- Hot Wheels Turbo Racing is a racing video game for the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation released in 1999. It features vehicles based on the Hot Wheels series of toys. It also features Kyle Petty's 1999 NASCAR stock car, as it was sponsored by Hot Wheels. It also features music from artists like Primus and Mix Master Mike.
The focus of the game is racing one of a selection of cars through various themed tracks. Secret tracks can be accessed by winning and new cars can be used by finding the 'new car' bonuses hidden in each stage.
As seen in the hint screens, using the controller to perform various stunts from jumping off points gains 'turbos' which allow short bursts of speed. The car in use will take damage based on running into obstacles or other players. Icons found around the track give differing performance enhancements.
The game requires a memory card in order to save progress.
The PlayStation version featured full-length, CD quality songs including "Fuel" by Metallica thanks to its CD-based media having a much larger amount of memory space than the N64 cartridge. However, due to the systems' limitations for 3-D visuals, the graphics in the PS1 version are very noticeably pixellated and have a lot of polygon tearing (a.k.a., jagged edges). Environment pop-up and draw-in distance (fog) is slightly more noticeable than the Nintendo 64 version.
The Nintendo 64 version includes six songs, though each of them have been reduced in length and are almost entirely without vocals. The sound quality for these music tracks have also been downgraded and are slightly muffled. This version is also missing the song from Metallica. This version does include the many voice clips that are played when you execute a stunt. Also, this version uses Anti-Aliasing so the graphics are smooth and most of the polygon tearing has been eliminated. In addition, this version has slightly less pop-up and a slightly improved draw-in distance, and so you will able to see a bit more in the distance.

It looks way better when you play it on the real console connected to a CRT TV. New LCDs make old games look all stretched and pixelated.

Especially the intro theme that also used by TDOR (TEST DRIVE OFF ROAD) WIDE OPEN PS2.

This game remastered would instantly make it thee greatest racing game that ever lived. It's potential back in the day was unmatched. Easily the benchmark for all racing games.
The closest thing we got to a remastered version was Hot Wheels Unleashed.

This game was my childhood.
I don't think anything at the time matched (or even came close) to the speed of this game. And I know someone'll say F-Zero was better for the sense of speed, but F-Zero's maps just weren't interesting or unique, while this game had interesting maps that were all different from one another, with hazards to avoid, and secrets to find. All while keeping a fast sense of speed.

Need for Speed Rumble was a great one for this era on ps1, I actually never played this Hot Wheels game but I played rumble and it suggested me this vid lol. Surprised I never seen this game around where I was from.

He estado jugando desde hace algunas semanas juegos retro en PS1, del PS2, SNES y la verdad, aunque los gráficos hoy nos parecen nada comparado alo que tenemos...la calidad de los juegos era mejor en la mayoría. El contenido y la trama te enganchaba....hoy pocos juegos logran eso en mi caso.

I use to play the crap out of this game and hearing the song Fuel made it seeing as how Metallica is my favorite band.
Mia Taylor (Ayumu's close friend from Prima Porta) and Ayumu Uehara also a big fan of Metallica band.
Back then there were cd walkmans and the game disc could actually be read and you could listen to the game's soundtrack from the walkman. Blew my mind then and miss being able to do that now.

@timowthie Consoles and games still continue to work after something else comes out. You could still play it today. Not every kid has the newest latest greatest consoles and games, but thats ok because there are tons of fun games on older systems. I still play alot of older games.

25 years after the release of HOT WHEELS TURBO RACING, its still a legendary game, especially the intro movie and the soundtrack that also carried on in TEST DRIVE OFF ROAD WIDE OPEN PS2.
This was a game I was obsessed with when I was a young kid. Actually got me to become a big fan of Metallica when I originally heard "Fuel" on the soundtrack. I would actually disable all the other songs and just have that one play 😂 also another cool tidbit about this game was you could put it in a CD player and would play the songs. For a young kid, it was a game changer! Then Napster came out and well yeah lol

Ah I remember this game, I used to always use Kyle Petty's Stock car from Nascar in this and I loved it as a kid because it was one of the coolest cars I've seen at the time, still one of my favorite cars to this day actually while I like to play with the other cars on this game but I guess the Hot Wheels Stock car has a place in my heart since yeah but either way this game was a very great game, it's definitely a hidden gem but I also think this game also introduced me to Metallica at a young age also so I can't hate this game I think it deserves more attention then it has but you know the game is still a great game in my opinion and still one of my favorite games to this day.
