The people involved in this Ghost Army probably had the best job in the entire war, just sit around and be a theatre kid and then go to the local bars and get absolutely hammered.
When it came to being drafted into the military they essentially won because they get to come home with the prestige of actually having 'fought' in world war II and in many cases, even being deployed to Europe while knowing none of them had to actually see the horrors of war and the worst injury, any of them had would be accidentally hammering your thumb when assembling a wooden tank
It's also worth noting that traditionalists in the British military regarded tactics such as deception, subterfuge and small unit raids as an "ungentlemanly and dishonorable" way of conducting warfare. Most of human history makes a strong case to the contrary of that lofty opinion, however.
@@richbattaglia5350 Because in a lot of cases, making war was something of a sport, often done to prove a point, and done with the expectation that when you were done with it, you'd go back to business as usual with the other side. If you fought in a dishonorable way, it would make the peace process more difficult later on.
This is nice. I had actually forgotten this wasn't just a war news channel. Hate to say it, especially on a Simon channel. But Warfronts and Warographics should both exist, and be different channels.
0:43 might want to check the definition of "false flag" here, not sure it applies as it is friendly forces deceiving enemy, not friendly deceiving friendlies
While no active Army unit traces formal lineage from the 23rd, its legacy has inspired the contemporary Army. Today, both the psychological and Information Operations (IO) communities use the ghost patch as an informal identity as these disciplines specialize in influence Psychological Operations (PO) and deception activities (IO), which the 23rd pioneered.
1:20. "Nevertheless the landing was met with fierce resistance; Resistance that needed to be met with a robust response in order to avoid that the assault would not be driven back out of France as it happen at Dunkirk in 1940." This statement makes no sense in the context in which it is being used. Dunkirk was an evacuation of the BEF from France after German success in Case Yellow. Did your writers mistake the Dieppe Raid of 1942 with Dunkirk? Dieppe was an actual amphibious attack where "Aerial and naval support was insufficient to enable the ground forces to achieve their objectives. The tanks were trapped on the beach and the infantry was largely prevented from entering the town by obstacles and German fire. Both sides learnt important lessons regarding coastal assaults. The Allies learnt lessons that influenced the success of the D-Day landings. Artificial harbours were declared crucial, tanks were adapted specifically for beaches, a new integrated tactical air force strengthened ground support, and capturing a major port at the outset was no longer seen as a priority."
Hmm... The 'ghost army' was active before D-Day. They got started on Jan 20, 1944. They were, at least in theory, one of Patton's armies. Patton had been stripped of his command because he slapped someone who had shell shock (what we'd likely call PTSD today). Anyhow, they didn't get started after we landed in Europe. They got started well before it. They wanted to keep the Germans thinking the attack would come from further north.
Thanks for this. I recall that my grandfather worked as a skilled labourer for the Royal Canadian Engineers building decoys in England during the war. Not much else was shared although I know he was shot and bombed on… maybe there is more to his service record- how to find out?

At the 2:18 mark you refer to Rommel as a "Nazi general".
