Caridina Shrimp require a specialized set up and very specific parameters. In this video, I try my hand at setting up my very first caridina tank using amazonia substrate, a large piece of driftwood and a bunch of crypt wendtii I pulled from other tanks. Caridina require very soft water with a pH under 7, TDS between 130-160ppm and 0 KH in the water. Because of this it is nearly essential to have a reverse osmosis unit and shrimp minerals to reach the proper water parameters.
How did I do for my first try? More to come soon!

Rock on, so excited for you !!! Congrats on 50K !
thank you! hoping they'll help the channel, and my wallet haha
Nice! I recently started my first Caridina tank and I used the same soil and same remineralizer! I have blue bolts in there currently. I couldn’t get the PH under 6 so I had to add a bag of Fluval Peat Moss in the tank and it got the PH down more so my little blue bolts are doing well. They’re very small not breeding age yet but hopefully in a few months they will start to breed!
I don't think it HAS to be below 6, but that will help the soil last longer. Mine is 6.5 and I'm not too worried right now.
@@BobMossNanoTanks no no doesn’t HAVE to be under 6. From what I’ve heard just from other people who have a lot of experience with Caridina they’ve said they have better results with it under 6. Like better breeding, skrimps are more active etc. so I added some peat moss and last I check my PH it was 5.8 so right under 6.
So epic and superb :) I enjoyed it so very much my dear friend! :)
thank you so much :)
Did you just buy yourself ro unit? Wow that’s insane you finally did it! Congrats on the first caridina tank!
I got it a little while back, took me awhile to actually install it but it's been running for about 3 weeks now.
congrats on 50k
Welcome to the meme team!
Dont get discouraged if you think active substrate is required. It really just depends on your water parameters. My water stays around 6.4 - 6.6 ph so I am able to use inert substrate and have several batches of baby Caridina. OEBT, BB, Pandas and CRS all doing great! Can't wait to see Bob's first Caridina shrimp though!!
Wouldn't it be prone to pH swings with nothing to buffer it? In an inert substrate the KH acts as a pH buffer but in the active set ups with 0KH, the soil is what buffers the pH and keeps things stable. That's my only concern.
I find the ph to be the same day/night but I use well water and it does have kh 1 and very low tds 12. Maybe that's why it works in my case. I also do weekly water changes and use Gh+ like you recommended to around 120-130 tds.
My concern with active substrate is that the water differs at water changes and I would rather it be as close as possible. Thanks for your videos, I'm just learning and having fun!
@@gosdin27 That's what the minerals and RO water are for though. You can get your new water to match the tank parameters exactly and limit shock.
Thank you for the support!
congrats on 50k .
dream team
Missing the most important plant in a Caridina tank though, and thats Moss, its absolutely essential for baby shrimp to hide in and gives a huge surface area for biofilm to grow on.
I actually realized this and added some about a week after filming, just behind the wood so it doesnt clutter the scape
So other words you made a 20 gallon ramshorns snail 🐌
Tank 😂
Nice
Uh, for now ya haha. gimme 4 more weeks
You be over populated with them
But You already Khow this
For i was funning you
Keep your Shrimp hand strong 😂
@@baronandbaronessvonwolf4618 I have thousands already, what's a few hundred more?
Certainly no need for a ammonia source at start , Amazonia leeches loads of ammonia . I never put plants in either until cycled . Looks good and wish you all the best with caridina . Personally I find them easier to keep than neocaridina
Thats true, just a habit of mine. Give something for the snails to eat, creates waste and gets thins going. This is my first caridina, so I'm learning.
I have heard this as well, but I have made the most hardy line of neos on the planet so I dunno if anything can be easier than them lol.
how many gallons was that
This was a 20 gallon set up
👍✌
No moss 😟
I actually added some after I filmed lol
Yes Cause it didnt Seem right
If you was going by Moss as your Sir name on Utube

Keep yourn shrimp hand strong 👊
@@baronandbaronessvonwolf4618 Thank you so much.
I only clean the front glass so I can see inside and I'll squeeze my sponges once a month. Shrimp love dirty tanks lol.
