Hi Sue. I went and got a second opinion. He said normally this break would have been a five week recovery but mine was bad because there was a huge gap in the break. I am now in a normal shoe with orthotics. I went back for an X-ray in October and he said it is closing up and should be totally healed in 8 weeks. That should put me at an 11 month recovery. It was crazy! I normally heal quickly with things like this! Good luck on your recovery!

First and foremost, I really enjoyed the content of this video. Very helpful. My daughter who is freshman in college (d1 soccer player) injured her foot playing in a game earlier this month. Fast forward and 2 doctor visits later she was diagnosed with a non displaced Jones fracture. The schools orthopedic surgeon suggested surgery but another off campus surgeon advised on the conservative approach. My daughter is in a air cast and walks with crutches. Hardly any pain and no swelling or bruising. She’s not sure of what direction to take but she does mention the non surgery option a lot. It’s been about 4 weeks since the injury.

My left foot had a jones fracture on the 5th of October 2023. Nothing was done because I mistakenly thought it was just a sprain until I went for X-ray on the 18th of October 2023. Today the 5th of December 2023 marks exactly 2 months and I’ve healed about 75% with no surgery, plaster, boot or medication whatsoever. I’ve been using the foot since the incident. The first days the pain was unbearable and I’d use the heel to support my leg. The right leg started hurting because of bearing too much weight. 💪🏿

Definitely remember the sound! Tripped in my garage gym, inverted ankle as the sole on my trainer collapsed (it was a running shoe which I never liked or used except for walking in the gym - even used a specific Powerlifting shoe for actual weight training - my bad!). Very loud snap and instant pain.
Currently week 6 in recovery, still in Aircast Short Walker as physio wants total caution. I'm normally a track cyclist, so the advice is ultra-cautious rehab to week 8, x-ray and consultant review, then wean out of Walker. Able to use Walker on a Wattbike with an MTB pedal, back doing squats etc "... as long as you do them in the Walker ... ".
As this useful video is now 5 years old, some interesting advice I gleaned from my wife (pharmacist) and son (AI biochemist). Supplementing with Hydrolyzed Collagen, Vit D, Vit C, NMN, Co-Enzyme Q10, and daily Clear Whey (protein shake). No medical advice given however!

I am a 41 year old female and a cigarette smoker. I fell on my stairs at home on Dec 4th and now have a spiral fracture in the 5th metatarsal. The bone fell back into place and did not need initial surgery. I was placed in a boot and told I could walk, lift children at the daycare I work at and continue with other regular activities. The boot did not help with pain, but a nurse said it wouldn't, so I assumed all the pain I had associated with walking in the boot is normal and maybe so, again idk. The break is refusing to heal. At 10 weeks a CT scan was done, still no healing. I have now been put on non weight bearing for two weeks to see if it makes a difference. I was told to stop smoking and led to believe that smoking is they only cause for nonunion thus far (I don't disagree smoking is part of the problem, but THE only problem? Idk about that...) I was never told that these fractures are known for having a hard time healing. I can't understand why I wasn't asked to be non weight bearing in the beginning vs now after 10 weeks. I feel like if the dr had questioned my home life situation, realizing that the only rest the foot was getting was when I was sleeping, maybe it would have been a different story. I can almost bet that when I return for xrays in the beginning of March, at 13 weeks post break, it wont be healed and I will be told surgery is required. Its frustrating to say the least and I'm soooo over it already, dang!

Avulsion of the 5th metatarsal 2 days before my vacation overseas. Man it sucks and it pretty depressing. I've never broken a bone before this one and i got it running and landing wrong/shoe bending inwards. Doc told me i could still go and walking on it wouldn't make it worst, granted if i could deal with the pain, but i cancelled. I didnt want to trust me, i planned this trip 3-4 months ago, but i figured going and walking around on it fractures would delay recovery, possibly make it worst, dealing with pain, long term complications, and probably messing up the bone growth. I don't wanna go on a vacation on crutches, a boot maybe, but i hate this. Its been 2 days and im scared to even shower smh.

@@hollylyrics7792 I am actually walking and running pain free now, but my left foot (the fractured one) is not the same and this is a year and a half later. It swells a bit more than my right and on recovery grew back slightly bigger on the fracture area, I can feel my left shoe a little tighter than my right. Using one week at a time, I progressively learned how to walk and strengthen my foot on my own with no therapy and still went on the vacation in week 10/11 I forgot. The first two weeks I was in bed all day (using my vacation time), but even when I went to work....everyday my foot was elevated and iced at least once a day wearing low cut ankle compression socks. Off ebay, I bought and used a bone stimulator everyday (exogen). It was expensive and a little risky, but I didn't care. I used it twice a day until I left for my vacation. I also was taking calcium, vitamin d12, osteo bi flex triple strength and whey protein shakes to aid the recovery. After two weeks I stopped taking pain medicine prescribed so my foot would heal faster, I also didn't want my body to get dependent on the painkillers. Around week 6 i began walking slowly with both crutches still doing my elevation and supplements routine. I took the boot off and was in a flat medical sandle. If I wasnt at work I was in bed. I would also do stretches on my foot and slowly roll it over a smooth foot massage ball to help it as well. The next week i trained myself on one crutch and the week after that I slowly walked with none. A week or two later I did a lot of walking on my vacation, but would take a break every once in a while when the swelling would start up.

My doc saw a bone chip around the base of my fifth toe but nothing else. Nothing on the MRI. I was in a soft cast for a week and then a boot for six weeks. 1 1/2 weeks later I started experiencing excruciating pain and a red bump was at the base of the fifth toe. Another x ray and still nothing. My doctor is baffled and now I'm once again in a soft cast and basically bed rest because walking is so painful. He tried a steroid shot but the relief only lasted 5 minutes.

My foot was pulled under a rotating shaft so that the shaft was over the top of my foot trying to wrap my foot around it. A long pin that holds a coupler together started to dig into the top of my foot putting pressure down the center of my foot. Then I felt a bunch of pops on top of my foot and felt like something was tearing in the arch of my foot. A cat scan revealed 4 fractures 2 in the two long bones 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones and 1 diamond shaped bone above the big toe short bone above 4th toe. Now I need an mri yo check ligaments. I hope I don't need surgery.

I am 61 and have RLS so i move my feet a lot at night to get relief. Maybe that caused the 5th metatarsal fracture. A lot of pain. Should i see a podiatrist or just get a boot online? Full boot or half?

Thanks, Dr. Geier. I am a 30 yo male athlete who had a very small fracture of the base of my 5th metatarsal after an inversion of my ankle in basketball. The ortho also said there was a slip of the plantar fascia. I was placed in a back slab plaster cast for 4 weeks (got a DVT, actually) and then was told to buy solid soled shoes. I was somewhat non adherent with the shoes bc I wore flip flops at times, and may have got into running again too soon. It has been almost a year since the injury and there is still soreness in the area under the foot day after I run, or in the AM about 4/10. If you were to squeeze my foot on either side it would be very painfu as welll. I also have achilles pain at the insertion of that foot (which is steadily improving). Is my pain bone or tendon? Can you recommend management techniques to get my foot 100%? I do AM ankle movements and eccentric calf stretches and these seem to be helping, but wasn't sure If there was anything else you might be able to recommend to get my foot all the way back. Thanks.

Hi Dr. David Geier please help I have question about hamstring acl graft, will my harvested tendons regenerate?
Just had a surgery a week ago, decided to have a hamstring autograft because that's the method my surgeon was
most comfortable with. I was an excellent sprinter and a passionate runner, so I am worried the harvested
hamstring might drastically affect my speed and running? The surgeon had to harvest two hamstring tendons
for the graft because my tendons were quite thin he said. I am 22 years old.

Dr. Geier, I have tenderness at the base of the 5th metatarsal that only hurts when I walk barefoot on hard surfaces like concrete or a tile floor. I'm 69 and have gone barefoot nearly all my life, including jogging barefoot. This only cropped up a few months ago. It almost feels like a bone spur on the lateral side of the base of the 5th metatarsal. It does not bother me when I walk on soft ground or when I wear shoes. Does that sound like a hairline fracture? In a way it's a good development because it's forcing me to walk more on the inside of my foot when barefoot, whereas I've walked too much on the outside of my foot, all my life. But I'm interested in your opinion on whether this may be a fracture. Thanks, and great video!

I have a Jones Fracture. Im 52 years old and the break happened March 2018 and surgery in April. How common is it for the screw to become painful? It has a burning type pain to it? Is removing the screw the only option?

    • @dunch88

Renee Hoffman I thought I was the only one going crazy, I just had mine done. I'm 44 and had it done 10-19-2018 I'm finally out of the boot and it still hurts. I can pinch push even tap the surgical point and it's fine. However when walking or even laying I'm getting this burning, sore feeling.
Although I'm 6 weeks into it my doctor seems to think I'm being a wimp . I guess I'll wait and see where I'm at in twelve weeks
