I remember the Dragonmaid thing. I think the problem was that people kept trying to play it as a wombo combo deck similar to Chaos Thunder Dragon, when it was always more like a midrange deck like Salamangreat. Yugioh players didn't even know the term midrange EXISTED until like late 2020. Before that it was either "Control" or "combo".

Dragoon was insanely good and meta warping in tcg as well, you'll never buy me with MegaCapitalG's arguments.
Sure, having a "one special summon omni negate towers in TOSS format" was ridiculous, but what about one of the best endpoint for a combo line we ever had?
Going first at worse it was a dude aiming for combo's choke points once you've baited most of your opponent's interactions.
Going second it represented an easy line for lethal being able to pop 2 and burn while boosting himself if you'd dare to activate anything.
I believe going second it was even more troublesome since Kaijus and Talents were unusable and Droplet maybe got wasted onto something else.
Clearly the problem card during that period was Verte, and DPE was even more flexible allowing you to go +2 next turn, but having played extensively drytron format Dragoon felt as the furthest thing from a flop .

Spright's lack of dominance in the TCG can almost entirely be attributed to POTE also containing Garura. The existence of that card alone reshaped the Spright end board from Elf + Toad + Red + Carrot to Elf + Toad + Djinn Buster because you had to play around Super Poly. in general you want each summon to be more high impact in formats with maxx “c”, this is also why adventure tenyi is crazy in the ocg, each summon means so much, you can make barronne in 2 special summons, dpe in 1 or 3, set up adventure in 1, and you can fit tons of hand traps into adventure tenyi so if you’re in halq format you can very reasonably just do nothing pass and still reliably stop a halq play with your hand traps alone, or just set up smth simple with only 1 or 2 summons thats should be enough to interrupt your opponents plays. whereas something like anything with dangers (e.g. smth like spyral) where it takes ages to get a playable board, stuff that can’t reasonably stop before the combo is done and survive, is just not gonna be as good in a maxx “c” format.

Big Bang OTK was a powerful OCG deck that would never work in the TCG because of a ruling difference. Originally in the OCG, Gift of the Mystical Elf was ruled that each 300 LP gained was a separate gain, so if for example there were five monsters on the field you would gain 300 five times instead of gaining 1500 once. This interacted with Fire Princess (Big Bang Girl in the OCG) where if you had multiple Gifts of the Mystical Elf and multiple Fire Princesses you would burn your opponent for enough times to win. But by the time the TCG started coming out in 2002, Gift of the Mystical Elf had already had its ruling changed so that the life points gained are all just a single gain.

We all joke about Phantom Knight players overhyping the deck "it'll be meta this format!" but I think maybe 80% of Phantom Knight mains live in Japan. I don't think Rescue Ace will be as tier 1 as it was in the OCG, but I don't think its unplayable/do not take to YCS level bad, it has a pretty decent Kashtira matchup and its Purrely matchup is also pretty good. Maxx-C shouldn't be a reason for Rescue Ace outperforming Labrynth and Vanqiush Soul in the OCG two decks that also benefit a lot from Maxx-C.
But anyways it doesn't matter, the deck becomes super cracked post AGOV (43% top spots in the last Next-Play OCG tournament).

Ash is not a turn stopper or even main deck staple in the TCG because you can extend past it.
You cannot beat Maxx "C" by extending, meaning Ash, and by extension omni negates like Baronne and Dragoon, are a lot stronger.
Decks that are successful in the OCG need to navigate through both cards

It was actually more so that they found out Synchro Tear was playable, which runs the Ishizus, and with how much Tri-Brigade needs the GY, it wasn't particularly a great match up for one of the top decks at the time, it still saw play just not as much, and later down the line Elf was banned and Blue was limited which effectively made it just Old Tri-Brigade that is a bit more consistent that's about it. The deck is like the 3rd best deck in Master duel right now or something.

If they want less cards banned/more variety in deck building, Maxx "C" makes cards like Ash, Called, Cross, and Droll far more powerful. Meaning a third of your deck will be based around these cards.
Maxx C is like Scheherazade in MTG. Unfun, complicates games for no reason, noncommittal, so on so forth. The card might as well read "Your opponent chooses one effect for you to activate:
      1: Draw Seven Cards
