I remember the Dragonmaid thing. I think the problem was that people kept trying to play it as a wombo combo deck similar to Chaos Thunder Dragon, when it was always more like a midrange deck like Salamangreat. Yugioh players didn't even know the term midrange EXISTED until like late 2020. Before that it was either "Control" or "combo".
Even then their definition of control is just combo but with slightly less summons most of the time they end on the same big board of negates
@@michaelkehathat is midrange
@@Xeamless there is no such thing as true mid range in Yugioh because you would need for a game to develop more than a turn a pop before the outcome is generally decided for midrange to be a viable deck style what yugioh calls midrange is just slower combo
I still don't know what midrange means in the context of yugioh
@@kaisermaximal8123 it takes you two turns of solitaire to make your opponent scoop cause they didn't have a hand full of specific outs which players think is balanced to require that many mandatory cards just to get to have a turn instead of one
Reducing the TCG from West (America, Europe, etc) to just America, and the OCG from East (Japan, China, Korea and Asia in general) to just Japan was the most American think I’ve ever heard Joseph 😂
What is a europe?
Only two relevant countries in each group.
What is a Corea?
Europe doesn't count.
@@LuckingsworthI mean the TCG has US, Canada, the UK and Germany. I’d say those are all fairly relevant Yugioh demographics.
I think the reason Dragoon was so good in the OCG was that it’s the strongest boss monster you can spit out in a singular summon (Red-Eyes Fusion), which plays around maxx C super well
Nah, I'd say its more because droplet and talents weren't printed when it came out initially. They got dragoon like one or two sets before rotd in the ocg but we got it after rotd and dragoon just had more main decked answers.
Both answers are solid actually
Dragoon with Maxx C. Too strong.
Dragoon was insanely good and meta warping in tcg as well, you'll never buy me with MegaCapitalG's arguments.
Sure, having a "one special summon omni negate towers in TOSS format" was ridiculous, but what about one of the best endpoint for a combo line we ever had?
Going first at worse it was a dude aiming for combo's choke points once you've baited most of your opponent's interactions.
Going second it represented an easy line for lethal being able to pop 2 and burn while boosting himself if you'd dare to activate anything.
I believe going second it was even more troublesome since Kaijus and Talents were unusable and Droplet maybe got wasted onto something else.
Clearly the problem card during that period was Verte, and DPE was even more flexible allowing you to go +2 next turn, but having played extensively drytron format Dragoon felt as the furthest thing from a flop .
I need a time machine banlist check for if the OCG still had grinder golem and pre-errata firewall still legal in some capacity because Dragoon also had the capacity to be an ftk or an otk going second.
"We are here with another X thread"
That just sounds wrong
Y'know, it's kinda a double entendre.

And X Thread as in "X" thread, as in, "fill in the blank" thread.
Thank Elon for that
To address why Zefra just fizzled over here, it's due how other decks could achieve a similar end board for less and the pricing of some of the Zefra cards were just bananas at the time. So mindset was why go for this expensive combo heavy deck, when the other options we have can achieve a similar result and cost less to build.
Wut. Zefra Guardragon was incredibly cheap, and unreasonably powerful at the time. TCG just doesnt like pend.
@@TheEagleAndTheApple Not at the time. Some of the extra deck cards were worth an arm and a leg, not helping that this was during a period in which the minute a field spell was seen as core to a tier 1 deck it would balloon in price over night. The TCG prices have and always will be insane, as well as being a factor in why certain strong decks just don't become top tier over here.

Yeah it was sad to see zefra flop. It's genuinely my favorite pendulum deck but it's hard to justify what it did over any other deck at pretty much any point.
OCG Pendulum player is just that good. In Master Duel, you will most likely encounter 2 types of pendulum player, one is alphabet username garbagale, the other is japanese username god.
It’s gotta be because their PSCT format is so much more legible, makes so much of a difference for comprehending a pend card compared to other ones
@@fryenchill2817 yeah OCG PSCT is more Comprehensible compard to TCG
Thats why when OCG announce they would release Asean English again i wish it follow the OCG PSCT
Spright's lack of dominance in the TCG can almost entirely be attributed to POTE also containing Garura. The existence of that card alone reshaped the Spright end board from Elf + Toad + Red + Carrot to Elf + Toad + Djinn Buster because you had to play around Super Poly. It was too late when it was discovered that Runick Spright was the best Spright deck (maybe best deck in the format) because it rose to prominence right before the Ishizu cards were released.
OCG Pendulum players are just build different. In a format permanently hostile to everything they do they almost always find a way to top with Pendulum Magician, Endymion or Zefra.
Just look at Master Duel, except for the latest cup, which is dominated by Tear 0 and Sprights. There's one or two Pendulum deck players that placed in top 10
and dont forget Vaylantz with FTK/ Dyno fossil secret village lock. Now they also run roll back ghost meet girl
The deck just capable with all degenerate lock smh
Pendulum players in both metas have the same advantage: People hate reading long card text and also have difficulty understanding how the effects interact
Source: I play Endymion and win through ignorant opponents quite often
@@monstermilk6092 To be fair, almost all your interruption has only soft once-per-turn clauses.
I can explain the 3 Ogiers, it was because the combo lines that were resistant to Nibiru started off with Ogiers, since you could send God Phoenix Gearfriend to the GY with it and recover it with Renauld later on.
A really big difference I wasn't able to highlight was that the OCG had more copies of Emergency Teleport than we did at the time, which meant they could run Psi-Reflector as an incredibly easy way to just make Level 9 synchros for free.
Ogier coming back around to being the best Infernoble normal summon is vindicating. I always felt perfectly safe opening Ogier and a way to Renaud.
There was no nibiru when infernoble was first released in the ocg. Rise of the duelist came out around may and they didn't get nibiru and dark ruler no more until a few months later.
It's funny how so many people STILL don't comprehend how OCG is it's own entire separate thing from the TCG and not just "TCG but with newer cards" specifically how Maxx C being legal completely warps the whole meta
I would argue that the card existing warps the meta whether it's allowed or not, people are just THAT affected by a card sometimes
The reason pure Dragonmaid works in the ocg is probably cuz of the mid range decks being meta. Compare to all the other mid range decks, Dragonmaid out advantage them all quickly and easily.
Playing Dragonmaid in early MD formats was a blast, the deck can easily snowball into a ridiculous advantage, but it has a very weak turn 1 setup, so the big fuck off combo decks that are common in the TCG can easily overwhelm it before it has a chance to start snowballing.
Actually, it was never meta. It just had alot of people playing it and topping LOCALS with it. Most ocg reports people see are from locals and dont actually give a good view on what was meta. Like dragonmaid of heatsoul turbo being locals legends but not remotely meta.
@@haxmode6935a CS and duelist cup is counted as competitive, why Adachi cs 2019 Razor burn won ps5 then?

I feel like certain decks stick around in the OCG more so because of the cult following , rather than being the actual best deck in the room (Dragon Maid, Hero, etc.)
I mean Hero kinda can achieve something

As opposed to the TCG where no decks have cult following?
in general you want each summon to be more high impact in formats with maxx “c”, this is also why adventure tenyi is crazy in the ocg, each summon means so much, you can make barronne in 2 special summons, dpe in 1 or 3, set up adventure in 1, and you can fit tons of hand traps into adventure tenyi so if you’re in halq format you can very reasonably just do nothing pass and still reliably stop a halq play with your hand traps alone, or just set up smth simple with only 1 or 2 summons thats should be enough to interrupt your opponents plays. whereas something like anything with dangers (e.g. smth like spyral) where it takes ages to get a playable board, stuff that can’t reasonably stop before the combo is done and survive, is just not gonna be as good in a maxx “c” format.
It's part of why I find the OCG more interesting is because Maxx C forces efficiency of plays it often feels like the turns are strong but less time consuming on average
At the very least I’m proud of the fact that the 1.5 weeks that D/D was at full power without Zoo was enough for them to top exactly one event. At least they could be called technically meta for a minute in the TCG.
It was 2 weeks! And they got a top during Zoo before Grass Paleo became popular.
It's one of the unexplored formats i hope gets noticed in the future like Edison. ABC PALEO DDD INFERNOID counter each other really well, while there were Metalfoes piles etc before the coming of Ash, Zoo, and Draco.

Which is wild, considering that Tear shines in almost any deck you put it in

adventure tenyi lacking galaxy tomahawk and olion also definitely hurt it over here
Its Funny how Rikka is the reverse of this in the TCG Rikka is pretty good but any format that has Maxx C Rikka is trash.
A lot of time it's partly because of Maxx C and partly because the OCG scene is much more midrange leaning. Also because the OCG scene tend to have a few decks that a lot of players latches on to more than they should for whatever reason
30 year old Japanese salary men will lay eyes upon a yugioh card and will devote the rest of their life to playing that card and like 7 times out of 10 it's an anime girl variant
They have standard yous mean, they are not harlots like meta slaves.
@@sarthakarora3212more like they have issues and think with their dicks rather than brains
It's also because they have far more tournaments so their stuff evolves so much faster
OCG is more midrange leaning because Maxx C is legal so I don't think they are really two different points. That one card is holding back their metas from becoming as combo dominant as the TCGs meta always is.
Big Bang OTK was a powerful OCG deck that would never work in the TCG because of a ruling difference. Originally in the OCG, Gift of the Mystical Elf was ruled that each 300 LP gained was a separate gain, so if for example there were five monsters on the field you would gain 300 five times instead of gaining 1500 once. This interacted with Fire Princess (Big Bang Girl in the OCG) where if you had multiple Gifts of the Mystical Elf and multiple Fire Princesses you would burn your opponent for enough times to win. But by the time the TCG started coming out in 2002, Gift of the Mystical Elf had already had its ruling changed so that the life points gained are all just a single gain.

My head canon about the Spright vs Tear OCG incident is that we just red pilled the Japanese players into becoming gambling addicts through milling and now they've played Tear consistently for 1.5 years 😂
they are just better players
@@sarthakarora3212 mfw "better players" let Spright become tier 0 despite Tear being near full power at the same time.
@@cynthiacrescent In a format with Maxx "C", POTE Spright is stronger than POTE Tear by a large margin. DABL support for Tear was the game changer there, Spright stopped being Tier 0 when it released.
Remember in the TCG we played Tear mostly with Dangers, sometimes with Scareclaw or Spright. These decks simply die to Maxx "C", they have massive engines and can't fit the Maxx package.
It's not gambling when you fill your entire deck with cards that trigger when milled. And by that logic, all decks use gambling since you draw random hands from a 40-60 card deck. But the gambling canard is from people coping after being beaten by Tear.

I think Dragoon just came out at a bad time here in TCG. It dropped right at the beginning of the covid quarantines and there was no tournaments.
I love my Dracoslayers. It's complicated enough to make me think of lines before I make them and it can combo off very well. Pendulum decks are some of the most fun decks I have ever played and it is my favorite mechanic. I have my Dracoslayers and an Endymion build
Hieratic was crazy in the OCG on release but failed to really show up in TCG due to the difference in cardpool. One of them being Gustav max not existing till after REDMD was put to 1 in a banlist
Dragonmaids to me is entirely unplayable without maxx "C".
Like thats the night and day difference.
It gives you so many cards to play with you will never get without it. And it NEEDS those cards.
And Dragonmaids don't really care THAT much about it getting dropped against them.
They really need the draw power badly.
no they just liked the deck. even with maxx c that deck is just bad.
You just describe any deck uh
Nah, its because Dragonmaid needs multiple turns to snowball into massive advantage with its own engine, but it has a very weak turn 1 setup, so it needs Maxx C to survive that turn 1.
You are aware that maxx c resolves like 2 times every 10

I'm honestly convinced that Japanese players just really love Phantom Knights. We all joke about Phantom Knight players overhyping the deck "it'll be meta this format!" but I think maybe 80% of Phantom Knight mains live in Japan. I don't think Rescue Ace will be as tier 1 as it was in the OCG, but I don't think its unplayable/do not take to YCS level bad, it has a pretty decent Kashtira matchup and its Purrely matchup is also pretty good. Other way around would be interesting. Drytron was pretty weak before xyz, Adamancipator were useless untill SHS got new support.
Part of dragoon’s dominance was lack of counters. They didn’t have dark ruler no more and droplet and triple tactics talent didn’t come out until a few months later.

There have been formats in the TCG where Zefra has been pretty good even before we got Denglong back but now that we have it back there is literally no excuse to not play the deck. I really think people just don't know about it.

What you keep missing in every OCG-TCG video is not just that Maxx "C" is legal, but Ash is run at x3 alongside it
Ash is not a turn stopper or even main deck staple in the TCG because you can extend past it.
You cannot beat Maxx "C" by extending, meaning Ash, and by extension omni negates like Baronne and Dragoon, are a lot stronger.
Decks that are successful in the OCG need to navigate through both cards
The rose dragon adventure deck... I played it myself. It's surprisingly inconsistent in its end boards. Half the hands end you on 4 interruptions while playing through handtraps and the other half you just lose to one hand trap with 2 interuptions at best. I really didn't like playing it. If you didn't draw red rose it wasn't fun. Strictly worse than pure Swordsoul imo.

Vaylantz is a good example. That deck had a lot of representation in the ocg, but just couldn't cut the mustard here
So...does Skill Drain work with Dragonmaids?
Speak for yourself, my mind has been awakened to the greatness that is zefra since it came out... now if only I could win a game in the tcg with it
my conspiracy theory is that dragon maid wasn't even good in the ocg, it's just that it was so insanely popular over there that a critical mass of players ended up playing it for fun, so much so that it managed to sneak into top cuts consistently just off sheer numbers
Surprised no one mentions magical musket, I remember those cards being hyped as the best thing that could ever be put on cardboard only for them to do absolutely nothing
Still crazy on how format warping Maxx C is but yeah..I think everyone is no stranger on how different the OCG and TCG formats can actually be.
It literally informs all aspects of deck design without it players can go for the longest most drawn out combos imaginable with limited repercussions with it players are forced to build for hyper efficient impactful combos with as little fat as possible

It was actually more so that they found out Synchro Tear was playable, which runs the Ishizus, and with how much Tri-Brigade needs the GY, it wasn't particularly a great match up for one of the top decks at the time, it still saw play just not as much, and later down the line Elf was banned and Blue was limited which effectively made it just Old Tri-Brigade that is a bit more consistent that's about it. The deck is like the 3rd best deck in Master duel right now or something.
