- A British man who died after severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight has been named as Geoff Kitchen.
Captain Chris Hammond a retired pilot and member of the British Airlines Pilot Association discusses the impacts turbulence can have and how pilots are trained to react.

@@JessieB_ sorry but that is a bit insensitive really. It’s great that you’re not afraid to go when your time comes but many people live into their 80s, 90s I’ve even cared for people over 100 so it’s still a tragic loss in my opinion! Just my opinion though.

TRUTH !!! Always strap in - even if seat belts sign is off
Except on the ground when the engines aren't yet started, if the aircraft is fueling so you are on board early then leave the belts off. Even pilots will tell you this is good protocol.
Turbulence is terrifying.
Anybody that completely unbuckles during a flight other than going to the toilet is taking a similar risk as driving without a seat belt. Loosen but do not unbuckle, period.
Cabin crew don't have that option. They are working on board except for take off and landing.

I was 70 years old on Saturday in London/Kent and I last flew in 2001 and was so nervous, on arrival, at Tenerife, that I was searched at the Airport due to my suspicious demeanour. 23 years later, heaven only knows how edgy I would be. I only encountered turbulence once in 1973 while travelling to Rimini on The Adriatic Riviera and I flew around 20 times but counted every minute in the air apart from 1979 when I was quite relaxed on an 11-hour flight to Los Angeles.
Even worse for the ones afraid of plummeting to their deaths.
How would wearing a seatbelt stop someone having a heart attack?
It didn’t ‘drop’. It descended to get out of turbulence. 6000ft over around 4.5 minutes is not a drop.
4.5? I just read 3 minutes in one article. I did wonder about the news reporting it as having dropped 6000ft for 3 minutes... seemed a bit bizarre. So it dropped briefly from the turbulence and then the pilots immediately started descending to avoid it?

@@AD-kv9kj In the video, Hammond indicated that this would have been standard procedure after hitting turbulence. i.e. Either climb or descend 6k to get out of the layer of air causing the problem.
The fake news exaggerated the drop and then even brought up climate change as a factor which was quickly dismissed by the excellent pilot getting interviewed. The news reader aught to be ashamed of herself trying to push narratives when someone has passed away!
It dropped as well. That's why people had head injuries because if they weren't wearing seat belts their heads hit the ceiling when the aircraft hit an air pocket. It very much dropped and then it descended.

Play safe by fastening the seat belt on during the entire flight as far as practicable.
I hit my head on the overhead baggage holders one time when the plane just dropped mid-flight on a flight to brazil, the lights went on and off, i hope i dont experience that again.

I’ve been on a plane which dropped altitude suddenly - it’s very, very unpleasant - very sad to hear of a fatality - but it just goes to show that you should always keep your belt fastened.

What a horrific nightmare
Cebu Pacific from Manila to Bali has a strong ( not severe) turbulence on 16 March 2024 before getting to Bali, it was scary and it was 321.. small plane . Passengers were shouting, scary..I don't want it for my enemy even
I was waiting for it, 6.45 minutes in and the “climate change” malarkey cropped up and was quickly shut down by the pilot! It’s called weather and has been happening for millions of years! Very unfortunate for the passengers and crew, hopefully the injured will recover quickly.

So many comments about seat belts. Do we even know, for certain, that this poor chap didn’t have his seatbelt on? Personally I always have my seatbelt fastened when I am seated - but I’m not sure it would prevent a heart attack, though. RIP to the guy and condolences to his wife and family.

I’ve never heard of anything like this before, but I guess the sheer terror of the thing would induce a heart attack. So yes!, I can understand that very much ! Terrible!
I’ve taken that flight many times back in 1998-99 and I’d estimate on 50% of those flights we had that over the same airspace. We had to land a couple of times cos of passenger injuries including a stewardess with a broken leg. They always warn and ppl keep their belts on.

lol daft comment since coaches don’t have seatbelts, not the ones I’ve been on anyway! You wear your seatbelt for take off and landing, seatbelt sign comes on to remove seatbelt - very standard practice in all flights. Seatbelt sign comes back on for extreme turbulence, it didn’t in this case as far as I’m aware, hence them mentioning air stewardess’ meals going everywhere from their trolleys, all were unprepared. Hardly the victims fault!
@@LauraBidingCitizen you should always just keep your seatbelt on when your sat down though, i do, for this exact reason, he literally says in the interview that this is the advice given on airlines. The seatbelt comes on to tell you you must return to your seat more than putting seatbelt on.
@@CreativeCache101 I don’t necessarily disagree, but if airlines advice was to keep your seatbelt on, why do they announce it’s fine to undo to your seatbelt once you’re in the air? That seems incredibly backwards to me.
@@LauraBidingCitizen they say your free to move around the cabin, obviously when your not they expect you to keep your seat belt on but it's honestly always amazed me how happily people will just not wear a seat belt if they think they can, despite it being for their own safety.

6000ft over a minute and a half would just feel like a descent and not like falling
The plane dropped 100-150 feet then the pilot took the plane in a controlled descent another 6000ft over 5 mins.
You'll be fine, my man. Things like this are a rarity. You're much more likely to have an accident on the car journey to the airport.
I fly in two days. I used to be terrified but I'm okay now. A long haul flight from UK to US helped. Also on the way back to the UK, it was a very late flight and snowing, and the pilot said "we'll likely experience around 5 hours of turbulence due to the cold and winds over the Atlantic". I got so bored of the turbulence and shaking it basically dissipated all my fear and I've been mostly okay since.

I can't understand why the host try to associate this turbulence with climate change. From the narrative it seems quite obvious that it is an unexpected phenomenon.
Normal turbulence and clear air turbulence happens very very often. It doesnt make the news normally. Only did this time because of the 73 year old gent.
Quickly shut down by the pilot though. Didn't take the bait.

The seatbelt sign going off does not mean undo your seatbelt and sit sit in your seat, it means you are free to get up and move around the plane. On shorthaul go to the toilet and on a long haul maybe stretch your legs. On ret5to your seat you put the seatbelt back on *always*

This aircraft did not fall 6000 feet. Data shows it actually went up then down only 300 to 400 feet after which it descended by pilots command to a lower altitude.

Good example of how the media sensationalise everything. The 6000ft drop was in mins and part of standard procedure. Wondered how long it would take for climate change to be raised 🤦🏻♂️ he shoots that down immediately by saying instances of turbulence are becoming less😂

I can remember an incident when flying back to Skopje Airport. We were on a civilian, passenger aircraft, and on the way back from leave.
We were thousands of feet up, and nothing could be seen below us when i looked out of the window. We suddenly hit bad turbulence, and the aircraft dropped dramatically. People flew out of their seats and hit their heads. Stewardesses flew in the air. I was lucky, I had my seat belt on.
When I looked out of the window, I could see the sea below us. We had dropped thousands of feet in an instant. It was a strange feeling when the engines seemed to go silent as we dropped like a brick. Our was a definite drop and not a descent.
Still havnt heard how he died or how a seatbelt would have prevented it,everybody in the media seems so focused on the seatbelts.
His head hit the cabin roof and broke his neck.

Seat belts stop you bouncing around the cabin which is almost exclusively the source of injury in turbulence. They’re very effective.

The deviation caused by the turbulence was about 400ft, followed by a controlled 6000ft descent to get out of the weather, so the overdramatised 'we know the plane dropped 6000ft' was intentional after the turbulence.
Stop talking garbage about wearing seat belts all the time
The plane didn't "drop" 6000 ft. The 6000 ft descent was a controlled descent to a new flight level as part of the flight path to Bangkok. This was after the turbulence event. It is important to do fact checking and not report false information. Will you post a video to apologise for providing false information?

What, the pilots who flew straight through an area of convective weather, when most other aircraft in the vicinity had been flying around it for the previous couple of hours?
There was extensive weather in the area. The question is how they came to fly through it. Unfortunate decision? Improper monitoring? I’m assuming their weather radar was on (it would at least have to be functioning to have dispatched in the first place) but whether they were paying sufficient attention to it or not will need to be ascertained in the inevitable enquiry.
I’d imagine they’ll say it was clear air turbulence, which is very difficult to avoid without reports from other aircraft or very accurate forecasting, but pretty much everyone else in the same airspace were dodging the tops of CBs. (Cumulonimbus clouds, which are large, convective clouds with a whole load of vertical energy.)
Trying to push climate change again...he shuts that down beautifully. Condolences to the victims family.
A freak weather event is the least likely scenario, surely? Experienced passenger flyers will tell you they are used to being warned that turbulence is coming and get themselves buckled up. Not saying it was totally impossible, but on that scale? . . . No warnings from the tech? No chance of pilot error? Seems unlikely to me?

He’s wrong. Flat wring. There are studies with significant evidence ti show it’s getting worse. I used to know a Chris and he’s not flown for some years after reaching retirement age. He also spent his last years in Europe where clear air turbulence is less common.
That's not what is being suggested. She was referring to a study that has found that instances of turbulence are becoming more frequent (which would make sense with changing weather patterns etc). He didn't listen to the question properly
As ex cabin crew, turbulence was a common occurrence. Clear air turbulence rare, but can happen. Nothing to do with climate change

Lots of people don't realise what they're actually doing when they fly. You're in a aluminium or carbon fibre tube hurtling through the troposphere & stratosphere at 500mph. I never wait for the captain to illuminated the seatbelt signs. Mine is always on unless I'm going to the toilet or stretching my legs for 5 mins on a long haul flight.

The worst the atmosphere gets the more turbulence…that’s a simple fact.
This has brought to my mind the rogue waves that were once thought to be myths and exaggerations but turned out to 💯 true. This could be a new type of turbulence which could be called Rogue turbulence or rogue winds, similar to rogue waves in that they appear suddenly and without warning but are relatively rare freak events.
Its not like rogue waves. Normal turbulence and clear air turbulence happens very very often. It doesnt make the news normally. Only did this time because of the 73 year old gent.
Must have been a very frightening experience for all those passengers travelling in the aeroplane , including pilots and staff . Condolences to the family of the man that died in the aeroplane .

This was a case of clear air turbulence which could happen anytime anywhere. This case is not strange just very unfortunate for the people on that plane.

Yes, you're absolutely right. Only Boeing aircraft experience severe turbulence but somehow miraculously survive it. Of course, Airbus aircraft never experience turbulence. They have the ability to 'see' clear air turbulence ahead even though no such technology exists 😀
