    Don't forget the TV equipment fees, along with the Broadcast TV fee and the Sports TV fee. Add them all up and they cost more than the actual TV plan price. In other words, when you show a $70 fee for the Popular TV option, that's only about half of the total monthly bill depending on how many cable boxes you need. Even on a 2 year contract, including internet, the total price with two cable boxes and a gateway, you're looking at more than $200. That's why so many people hate Comcast/Xfinity. You sign up for 2 years expecting a certain price, but in reality you wind up paying at least double that amount. And the only part of the price, even on a contract, that doesn't change is the base price. They can and will change the prices for the Broadcast and Sports fees whenever they want, and the same applies to rental fees for equipment. You can bet they will also play pricing games with these new streaming bundles and try to lock you into a 2 year contract. The old dog is not likely to change it's spots.

      Last I checked, they had changed the law and they must honor the advertised price without any "fees". They can still try the two year contract deal, but if they advertise $64.95 for gigabit internet, the total bill is $64.95. That said, I think cable companies underestimate how passionately consumers hate them. I will pay extra to avoid dealing with them.

    I gave cable providers here in Canada a special salute 4 years ago. They squeeze Canadians left right and center. The Canadian government passed a federal requirement that streaming services had to pay a fee for streaming in Canada. The incumbents that own the internet also own the cellular networks as well. They have bought up the small cell providers. There are no small internet providers. I pay for Netflix and that is it and that price is going up because they are cancelling their grandfathered in plan.

    • @killer2600
      @killer2600 25 дней назад +3

      That would be a bogus charge because they aren't connecting or disconnecting anything. A cable TV or phone company has to make or break a physical connection so they can charge fees for doing so. A streaming company doesn't have such setups. When you connect to RUclips, you don't pay them a connection fee nor would you - they don't have to do anything different for just you to be able to connect to them that they don't already do to allow any of their users to connect.

    Let me remind people why people started cutting the cord. It was never about the price of cable, it was the absolute refusal to give the customer a la carte choices.
    Even senator John McCain went to war against the cable companies when it came to ala carte services with cable. Me personally, I would not have had ESPN. But since the cable companies, comcast, didn't give me a choice I cut the cord.

    • @TexMarque
      @TexMarque 25 дней назад +5

      Disney is the reason you had ESPN in all packages or no Disney channels; that was the deal that cable was forced to accept. All the content providers used their leverage for decades until the internet and Netflix forced a change.

      Cutting the cord was also about cutting out commercials. If they sell bundles without commercials at a reasonable price, it will succeed. If they don't offer bundles without commercials or they charge outrageous prices for them, they won't be any better off than they are now.

  • @andygraning2190

    Long story short the business model is collapsing and now the entertainment companies are trying to make up ground. The cable business was one of the most profitable enterprises ever. Forcing everyone to pay for channels they didn’t want, from sports to home shopping. When cord cutting started in earnest 7 to 8 years ago conventional wisdom was viewers would replace cable with a cable alternative like Sling TV or PSVue. Turns out one in three cord cutters felt they needed a live TV service. This trickled down to cable channels and your local network affiliates who as of the mid 2000s were making more money from retransmission fees than selling ads.

      That's ok they already rape you on internet charges. Back before streaming stole cable TV revenue, internet was really cheap compared to cable TV subscription. When people started dropping cable tv for streaming, the cable companies starting jacking up the price for internet. On top of that, they extort streaming companies who would like their customers to have a better streaming experience, who in turn pass the costs along until it finally reaches you - the end user/viewer.

    I’m wondering how ATSC 3.0 will affect the shapeshifting infrastructure?
    Soon, we should be able to easily access the local and perhaps more traditional “broadcast” type content via ATSC 3.0. This could make for an even smarter, smart TV. Especially, if the task of content browsing, screening, planning-to-watch, and recording becomes more democratized via hardware/software DVR technologies (TiVo, Tablo, etc.). Especially if that technology is somehow integrated into the average “smart” TV!

      I agree with your assessment. Cable and satellite TV service isn't as profitable anymore. Bundling the streaming services with a significant discount is a good move for Comcast. Internet service and mobile phone service is now the cash cow for providers like Charter and Comcast. I remember when I called Comcast to drop cable TV service last year, they didn't go through the "better deal" schtick that they did 5-6 years ago. They offered me a 12 month discount for the next step up in Internet speed. I just signed up for Comcast's Xfinity Mobile BOGO for their tier 1 unlimited mobile service for a year, and me and my significant other both have Pixel 7 phones, we get a 10.00 discount for 12 months for each of our phones, since we were able to bring our own phones. Even when the BOGO deal and 10.00/month off deal goes away, we will still save a nice chunk of $$$ than what we were paying for T-Mobile service.

    Physical media, kodi with free over the air channels and modded version youtube to bypass the ads and bypass the sponsors in the youtube videos is better than having to pay overpriced subscription fees when they keep on increasing the subscription fees and still include ads for paid subscription fees that would be based on tiers from the lowest tier to the highest tier. Out of nowhere the tv providers would just keep on nickel and dimming the consumers just to get rid of the ads or minimalized amount of ads being showed for the highest tier than eventually a premium tier. For example, the lowest tier would have the most ads and the highest tier would have a least amount of ads and than a premium tier would be introduced later on and have no ads by paying for a premium price with no ads. The corporations and tv providers might change there might and charge fees for every channel instead of providing bundles because it's just a temporary solution. Nowadays the large majority of products and services are full of cash grabbing schemes in order to make a quick buck and that they want to go the ala carte route with streaming on top of subscription fees that are already included in the terms and conditions with force arbitration.

    Yeah for xfinity tv it's $30 just for the tv privilege fee tax (rebroadcast) ..
    On any plan from boomer base local to every thing ever $300 plan..
    Yeah it's totally insane

    Comcast will play their normal games. They'll advertise the streaming bundle for $50/mo, and you'll end up paying $200/mo.

    I don't subscribe to more than 1 or 2 streaming services at a time. I watch all the content I want to consume on their service then drop them. This way my monthly streaming bill is about the same. I also get the lowest priced tier I can from my ISP. The speed is more than fast enough for me and I don't give them a dime more than I need to. If it's done in a strategic way ala carte services still saves me the most money.

    I would rather pay a little more each month to have the freedom to quit one of these streaming services. Learn the hard way that lock-in is the ultimate enemy. For instance, AT&t prepaid will give you a year for $300 at 8 GB a month or something. It's 30 bucks a month for 5 GB. Under the former if AT&t pisses you off you can't leave at least not for a while..
    I'm just officially done with postpaid carriers and the worst is trade-ins that involve bill credits. That was the worst decision I ever made.
    It's also helpful that if you live with other people you can each pay for one subscription service a month or something and then share passwords but obviously these days you might have to live in the same house with them.

    The price of cable and streaming sites, is only a small part of the problem. The real problem is that TV and streaming companies are producing Shyte programming that no one wants to watch ! They are all in with their DEI programming and productions and Disney, Netflix and even the BBC with Doctor Who are seeing the lowest ratings of their shows in history

    People paying for the commercial subscription in or out of the bundles is more of the problem I see. Cable started out without commercials and then moved to commercials that got more and more obtrusive which became more of a problem for me. Don't think "they" won't do the same thing with internet streaming if they see people are willing to pay for these commercial tiers at a slightly cheaper rate which will only go up in price if they completely switch to the paid commercial model like cable.
