Years ago when Carla Emery was still living, I was part of a team that helped her edit and revise her 10th edition of The Encyclopedia of Country Living and while this project took over a year, all of the information was updated and all recipes tested and replaced if needed. She and her husband Don came here to MT, stayed with us and did a weekend seminar in our small town. Carla was a very nice lady and very laid back and very willing to share what she'd learned and was open to new information. The 10th edition was delayed after her death, some sort of legal issues between her family and publisher( I believe) Her book, is my go to first and foremost for most everything. Thank you for your review, it's always so discouraging when you spend good money and are disappointed in the product.

I so appreciate this review, Heidi! I agree with you: there's something shady going on, and I absolutely HATE the websites you are talking about; those with all the info SCREAMING at you and the one you have to keep scrolling through to get to the bottom to see the price. As soon as I see a page like that, my interest in the product is gone and I close it. I just don't trust those. A good product doesn't need an elaborate sales pitch, or a web page, or website to sell. I've added the Encyclopedia of Country Living to my wish list, thank you for the recommendation.

Good work Heidi! I am an editor and publisher, and I feel aggravated about the books having different articles as well as ending abruptly and costly so much. They should at least have an alphabetical index at the back. I suspect the publisher is printing Lost Ways out on a laser printer or in some way that allows for moving articles around that would not be possible if printed with real ink on a huge press. Seems unprofessional. Thank you so much for doing all this work! And for the recommendation for the Country book instead!

My biggest problem with The Lost Ways book was that there wasn't much detail, everything was way too generalized. It tells you what you need to do, but not how to do it. Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living is also my "go to" book for anything and everything I need to know. It covers almost everything needed to know in great detail and everything written is a "tried and true" method.

I totally agree, Heidi! I bought the No Grid Survival Projects book after seeing the infomercial on YT mult times. I was planning on buying the Lost Ways book next, which I had also seen pop up often. I became very suspicious after the first book cost so much plus shipping and handling AND it took a while to get here. I went to Amazon & looked up both books & found them with a variety of prices & name variations. The one thing that was constant was that although the people in the infomercials claimed to be the authors, Claude Davis’ name was on every one. As for the herbs I have so many books already & knowledge I’m returning to after being on the fringe for several years. Plus the OLD Foxfire books of the early ‘70s. I’ll definitely get the Country Living book and be done with it! Thanks for drawing my attention to it.

It has gone through many evolutions over the years as Carla added more and more new information. I read one of the earlier versions almost cover to cover about 40 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for the review Heidi, I have thought about ordering this book but the more I think about it I think I will stick with my FoxFire books . Every thing and more is in the Fox Fire books. If you haven't read them yet I highly recommend you do , they are a great source of information for homesteaders. Many Blessings !

Forever I will be looking for The Lost Ways first edition in old book collections. I have been buying any of these types of books that I see at garage sales. I have already found some very helpful ones. The Amish store has so many but the problem is once they sell it they very seldom replace it. Making it difficult to save up to buy!

Glad you made a review because I've been getting a lot of ads for the book and felt something didn't seem right.

Country Living book was the first book I purchased when I started my journey to a simpler life a decade ago. Now, I own two different editions of Country Living. I also given a copy to a good friend. I highly recommend this book.

The best herb book I ever found was “the Herbalist” by Meyer books.
I got my copy from Indiana Botanic Gardens.
I bought a second copy on eBay three years ago. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT

Thank you so much for this !!!
I have been tempted to buy this but there are so many different advertisements with different people claiming to be the author and when “trying” to research it, I end up like you, back to the advertisement 🤷🏼‍♀️
The hyped up and deceptive adds have kept me from purchasing !
With your recommendation I now know which book to buy, I truly trust your honest opinion....THANK YOU !!
    Blessings

Thanks for this review, kept seeing ads and videos and was curious if I was right about it just being overpriced and not worth it compared to others.
