    I could care less about jumping, (except for the old delayed axels, my favorite that will never happen) I love these footwork moves, rockers, choctaws, mohawks twizzles etc. All I really want to do is dance across the ice with music from my cell phone.

    Great explanation! As an adult ice dancer, I love watching people do choctaws - I think they look very elegant! So far the only one I can do is the "fake" choctaw: the BI-FO open choctaw done for spin entries or in power three-turns.

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! Glad you liked the video! 😂 The fake choctaw😂 Choctaws at great when you get the hang of them and are far more comfortable to do than some other turns like forward outside rocker.

    Am I correct if I say :
    - 3 turn : same foot, change of edge
    - mohawk : change of foot same edge
    - choctaw : change of foot, change of edge
    What is a rocker counter then?

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 года назад +22

      Yes you are 100% correct.
      Rocker: same foot, same edge, turn the same way you would if you were doing a 3 turn.
      Counter rocker: same foot, same edge, turn the OPPOSITE way you would turn if you were doing a 3 turn.
      Bracket: same foot, change of edge, turn the OPPOSITE way you would if you were doing a 3 turn.

      @@IceCoachOnline Will do! I've given it a little try today in a short free moment. Tried the first one. I understood what I'm trying to do. What I can't do at all yet is switching travel direction. I can't turn my feet out enough and weight distribution completely fails me. I'm yet to figure out where balance goes. The moment I turn backwards I land on my backwards inside edge and can't get myself to lean the other way for the life of me 😂. I'm sure it's one of these things that are easy once your body has figured out where to be at what point.
      That said, I can't do rockers either. My body says "Where do you think you're going? We're staying on our cycle, foolish woman!" 😂

    The rumba choctaws are actually really hard, I had a hell of a time learning them. My coach had to hold my front arm and pull me left and right, took a few days to get it. Now I can do them sort of ok, but I lose speed completely after just 2 forward/backward choctaws, so it's still a long ways to go!

    Hi Lloyd, great video!!!!!!! would you be able to do another of the common competition ones, but in more detail, with of close ups and slow-mo of the edge change/foot placement and the body lean with the correct arm position...(don’t want much do I 😉). I’ve just started learning the back outside.

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 года назад +3

      Thanks! Glad to hear you liked it. This is something I have started filming actually! I also want to include what common mistakes look like. For example I would have a slow motion shot of it performed correctly, then another with an incorrect edge in the Choctaw, which results in the skater losing points on their footworks during competition.

    I also wonder how arms and shoulders should actually help in this turn? It seems you don't need them because professionals don't really need?
    I usually have them aching after training as I really need them to keep the balance 🙈

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 года назад +1

      As long as your upper body (torso specifically) is doing what it is supposed to do, you can wave your arms around without it affecting the turn (within reason). That is how high level skaters manage to do all sorts of arm movements without messing up their footwork.
      You arms will ache less as they get stronger! Mine used to ache too 😞🙂

  • @biari8599
    @biari8599 4 года назад

    What about inverted choctaws, I've noticed those in several single's programs over the past few seasons, specifically BI-FO and BO-FI.
    I think they can look really cool and add some character, because they're not as common.
    But I'm never sure how they're supposed to be executed, without doing too much of a jump/loosing contact with the ice i.e. what's still acceptable.
    Also, I wouldn't want anyone to think I just messed up a BI rocker or BO counter :( but that's inevitable I'm afraid, with steps/turns that are unusual.

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 года назад +1

      I made this video around 2013 and unfortunately I missed a few choctaws that I now feel should have been included! What I'll be doing is adding creating another video in the future that includes the ones I missed out, such as your examples above.
      Normally any kind of jump or hop from one foot to the other results in the turn not counting as a clean turn (in ISU competitions). You should aim to step from one foot to the other as smoothly as possible!

  • @kseniia_
    @kseniia_ 4 года назад +1

    I didn't get if the difference between first 2 choctaws is only in 25 cm? Or there is different body positioning already? 🥺

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 года назад +2

      The only difference between the first two is the distance between the feet. I included them both since they are featured in different ice dance compulsory dances.
      The wider stepping Choctaw is a fair bit harder to do.

    Somewhere at 4:17 the sound goes off as if you were swearing 😛
    I'm struggling with choctaw at the moment I change the foot - it turns to be more like an awkward jump. I guess if a press more on inner edge, it should work better? Then i am close to fall down 😫 and can't stop tightening my feet in boots, does everyone make this effort? Next day my feet ache as if I spent the whole day on high heels 🙄
    And I wonder

    • @IceCoachOnline

      Are you jumping from one foot to the other during the Choctaw? Which one are you trying to do?

    • @kseniia_
      @kseniia_ 4 года назад +1

      @@IceCoachOnline I do all typical ones, forward and backward, and it feels like a jump because of unsustainable position I guess... no problems with forward crossrolls but the same awkward foot change in backward crossrolls

    • @IceCoachOnline
      @IceCoachOnline  4 года назад +1

      @@kseniia_ sometimes people don't take enough care with placing the foot down gently, so they end up plodding it down heavy. Try to use your knee action to step down gently during the Choctaw.
