    Spasticity,rigidity,dystonia..three types of hypertonia
    Spasticity/resistance in one direction and is velocity dependant+hyperreflexia+may be clonus ,occur in /stroke,cerebral palsey,brain injury
    Dystonia//there is abnormal posture and twisting repetitive movements sometimes tremor,occur in/head injury ,cerebral palsey or isolated problem
    Rigidity//not velocity dependant occur in both directions even with slow movement ,can occur in Parkinson disease.
    From video,thank u very informative

    Hi,what type of thing is this - muscles move,push,squeeze,pull,throbbe at the same time,starting with the injury site - back of head, and goes all over body,absolute inability to relax muscles,any massage or exercises make it worse,body twitch more. Trying to relax increases everything,feels like some force inside affecting constantly. Have to squeeze all muscles tightly constantly to get some relief for a second. Tensing them is better,no ability to relax at all,because symptoms intensify.

    Hey, for 5 years i have been going through few second attacks that happen every time i move a part of my body. The current state of when my attacks occur is that when i move my arm or my leg suddenly or react to a door bell or try cross the road or stand up from sitting position quickly one side of my body gets stiff and goes in a crawling position. It has come to a point that my jaws also goes in a crawling position. I am a confident person but these attacks make me less sociable with people. Please help.

    Hi I love your video. It is so informative ❤️
    I have a question to you Maam. Hope you will notice me. I dont know what type of syndrome I have but everytime I contract my muscles it become resistive for a moment and I cant bend it back again so easily to normal position when I tried to force to because my muscle will retain in contraction state. But when I just ignore and dont use force. My muscles will turn to relax slowly. It is just a hindrance in my everyday movements especially when I play sports game. What treatment should I do?

A video called "Stretching legs with Rapunzel" shows some basic stretches. A couple more videos that might help are: Does exercise help after a brain injury?, Treating spasticity in cerebral palsy, Treating spasticity in stroke. A physical therapist could probably give you some specific suggestions.

    Hi,
    I was on diazepam for upper body tightness that happened after spinal disc herniation at base of spine and disc broke off and got into spinal canal requiring surgery.
    After surgery big jolt in mid back and whole upper back went solid and head heavy etc.
    Have been on diazepam since week after surgery in 2001.
    Now in severe Benzodiazepine withdrawal and sensitised nervous system. Can’t take any meds or supplements.
    All muscles in back, buttocks, neck, shoulders, face, legs, abs, sides are extremely hard and tight.
    As get lower on dose again they get rigid.
    Thos is constant even when lying down.
    No position is bearable.
    Back muscles so contracted forcing sound to arch up.
    Lying on side hips and shoulders etc are so tight too painful etc.
    If muscles don’t release at all in any position is that rigidity?
    Any ideas what I can do?
    Stretches, massage, osteopathy, myofascial release etc do not help.
    ThankS

      Neuro has tried baclofen, Tizanidine, Topirimate, Dantrolene.etc etc..
      Even magnesium & Vit D etc cause severe reaction due to nervous system sensitisation.
      Can’t do any exercises, can hardly stand up and lying down is more and more unbearable as taper lower but now paradoxical to Benzos.
      Is there anyway to address the sensitisation?

In her mri report it was mentioned that she has delayed myelination andwhite matter signal abnormality in periventicular brain paranchyma. We we visited neurologist he said no need to worry about she Will recover soon. He also said that she has spastic legs and exaggerated knee reflux. that's why she has walking difficulty. He advised us to use baby walker and my daughter walks very well in walker she also stands up by pulling up objects. What do u suggest for my daughter. Doctor also gave us baclin tablets ceremin syrup and prosense syrup. Overall my daughter is active and healthy. Can rigidity and spasticity be caused by chronic or extreme stress/anxiety? When I get stressed/anxious my fingers joints start to tighten in like a claw, (I can still fully extend but joints are sore),
    The same as my toes and foot, mainly my right foot…like I can feel the rigidity in my toes, especially big toe knuckle and just behind the ball of my foot…
    When my stress/ anxiety is alleviated, it goes away.
    ???

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  2 года назад

      Stress and anxiety can cause tight muscles. Also, some people can get dystonia when they hyperventilate. But you need to have a neurologic disorder to have true spasticity or rigidity.

    Hypertonia is increase in muscle tone. Does muscle tone equal to muscle size? Does hypertonia muscle bigger ,smaller or just look normal?

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  4 года назад

      Muscle tone does not mean bigger muscles. I have seen people with spasticity with big, small and medium sized muscles. Interestingly, I have seen people with severe spasticity with very small muscles. You would think that constant contraction from spasticity would cause muscles to be bigger.

  • @AaronB99999
    @AaronB99999 11 месяцев назад

    Would spasticity ever increase over a long period of time? My stroke was almost two years ago. In recent months, my affected leg has significantly stiffened and continues to worsen. My rehab doc apparently hasn’t seen this and is continuing with Botox, which hasn’t helped much. It’s not so much velocity dependent as it is just stiff all the time.

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  11 месяцев назад +1

      It sometimes increases over time. But more commonly, it becomes more contracted over time. There is another video on this channel: Is it spasticity or contracture. It sounds like this could be the case with you. If the tendon is really shortened, orthopedic surgery may be beneficial.
      Also, sometimes people can develop an immunity to Botox and one of the different toxins may work better: Dysport or Xeomin.

      The most important thing is how she is developing. If her motor skills are developing well, that is a good sign. Sometimes physiotherapists are better than doctors at picking up subtle differences in resistance or tone. If you are still concerned, an hour with a physiotherapist might help sort it out.
