This interview highlights the importance of theological discussions and script feedback in ensuring authenticity and plausibility. The heart of "The Chosen" is to encourage viewers to read the Gospels with a proper sense of imagination and rediscover the humanity of Jesus. "The Chosen" is a work of art and not a replacement for the Bible, but church leaders can use the cultural moment created by "The Chosen" to engage people with the gospel.

I've known Jesus all my life. I'm very familiar with the Gospels (as well as the rest of the Bible). I love how The Chosen gives cultural context to those events, and makes connections to the Old Testament. I've found myself regarding some things in a brighter light. Is it necessary for my salvation? No. But does it give me a greater appreciation and understanding? Absolutely!

I agree that the writers are authentic to Scripture. I love seeing the apostles as 3 dimensional, not 1 or 2;dimensional.

I got to know Jesus in a personal, relatable way before The Chosen. I still seek Him that way in the Bible. While I enjoy the show and the Round table discussions, it only scratches the surface of the True, Living Savior.

I’ve been watching the round tables since the beginning. Love them! I talk about them in my Theology class all the time. But it’s hard to listen to an interview when the interviewer is interrupting so often.

I’m glad for this chance to “meet” one of the advisors. I would like to know if he ever raised a theological objection that was rejected. (I have not yet seen this whole interview.)
I was troubled by the scenes where Jesus needs to rehearse the Sermon on the Mount and even gets help from Matthew. He tells Mary He may mess it up. How does this jive with John 12:49 where the real Jesus says He only speaks the words the Father gives Him?
My overall impression of The Chosen is that the scriptwriters are so intent on making Jesus relatable that they diminish His diety. In the incarnation, He didn’t lay aside His diety-only the glory and privilege.
Previous movies that took license with the gospels fell into the ditch on the other side making Jesus so other worldly that He wasn’t approachable at all.
The Chosen has some very moving scenes that will live in my memory for years. They often capture the flavor of the time and place. I wish there was as much care given to scriptural truth which both the Catholic and Evangelical advisors could agree on.
We’re told to watch with discernment but any red flags that are brought up seem to elicit the same talking point: “this is not the Bible.“
    Thanks for this interview.

The best way to answer complaints is to remind people that the Four Gospels each tell a different story. are not biographies but theological discourses based on memories of Jesus and scenes ion his life. Also that people need to remember that in the end “The Chosen” is a work of fiction like the 1950s movie “The Robe”.

Jesus did what all teachers do. They ask their students questions in order to find out how much the student understands about the lesson. Then, the teacher can correct any misunderstandings. Matthew was autistic and needed extra help from Jesus. The Chosen is about people who are learning how to live the Christian life. It illustrates Christianity. As a man, Jesus had to ask the Father about everything--even how to express the Sermon on the Mount. When Jesus told his Mother he might "mess up," he was not worried. But he knew his Mother was worried, so he eased her apprehension by expressing "worry" in a lighthearted way. It worked because he assured her that the sermon was very good. The Bible from Genesis onward is about man and his problems. Every known sin is described and redemption is revealed. In that sense, The Chosen is true...because it portrays mankind as the Bible describes him. The deity is revealed in many ways --by the titles of God Jesus uses for himself, miracles, and finally by the resurrection.

One thing they have out of order in season 4 is that the blind man that Jesus heals as recorded in the Book of John was in Jerusalem and Jesus tells him to go wash his face in the pool of Siloam but in the chosen season 4 it takes place in Capernaum and Jesus tells him to wash his face in a bucket of water that one of the disciples have brought over.

The episode doesn’t mention Jesus’ brothers. The first thing to understand is that the term brother (Gk. adelphos) has a broader meaning than uterine brothers. It can mean a biological brother, but it can also mean an extended relative, or even a spiritual brother. James and Joseph (also called Joses), who are called Jesus’ “brothers” (Mark 6:3) are indeed the children of Mary-Just not Mary, the mother of Jesus.
After St. Matthew’s account of the crucifixion and death of Jesus, he writes:
“There were also many women there, looking on from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him; among who were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.” (Matt. 27:56; see also Mark 15:40).

I appreciate your comment about the danger of the influence to the perceptions of Jesus and the apostles. I do serious Bible studies, I don't count on a TV show to shape my understanding of the Bible and God/Jesus and his apostles. My concern after watching season 4 is less about theology, more about the poor quality of the storyline, compared to the first 3 seasons. It feels the TV series becomes more and more forgettable. The first season is still my favorite. I've watched it at least 3 times. The 2nd season was pretty good too. Season 3 was OK but I was not able to make myself watch it again. The first 3 episodes of season 4 are by far the worst. A lot of focus on emotions, not enough on how to tell a story well. Hope it gets better in the rest of episodes of season 4.

I don't follow your logic. The first season, when they were just getting started was on the lighter side. They were very young and for all practically purposes simply human. Each succeeding season, the storylines are much deeper, and they are each growing in faith - like we do, but we're just average people. Season 4 is the darkest yet. The apostles are experiencing a wide range of emotions as they suffer losses or the first major problem with rocks thrown at them for example and begin to truly understand there is a mission. If you want the bible portrayed as the bible, this is not it. Just read your bible, and be content! This is a program meant to highlight the humanness of Jesus and the apostles and how the apostles move from their innocence to their apostle stature. We unfortunately had forgotten they were human first and then became holy men of God. Put another way, we are watching their conversion experiences as we know what's coming with Jesus. Will we have a conversion experience or hide our heads in the sands of this is what has to be because it's what I'm used to?

I agree with all you said. My comment was about the storytelling which I think is not as good as the first couple of seasons. In another word, I am disappointed by the quality of these 3 episodes, nothing to do with how Jesus and his followers were portrayed. The last scene (Ramah got killed) felt forced. (even though I had no problem that she died and in fact I was expecting it bc there was hint of it in the first 3 episode. Iwhen Ramah and Thomas asked Jesus' blessing for their marriage, Jesus looked sad then responded "later"). The 10-minute dance scene felt unnecessary. All that said, I am still a consistent supporter of the Chosen. Just hope they do better not fall flat.

Why is this show even being done??? To "popularize"... who? Jesus? His apostles? The women (great make up btw). By now it is quite clear that it is not biblical. It actually distorts scripture. Yes, so did the old Jesus movies of 50 years ago... but those directors didn't ask folks to fund up front... they were for profit entertainment. The chosen wants it both ways and is making a lot of money. Which is fine but can we please stop the pretense?

    • @patriciabrown4487
      @patriciabrown4487 4 месяца назад +2

Of course it’s making money. It is not a non-profit organization. Actors, crew, etc etc all have to be paid, like any other show.
Have you watched the show? The miracles portrayed are spot on with the dialogue in the Gospels.

    • @poohwol10

It’s being made in order to introduce as many people as possible to Jesus. At the very least, it is driving people to read the Bible for themselves & that is the bestest thing ever! Every individual is going to “get” something different from the Holy Bible, too, so it would be dishonest to think we will all agree with the show’s writers on every aspect of The Chosen. It is, however, worth entertaining the concepts being postulated, I think. If you strongly object to the show, don’t watch it. That’s your prerogative, but allow those of us who are blessed & impacted by it to b blessed& impacted by it…please.

Well that tells me that I would never advise anyone to go to Talbot theological seminary whatever it's called. I've seen enough leaven added to this Series that I would not recommend it for anybody to watch. I guess this so-called professor and Dean are OK with adding things The series that could never Interpreted from the Scriptures. James being a crippled. Or Matthew suffering from autism. Here's my favorite when Jesus tells James and John not To strike back at the Samaritan who are mocking them. He tells him well my message is getting out there Without any miracles. And then of course the one where Jesus is asking Matthew what he thinks of his sermon on the mount. Are you kidding me Mr. Hoffman and Mr. Stetzler!

He isn’t a so-called professor, he IS a professor. You can’t add leaven to a show! Matthew is not suffering. One doesn’t “suffer” from autism. He has Aspergers syndrome which is a very mild form on the spectrum. The Chosen is a wonderful stepping stone to get non believers and back slidden believers to search out the Scriptures. Dallas has said Many Times that this is a story about Jesus and his disciples with many plausible dialogues along the way, and that we should READ OUR BIBLES, PEOPLE for Biblical truths.

    • @lucillejerome5511

Too bad you found it necessary to disrespect the best depiction of those early Christian times with Jesus and the apostles portrayed realistically. None of the lines associated with the bible have been tampered with, and Dallas and others have said repeatedly that this is a show. It is not a replacement for the bible for goodness sake! You also decided to insult the guest as a 'so-called professor', so I ask what are your credentials? When do you think Matthew began noting the phenomenon of Jesus and writing notes for what would become one of the gospels? You don't think for even a moment that Jesus had personal conversations with any of the apostles? Just saying that you overstepped in an example of false pride, but then again you have a right to your opinion as off base as it is.
