as the opener shows a person who really doesn't understand star wars.

    • @order42show

      I get it - but humor is completely subjective. But I didn’t find the humor jarring at all. I didn’t exactly find it funny, but not out of character.

      I agree with both of you when it comes to bringing back The Emperor. I like the idea because it makes him the main antagonist for all 9 films (the sequences in his lair on Exegol are some of the best among the sequels) but the way it was shoe horned in with no set up feels forced and desperate. Even something like revealing the Emperor and Rey being his grand daughter happening in the second half of TLJ by Rey being drawn to Exegol through the Hal9000's chanting Sith concept to have the Emperor begin turning her to the dark would have been a vast improvement... then save Luke's death for TRoS after he brings both Rey and Ben back to the light. Boom! fixed it lol

  • @mstrainjr

    You say that you like the Last Jedi the best out of the sequel trilogy.
    The entire story arc involving Finn and Rose is useless to the overall story. You can remove their entire plot b and nothing changes. Poe attempts a mutiny, which fails and he is left looking like a dummy. Fin and Rose go off to look for this master code breaker, fail to find him, find another guy instead who betrays them, they escape, and end up right back with the Resistance for the third act.
    This is why I hold to the argument that Poe should have died in Force Awakens after crash landing on Jakku. His purpose should have been to get Finn's story going. There is no reason for him to pop up again later in the film. And had he not sent Finn on that useless mission, Finn may have gone off when Rose wasn't looking so he could find Rey. Or, he could have done something useful. And then the last film, the stuff with Poe could have been taken out and replaced with something else that made more sense, and no one would have missed it.

      There are many problems with the sequel trilogy, not just one movie. There are lots of issues that are inherent to the way the stories are told, so even with fan-edits, there’s only so much you can do.
      With regards to TLJ, I don’t have issues with what went down in each character arc - the execution, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Still, it’s the one movie of the three that attempts to change up some of the “tropes” that the previous trilogies did in a new way. It’s just a shame that TRoS attempted to undo a lot of what was set up and just left me with a bad taste in my mouth for the whole trilogy.

I think people hated it so much because of Luke, but like you said, there really isn't a much better explanation for why he was missing from TFA, why he didn't feel the pain of the New Republic getting decimated, and why he essentially cut himself off. Rian Johnson did the best with what he was given. It was easily the best made, best looking, and overall most enjoyable out of the sequel trilogy.

Especially because if you didn't like TLJ you REALLY didn't like it. It isn't like the prequels where the general disdain seems to be centered around them being too campy and goofy. Some people genuinely hate the movie and are very vocal about it. Personally, I thought it was great but never felt so strongly about it that I felt the need to sing it praises. I'm sure a lot of people are in that same boat. It kind of paints this picture that there is overwhelming negative reception to the film- when I don't really think that's the case. I think it's fair to say that everyone was a little dissapointed with the way Luke turned out- but there were so many other aspects of the movie that I absolutely loved. Mainly, it was the first Star Wars movie in a long time that felt original- like someone was actually trying to be creative. Frankly it was a breath of fresh air after The Force Awakens. I still remember driving 3 hours to an IMAX theater in snowstorm to go see that movie and I walked out thinking "wow they really just made A New Hope all over again". Chronologically, that would have been the 3rd death star in 4 movies. I was so pleasantly surprised after TLJ because I finally felt like we were going to actually going to go in a new direction.
