I am german . A number of years ago, a coworker from rural Brandenburg, told me this. When wwll started , in his little village there was no air attack siren so for the time, between start of war and installing the siren, the Amtsdiener/ Büttel ( town crier ?) had to run through the village with his bell to warn the people. There was a law, that windows had been at night covered with something black, that no light came out. One day a ,test' was made. The Amtsdiener ran through the village with his bell and shouted : Luftangriff ( air raid) ! The surprised inhabitants opened the windows, to look why the Amtsdiener runs through the village at night, and the streets had been enlighted!!!!

Yep.. that SS marking looks totally sketchy, does not even match the quality of the rest of the engraving. seems like people were putting SS markings on everything in the 70's to increase mystique and value.

I'm surprised the grip panels on the FWB pistol are black plastic. I seem to remember Tom commenting that factory engraved Walthers would typically have fancier grips. This could add to the idea that the owner had the gun for several years before sending it in to be engraved.

    Nicely done.
Since the initials and the Z appear professionally done the top look like the owner decided they wanted more and added the SS and skull. That would be my take on your story. Your information fits and the extra fits
Then the question becomes who added that. - the general or the GI that ended up with it..

That's not a Z, that's a wolfsangel. You know, the same symbol as the well known "not nazi at all" Azov ukrainian regiment. For good measure, they even couple that with a "not nazi at all" black sun ...
    So, not a Z.

Kenn-Nummer = ID-Number; RL = Reichsanstalt für Luftschutz; All products that were to be manufactured, advertised and sold for air protection purposes had to be tested and approved for their suitability. Air raid shelters that tested positive were assigned an identification number with which they also had to be marked. § 8 is the corresponding paragraph in the air raid law.

I may be mistaken, as I watched this in a small phone, but it looks like the first gun has the Black Sun incorporated into the floral pattern. A little research into that symbol might indicate that it belonged to an SS officer as well. The same symbol is central in Himmlers Vebelburg castle.

I own a SS Ring showing the black sun and I made a lot of a research on it.
It has to be mentioned that only few people have been aware of the black sun during ww2 and mostly high ranking SS Members.

I checkered the grips and added the Walther Banner. The Walther here with Ivory grips has been exposed to heat; heat cracks Ivory. Beautiful engraving.

i know i'm late, but that skull on top of the SS logo is a freikorps skull from the end of WW1. on friedrich wilhelm bock's page on the website tracesofwar, it mentions that he was in the freikorps for the end of WW1 and a bit after that (in freikorps baltikum). that's where he started his military career and that's why he got awarded the eisernes kreuz. so i would say that you actually have his gun, everything makes sense. very, very cool piece of history

Thank you for sharing. I was given, as a Christmas gift, a Walther P-38. My wife bought it from her brother. I had it for about ten years, and never fired it. The thing was made in 1942 at the Mauser facility, and had fine tolerances, was made well. The serial numbers had been exed over and Russian numbers added. I sometimes wondered if innocents had been murdered with it, by Nazis or Russians. I was happy to sell it back to my brother-in-law.

IF THIS REALLY BELONGED TO AN OFFICER OF THE POLIZEI DIVISION READ WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE IT BELONGED TO
    1944 and Distomo massacre
    Main article: Distomo massacre
The division remained in Greece until August 1944 before being recalled to face the advancing Red Army at Belgrade.[3] It again suffered heavy losses.[citation needed]
While in Greece, the division committed war crimes and atrocities against the civilian population under the guise of "anti-partisan" warfare. In particular they were responsible for the Kleisoura massacre[4][5][6] and the Distomo massacre; the latter being one of the worst atrocities committed by the Waffen-SS during World War II. On June 10, 1944, for over two hours, troops of the division under the command of Fritz Lautenbach went door to door and massacred Greek civilians as part of a "retaliation measure" for a Greek Resistance attack upon the unit. A total of 214 men, women and children were killed in Distomo,[7] a small village near Delphi.[8] According to survivors, SS men "bayoneted babies in their cribs, stabbed pregnant women, and beheaded the village priest."[3][9]
Elements of this division committed atrocities in the mountains of central Greece ("Ρούμελη") during May and June 1944 that resulted in the destruction of Sperchiada and the massacre of 28 civilians in Ipati. The division later participated in Operation Kreuzotter (5-31 August 1944), an attempt to eradicate Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS) bases from the same mountains. The operation was a military failure, but resulted in the killing of 170 civilians and the partial or complete destruction of dozens of villages and cities.[10]

I think both of those Walthers are chambered for the .32 auto cartridge which is pretty anemic for self-defense by today's standards. Even with modern self-defense loads, the .32 auto still doesn't deliver "like a brick through a plate-glass window".

The type of engraving is called a "rose and scroll" it is common in English guns, however it looks like it was carried out by someone who has not engraved the style before as it looks "odd"
