We first saw TOP in Cleveland Ohio at the Agora when they just released East Bay grease. No one knew them, there were maybe 20 people in the audience. The next time they came back to Cleveland you couldn't get into the club. One of the greatest groups of all time and should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. They are real musicians and have "Soul with a capital S."

One of my favorite horn bands from the 70s along with EW&F, Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Parliament etc. Shoutout to my uncle for introducing me to these awesome bands when I was young ...

Nice Dave Grohl reference. That's actually tenor sax player Emilio Castillo, who has been the leader of Tower of Power for more than 50 years and still going strong.

Give a listen to their incredibly funky "What Is Hip", and their other great ballad, "You're Still A Young Man". The greatest horn band to come out of the Bay area.

One of the great soul jams from 1973. Loved it then and 50 years later it still gives me goosebumps.

From Oakland, California. Tower of Power. The best horn band of the seventies. Not a bad tune from these guys.. That's Lenny Williams on lead vocals here.

Lenny Williams was the best lead singer TOP ever had. Kudos to Jay Spell the blind pianist who sit in on this song.. RIP Jay. Shout to Greg Adams for the nice jazz flugelhorn solo.

Uh... except that the whole song is the studio version, with strings, multiple trumpets, etc. Lip synching at its finest !!

There's about 40 YEARS between that "Soul Train" performance (which was a dub from the studio version of the songs) and the "What is Hip?" Live performance. The short trumpet player was Mic Gillete, the same guy who was switching between trumpet and trombone in "WiH". The white sax player ("Dave Grohl") is actually the founder of the band, Emilio Castillo. The. The bari sax player to his right is the "Funky Doctor," Stephen Kupka. Rocco Prestia on bass, and David Garibaldi on drums... All of these guys were also in the "What is Hip" live video. Today Mic and Rocco have passed away, but David, Mimi, and The Doc still perform with the full band, and are just as funky today as they were 55 years ago.

aka "Mad Dad" Yeah been a TOP fan for their entire 50+ years and
Lenny Williams remains one of my favorite lead vocalists for the band.
The distinctive sound of Tower of Power always comes through strong!

People didnt stop dancing because that was the quality of music back then. We took it for granted. It was a time of high quality music in every musical genre. Music today is basically prepacked junk, Unless you talking about classical or jazz. Those genres have real musicians, pros.

Chase. Get It On. I really think you should. It's nothing like this, but it's as good in its own unique direction as this is in its own direction. The band name is Chase. The song is Get It On. I think you'll kinda love it.

Because I I loved "You're Still A Young Man" and "Sparkling In The Sand" by the original singer (RIP) Rick Stevens, I now realize I like Lenny Williams better. Perhaps because he became TOP and the bad timing involved in Rick Stevens part. Yes! He can make you calm the way he makes it look so interesting. Especially the other part of this Soul Train segment singing "This Time Its Real" very calm making with his stage presence.

That's Lenny Williams he as their premier lead singer for years. He wound up in San Quentin for Murder. I know My brother was a prison Sgt there for many years. And had Lenny on his tier/level
for years as well as Buddy Miles, and Charles Manson.
    We've been Tower Of Power,
TOP fans for years six concerts so far. Like your
    Screening. God Bless

2:05. "A lotta horns right there." Dude, there were ZERO horns at that point. You're such a dope. I don't think you'd know a piano from a horse. BTW, your backward baseball cap tells us all we need to know. Neither of you have the musical sensibility to appreciate something like this.
