the thing about a K5LA that was so popular was that each one seemed to have its own "character" per-say. A lot like a steam whistle. I prefer the M5's myself, but I really like this compilation! Job well done!
K5LA horns are my favorite old school Train horns from CSX to hear in the past 2000s but going in reverse 1990s or 1980s same thing they can be still herd
I've heard an S-5T that was much higher in pitch, for a much different chord, but still the same scheme of notes. It was still an S-5T. Yours sound really good!
Thank you. The train you're talking about at 1:00 was Q341 after being yarded, at 3:45 am. It was dead quiet, and COLD! The engineer was using a light grip on that valve, just enough to get all five humming. It was better in person.-Jeffrey
Bugger covers on engine horns have been around for a while. While they do protect against bugs and insects, they are no match for tree limbs (which consequently cause horns to sound terrible dischord) Covers are hit and miss... they get torn, damaged, ripped, go missing. Most of the dirt/fouling comes from oil and crud being blown straight into the horn with its air supply.
Several causes. Age. Older K5s sound different than newer ones..Nathan outsources the casting to different locations, and the exact specs can be lost in translation. Diaphrams go bad, power chambers get oily (because the air system is un filtered), sometimes bells get replaced with the wrong one, making some have two of the same bell. One or more may be not sounding, causing very interesting results... etc
He's given out long blasts because this area is known as "Suicide Alley". The shot is misleading, because it is in a highly populated area in a city. Whenever I was running through there, always gave long horn warnings. It makes you wiggle in your seat.
You asked what the third motor was in consist, and it's a CSX RDMT... RoaDMaTe, built from a GP35....no primemover, no generator, ....just traction motors and dynamics.-Jeffrey
'round these parts foamer is actually a "foamer" term. We use both "Whistledicks" and "Fuckin' Hats"--because they (we, lol) always wear railroad hats.
Count all of the CSX freight engines. Then count the passenger train diesels in NJT and AMTRAK. Then you have more than good ones. It doesn't have to only have the speed, but power too.
@nssd70m2 Almost all CSX SD70MACs have those style K5LA so you'll hear one soon enough if you railfan a CSX line. No one else's MACs do. Too bad for them.
if you haven't noticed we are to busy to do anything, goods come in ever minute the only thing we can do is get stronger, faster, quiter and cleaner locomotives, and stop being childish please...
There is no train better than an american train! Our trains are more powerful and move more than any other countries trains could ever hope to move! Plus we have horns that are actually horns....not these little 2 note things that can only blow single note at a time.

That one almost sounds like an M5. Love it!
Fantastic!
The RS5TRF sounds most like the recording I found that said "S5-T".

love the k5la. amtrak and csx for life.
I absolutely love the K5LA on that SD70MAC starting at 1:41. Do you know what # SD70MAC that is?
2:30 WHAT TYPE OF nathan k5la is that
That's likely a Tagless Early-90s K5LA (choked)
the s5t isn't the king, now the the king is the superior, amazing, outstanding RS5T-RRO
I need to put this on my pickup.

The horn at 1:41 was beautiful
WOOOO K5LA!!!
The 2011 k5la is the queen horn
What's the 3rd loco in the train that appears at 0:35?
'round these parts foamer is actually a "foamer" term. We use both "Whistledicks" and "Fuckin' Hats"--because they (we, lol) always wear railroad hats.
1:38 I wish the engine number was seen
I’m not sure, but I think it’s 8187 or 8297
It's actually 8167.
Amen! The K5LA is nice, but the RS5 is the king of all horns.
How big of an air tank would I need to install to power these on an automobile?
1:24 What's the name of that city.
Copper Cruz Cityville
I missed this video! You had it up awhile ago didn't you?
at 1:41 /2:08 sounds the best!!

Now that is a horn
I really love the scene at 0:50 seconds
The one at 1:02 sounded amazing.
My favorite one was at 2:08 with the one high tone.
