in the Original animation Ultra Magnus was Drawn & Quartered on the junk planet. the Animators deemed this too volent and changed the Animation after the scene was already Finished. they had to Create NEW overlay Animation to correct this.
They did not do that 🙄 such a figure didn't appear till was the first Nemesis Prime character was introduced in the Transformers Car Robots Anime, he was an since has been physically identical Optimus but painted black and grey, letting them sell the same toy as two characters. But making more characters by recoloring existing toys is a old, old toy company trick. Prime was brought back as soon as possible in the show and toy line because Hasbro had no idea what impact his death would have. They really didn't get those of us as kids really connected the such a positive make role model, it didn't matter he was a robot!
I always thought Blurrs fast talking in this movie was done with editing, but no his voice actor can actually talk that fast. He even holds the record for most words said. 80s kids remember him as the Micro Machines guy. He even voiced as Blurr again in the Transformers Animated series.
John Maschitta actually used to be an auctioneer before he became the Micromachines guy. He's in the Guiness book of world records for being the fastest speaker.
badmouth the movie okay because over 30 years later, things change. But The Touch, who wants to FIGHT ANYONE who wouldn't enjoy it??? Listened to it twice since Yesterday.
Unicron was voiced by Orson Welles, and I love that so much. He was in damn near everything for a while in the 20th Century. But most people know him from _Citizen Kane._ Same goes for Galvatron voiced by Leonard Nimoy, His first day of recording, he showed up an hour early to warm up by doing vocal scales in the men's room.
Orson Welles also the narration in Micheal Jackson’s Thriller Music Video, and he also narrated the Chuck Jones animated adaptation of Ricky-Tiki-Tavi.
@DanGaningFan: As a matter of fact, this was the final film that Orson Welles was involved in before he'd died Btw, you neglected to mention that Leonard Nimoy voiced Galvatron
The movie might have been a failure when it came out but nowadays, it is well remembered The reason why many characters were killed off was because their toys were discontinued, having characters dying was something that never happened in the cartoon (at least in season 1 and 2) Optimus’s death traumatized the kids, a lot of them left the theaters in that scene. At that time Hasbro saw Optimus as a product, they didn’t realized Prime was seen as an icon until this happened, to fix this they got to work on a two parter for the season 3 finale called “The return of Optimus Prime” and this is why now every time he dies he always come back
They learned from that mistake when they did the post production for G.I. Joe the animated movie. Nearly killed off a couple of favorite characters in that movie. Can't wait for him to react to that movie, as well.
I read in another comment essentially stating that at the time, Hasbro only saw the cartoon as an advertisement for the cartoon, and believed that viewers thought the same. They didn't think that the viewers actually cared about the characters in any sort of sincere way, so thought all the kids would care about is seeing all the new toys they could buy without caring about the old ones being retired because they already had those toys.
Six years old in the theatre and cried my freaking eyes out when Optimus Prime died. I don't think people nowadays realize how important Optimus was as hero to kids in the 80s. So popular they had to bring him back in the later seasons of the show and years later the producers said in an interview if they new how popular he was they would've handled things differently in regards to his death.
I watched the 20th Anniversary DVD (I was born in the 90s) and it still hit me emotionally. And in 2021, I watched this film in theaters for its 35th Anniversary. What a way to watch it. Unicron is really imposing and intimidating on the big screen.
The OG Transformers is a classic. Back before we had Michael Bay and explosions, we had animated robots and Stan Bush’s The Touch. Times were simpler back then.
This movie takes place between seasons 2 and 3 of the G1 series (which you ABSOLUTRLY NEED TO WATCH). Many Transformers fans, myself included, have been STARVING for reactions to the G1 cartoon--if you love campy, goofy, Saturday morning cartoon shenanigans involving giant robots, it is the show for you. And yep, this movie was hand-animated by Toei Animation, the same studio that animates DragonBall and One Piece. Also, fun fact: Orson Welles, who is known for Citizen Kane, and his performance in the infamous War Of The Worlds radio drama adaptation, didn't even know what he was auditioning for when he came to do Unicron's voice. Sadly, he would pass away roughly two or three weeks after he finished the recording for Unicron, making this wild af animated film his final performance.
Hey if you've been wanting to hear more reactions, i just finished watching the first 2 seasons of G1 for the first time. I heard that there were transformers going to die in this movie, but I didn't expect it to be so... traumatizing. Like I thought each one was gonna have their "grand sacrifice" but holy shit when i saw brawn, ironhide and ratchet literally just die in the first few minutes. I spent 2 wholesome seasons with these characters and seeing them die that quick was horrifying. I still love it though, im just traumatized lmao
@@donutello_ There were stories of kids being traumatized back the 80s, especially over Optimus Prime's death. And the primary reason for all the death? Hasbro was discontinuing the old waves of toys and releasing the new waves of toys. And they did not anticipate how beloved these characters were when they killed them off. I would say more, but I don't know if you covered Season 3 yet.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH So many people just hop into the modernized movies of Transformers without giving any attention or appreciation to where it ALL BEGAN. The G1 series is so fun!
This movie was shocking when I saw it, I was a teen at the time. To see our favorite childhood toys being taken out like that was shocking. All because Hasbro wanted to sell a new generation of toys, lol.
Optimus death in this movie was very controversial on the 80s. He was every kids hero, and it was killed in the first movie of the franchise. That's why everybody demand his return in Transformers Seasons 3.
As a kid it was pretty shocking to see so many classic characters killed at the beginning of the movie. At the end of the day it was only to make room for so many new Transformers we hadn't met before including new villains like Galvatron's army and the Sharkticons all so new toys could be produced. With the awesome story and soundtrack though, this movie became something far more than just a toy commercial.
I literally grew on Transformers. I've been a fan from the beginning. Optimus Prime was my first Transformer I ever had. So Hasbro approached Marvel to create the backstory and develop the characters, with most of the original profiles being creating by Bob Budiansky. They had did this before with another toy line they had brought back with G.I.Joe (which was developed by Larry Hama). Comics created to sell toys was considered a dead end, a thing no one really wanted to do, but Bob decided to run with it. He created the names and backstories of almost all the original Transformers.
I was 19 when this came out. I was working as a teacher's aid for a daycare, and the kids were totally into Transformers. I started watching the TV show, and love it. I took my niece to see this movie, and we had a great time. Years laters; I would show it to my nephew (who is 21 years younger than his sister). We are total Transformers fans. I even own the soundtrack; as those songs rock! I'm a bit surprised; you cut this one short. You didn't give your take on the film; only talked about there this fit into the Transformers universe. For the record; this movie was to not only set in the future from the first 2 seasons, but it was to remove older transformers, for new ones. Spike was a teen in the first 2 seasons, but we see him as an adult and father. Daniel; or Dan-0 as he is called, takes his father's place in the 3rd and 4th seasons. The name Witwicky; was Spike's last name, and giving to Sam (Shia LaBeouf) in the Michael Bay movies. This had an impressive cast of Hollywood heavyweights. Orson Welles as Unicorm, Star Trek's Leonard Nimoy was Galavtion, the Brat Packs own Judd Nelson as Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, Robert Stacks (who you might remember from his role in Airplane) as Ultra Magnus, and Monty Python's own Eric Idle as Wreck-gur, the Junkion's leader. The 80's hair band style of music; really helps to sell the action of this movie. This movie upset a lot of kids; as it killed Optimus. However; Hasbro would be force to bring Optimus back; during the third season, even if it was only temporary.
One more thing; Leonard Nimoy is the only cast member to play 2 major villains, in two different films. This one, and Michael Bay's Dark of the Moon! There; he played Sentinel Prime.
in the cartoon, yes Unicron did survive. He becomes a moon of Cybertron trying to attach to the planet to have it become his new body. Optimus Prime does come back to life later in the show. There was almost a GI Joe crossover after this as well. Spkies son Daniel also later becomes paraplegic and needs full-time life support. Arcee feels bad and lets him live in her head. While Arcee is transformed Daniel can turn into a robot and walk around. This becomes the transformer's future combining humanoids and becoming headmasters and also Targetmasters where the transformer's weapons have humanoids inside them who can also transform.
The soundtrack for this movie is some of Vince DiCola's best work. It's so uniquely, unashamedly 80s and stands out as one of the best sci fi soundtracks of all time. That isn't even considering Stan Bush or White Lion's vocal power rock tracks.
Some little facts on this movie; The movie itself was the start of animated feature length movies for Hasbro’s toylines; however as they got an enormous amount of backlash for all the deaths in the movie, they altered a scene in the GI Joe movie because of it. With TF flopping, it also marked the end of the animated movies based on Hasbro’s other properties. You mentioned all the deaths, but Hasbro mandated the writers to get rid of the characters from season one of the cartoon. Their toys were discontinued not long after to make room for new products. The writers thought “okay let’s kill “em” and killed of 75%(!) of the original cast. Out of the original Decepticons, only Soundwave, his minions and the Constructicons survived. On the Autobot side, only Bumblebee, Jazz, Cliffjumper and the Dinobots survived. Technically Megatron and a few others survived due to Unicrons help, but apart from Galavatron the others don’t remember their past lives. In the movie, Galvatron was voiced by Leonard Nimoy. When the cartoon continued after the events of the movie in season 3, he was voiced by Frank Welker, the original voice of Megatron. Kids and parents were extremely angry at Hasbro for killing the characters. Many kids had some real trauma. Hasbro had no idea that Optimus Prime became so beloved by kids. One of the reasons is that Prime was voiced by Peter Cullen, who put so much love in that voice which kids grew to love. Cullen himself was shocked to see that he was killed off. However in the final two episodes of season 3 of the Transformers, they brought back Optimus. He was returned to life after the universe was slowly affected by the rage viru- I mean the hate plague. Another character who came back from the dead was Starscream, as a ghost. He wanted to have revenge on Galvatron and made a pact with Unicron. Starscream’s ghost even made a guest appearance in Beast Wars, where he took control of Waspinator. And oh, Optimus was eventually killed off again in the fourth season of the Transformers, the Headmasters, which was Japanese exclusive.
I saw this on RUclips last month! It was incredible. I never saw transformers growing up, but my dad did and this was his favorite transformers movie. Still couldn't believe they killed optimus and he stayed dead for just this movie
He was dead for a majority of Season 3, in point of fact. This movie was between seasons 2 & 3. They brought him back as kind of a zombie in one episode, then brought him back for good in the final 2 episodes of S3 due to the backlash of parents and kids with him being killed in the movie. They had all of S3 in the can and ready to go when the movie was released (summer of '86, S3 started in September), so they had to do a 2-episode arc to bring him back at the end of the season.
To answer your question on why the Junkions ( the trash planet transformers) couldn’t fix Optimus Prime, requires a bit of a dive into Transformers lore. I want to make it clear this my own theory based off my knowledge of Transformers lore. When Ultra Magnus blew up, he didn’t die he went into stasis lock. Stasis lock is when a transformer’s body is heavily damaged, it will shut down to conserve what is left of the energeon ( aka their blood ). The body will only reactivate when it’s repaired. Optimus Prime couldn’t be repaired because his spark went out. (a spark is kinda like a transformers’ heart and soul combined into one object). Once the spark goes out the transformer is dead and can only be revived by a unnatural or spiritual source. I really hope that answers your question Tim and I hope I wasn’t to confusing. P.S. Love your videos man.
Optimus and Prowls sparks were extinguished hence they changed colors, ultra magnus sparked wasn't extinguished so he could have been revived easily, technically windcharger, wheeljack, brawn, Ratchet, and Ironhide could've been repaired by the junkions but Unicron and the quintesons were the only ones able to rekindle transformers sparks and they used this ability later on in season 3 and in the comic books is the technical answer, the real answer is ultra magnus was a shiny new toy and is basically a white Optimus prime remodel and hasbro wasn't going to kill of a 79 dollar toy in his 1st official appearance.
The tv show was pretty campy but the movie really mixes in some darker tones to the usual formula. It’s very 80’s but it also established some of the most iconic lines and moments from TF lore. Even though it’s technically set in the middle of the series, it’s a good way to get familiar with many aspects of the TF franchise.
Best movie soundtrack EVER!! I was 19 when this came out, and I saw it in theaters. The place was filled with kids and their parents. Many of them were traumatized by this movie. Some even left mid-movie crying their eyes out because of all the death and destruction. The cartoon series didn't have any of that. 25:05 - The song is "Dare to be Stupid", and was one of Weird Al's biggest hits at the time.
The movie takes place between the second and third series of the G1 cartoon. As the whole point of the cartoon was to sell toys, the movie was there to clear the decks of last year's toy range and push the new toys. Trouble is, the execs hadn't really understood just how invested in the original characters that kids had become, especially Peter Cullen's Optimus Prime. So got a lot of flack from angry parents because their kids had just seen their hero brutally murdered. But the ironic thing is, the killing off of the main character was originally planned for the GI Joe movie with Duke being killed, but due to delays and issues, the GI Joe movie (which was supposed to come out first) came out after the TF movie and because of the backlash against killing Prime they just had Duke "go into a coma", even though he's clearly dead. Also, when the film was released, they included the line "oh shit, what are we going to do now" spoken by Spike so that they could get a PG rating - this was because PG films received more showings than U rated movies and so the studio hoped to make the movie more profitable. The line was edited out of the home video release
Yeah, I grew up on this. It was released in theaters and then aired as a five part miniseries on the show. While Hasbro viewed it as a line refresh it was a bombshell on us kids. It was a generational trauma for 4-14 year olds. For a lot of kids home alone after school "latchkey kids" as we were known, characters like Optimus Prime and Duke on GI Joe were surrogate fathers. Lion-O was a big brother, etc. Killing him off in such a truly dramatic fashion caused so many tears that parents wrote in laying Hasbro out. Ultimately it was a good thing. Hasbro realized they had more than a toyline, they had a *franchise.* And Optimus Prime *is* the Franchise. It ultimately saved Transformers in the long run.
Great reaction Tim to this 80s animated classic....'You Got The The Touch' song (especially wheh played at the the end of the film when Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime and you even hear the voice of Optimus Prime in the background as they both say "Light Our Darkest Hour" when they open the energy unimatrix to defeat Unicron) gets me in the feels every time 🥲👍
I few years ago i re-watched the original series, and one thing that sprung to mind as an adult, that I didn't think about as a kid was, where does the trailer appear from/disappear to, when Optimus Prime transforms 😂
Hey Timothee, This movie was the final movie that Orson Welles had done before he'd died In fact, both he and Scatman Crothers (who voiced Jazz) had died before this movie was even released Also, Leonard Nimoy had voiced Galvatron
In the Transformers franchise Unicron is the Chaos bringer, the God of Evil and Destruction and enemy to all Transformers Autobots and Decepticons, Unicron is also the Brother of Primus who is the God of Light, life and order and Primus became the planet cybertron and the first transformers was created the original 13 primes and the Matrix of Leadership
Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime is such an underrated character. I hope one day when Peter Cullen finally retires Optimus Prime we can get Judd Nelson to come back and reprise his role.
This movie was one of the best TF movies of all time. Even though I did not grow up with the '86 transformers, I still think this is one of the best movies of the franchise. We got to see how powerful Unicron is and he is pretty much a god, a planet eating monster god. Apart from Unicron, the transformers home planet, Cybertron, also known as Primus, is also like Unicron but he is his twin brother. One good, one evil. A constant struggle between light and dark. Optimus Prime dying in this movie is one of the biggest moments of all cinema, and this movie does not shy away from killing characters off. This movie pretty much saw the end of most of the old characters (from season 1 and 2) and introduces new ones (seasons 3 and 4). Although to tell sth interesting, the japanese version of '86 series, went off to do its own thing. After the '86 movie, the japanese version did not air seasons 3 & 4 of the series, instead they created their own series which are also pretty good as there are a bunch of new characters we've never seen in the american version while still retaining some of the original characters. The japanese series continues after the '86 movie as follows: Transformers: The Headmasters, Transformers: Victory and Transformers: Zone, in addition with I think a movie called Transformers: Scamble City. They've also done a similar thing with Beast Wars Transformers and other TF series in the future. Can't wait to see ur reaction to Rise of the Beasts as it is on par with Dark of the Moon and the 2007 TF movie.
Yeah..... No.... None of that was a thing back then. Cybertron was just a planet, and Unicorn was made by this little alien dude. He was just an immensely powerful robot, not a god.
the Matrix of Leadership contains the essence of Primus, all the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of the past Primes, and it is also the source of all new transformer Sparke(souls)
Primus is the creator of the Transformers and as a dying god he used the past of his power to turn his body into Cybertron... his mortal enemy Unicron also turned his body into a planet to seek out and destroy Primus ... so ya a God can see many things that may concern him
This movie was so dark that kids were litteraly crying in theaters and families had to leave theaters cuz of it. Parents were upset about the depression it had on their children. It was pretty crazy. Side note: Hot Rid git a lot of hate for getting Optimus killed.
It's kinda sad that today every iteration of Optimus Prime dies and is eventually revived, so nobody really cares anymore. Nowadays its like a tick on the checklist of things that should happen in every Transformers series, but when this movie actually did it for the first time, that was a major shock to people. And the music during the death scene is just... incredible.
I can’t recommend highly enough the show Transformers Prime. Honestly a decent contender for best show of the Cartoon Network era and easily the best transformers series. It’s 3 seasons long, so only about 65 episodes, and it concludes on one of the best tf movies.
I 100% second all this. I found a reactor a few weeks back that reacted to every episode of it, the only reactor I could find that has, and I binged all those videos in like half a week, lol
@@JacobKasza Sean was the one I was thinking of. Didn’t even know there were two others, he was the only one I could find that was covering every ep when I tried searching. I’ll have to check out the other two as well.
It’s a shame that Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime got so much hate after this movie. He really had potential and could’ve been a good leader. Unfortunately, they didn’t really do much with him in the later seasons. Heck Optimus was originally supposed to stay dead, but after so much hate mail from fans and parents they decided to resurrect him near the series end.
rodimus was fine and nobody hated him they instead hated that hasbro killed off optimus and put someone in his place that was not as good a leader as him.(he could have grown into the role but imo was not written that way) they gave up on making him a leader and brought back optimus that again caused a ruckus in the way it was done.
I remember seeing this at the cinema when I was a kid 😂 When the new movies started being released, I remember telling the younger generations I was working with that i saw the original movie at the cinema in the 80s 😂
the guy who voiced blur? Has the record for being the fastest talker. If you recall seeing the micromachines ads, the fast talking guy in those, that's him. there's also a theory in my head that essentially the junkions are zombie cybertronians. They've lost all sense of their original identities from centuries swapping parts to repair themselves. That any cybertronian they put back together is a Junkion now. Meaning Ultra Magnus is a fresh Junkion, and likely able to repair himself by just shoving parts back together again. Him still being fresh is why he's still Ultra Magnus.
The Dino-Bots weren’t able to combine when they were first introduced. Later versions of the these Transformers of these characters are able to combine.
It's wild that people watch this movie without seeing the original show. We really need reactions to the Gen 1 cartoon series, it's SO underrated! It's one of the best versions of Transformers, honestly. It's a classic, and this movie hits WAY harder for the people who saw it beforehand. This movie was nuts because it basically kills off so many of the OG characters fans grew to know and love through the first 2 seasons. It's definitely much darker compared to show, which is part of what makes it SO great
If you want the answer to the ending and everything then you need to watch season 3 after this for the 5 part pilot 5 faces of darkness. Also just watch transformers shows in general (G1, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Animated, Prime and Earthspark).
Marvel had a licence to make Transformers comics back in the day and various stories tied into this movie. Things got slightly complicated as there were separate US and UK continuities, which also varied from the animated show. Marvel also did comics for GI Joe, and there were some Transformers / GI Joe crossovers. Spike and Daniel in this movie are from the Witwicky family, a name they re-used for Shia Labouef’s character in the Michael Bay movies. Spike and his father Sparkplug were the Autobot’s first human allies in the animated show; in the comics, they were called Buster and Sparkplug Witwicky but a Spike Witwicky was eventually introduced.
This takes place in the future after season 1 and 2 of Transformers: G1 cartoon from the 80's and season 3 (and I believe there's a 4th season as well?) continues where the movie ends. It's funny to think that this was basically the last movie Orson Welles made before he died and I love his description of the movie; "I play a big toy that destroy smaller toys" 🤣 The guy who voiced Blurr really did talk that fast, he was in commercials for FedEx and Micro Machines doing that fast voice!
THIS is the transformers i grew up with! ive lost count of how many times ive seen this movie! i wore out my VHS copy and now own TWO copies on DVD. i also wore out my cassette of the sound track cuz it was so damn good! i even still have my Unicron toy! SOOO glad you watched and liked this!!! oh and yes, the song is Dare to Be Stupid by Weird Al" Yankovic
On the rare occasion that Prime used it, the trailer opens to reveal a portable field base with a remote gun platform complete with Roller, a small drone vehicle that is part ATV, part moon buggy.
Transformers is a co-creation of Hasbro and TakaraTomy. In the '80s Hasbro was mainly a toy company, but had production partners such as Sunbow Productions, Marvel Productions, Toei Animation and AKOM for their IP.
Hasbro created their own production company titled: Hasbro Studios 2009-19. Later rebranded as Allspark 2019-20, then folded into their eOne [Entertainment One] 2020-23. 3 months ago, they made a new division titled: Hasbro Entertainment 2023-present.
You are correct-this movie is incredibly dark. Now, imagine watching the show, getting to know and love all the characters, and seeing them die. That is what people who saw this when it came out experienced. This was my first introduction to Transformers in 2005 (I was two). It obviously did not sting since I knew nothing about these characters at that time. I am glad you enjoyed the movie, though. I highly recommend watching a couple of episodes of the original cartoon so you can see the major tone and animation differences. Also, you are right and wrong: Peter Cullen has voiced Optimus Prime from the very beginning, yes, and he technically has voiced him to this very day. Obviously, he has not voiced him in everything, though. Other than the movies-and og cartoon-he has voiced Optimus in the tie-in movie games, Transformers Prime (and the accompanying film), Transformers: Prime Wars Trilogy, War for Cybertron, Fall of Cybertron, Rise of the Dark Spark, Transformers Devastation, Robots in Disguise (continuation of Transformers Prime), and Rescue Bots. He has also voiced him in minor things like Transformers Universe (a discontinued MMO) and a couple of interactive rides.
I really don't like seeing Optimus die in any incarnation. He's my #1 favorite Autobot/Transformer, but damn if he didn't have a really great final fight against Megatron. Also....The universal greeting is understood by most creatures in the galaxy. It can be roughly translated to "Hello, we mean you no harm," or "We come in peace," or "Do you hate dirtwad Decepticons as much as we do?"
The movie is supposed to be set after Season 2,before Season 3. That's why characters such as Hot Rod,Springer,Wheelie and Ultra Magnus are in Season 3 while a large number of old characters are no longer in the show as of this point.
This movie, along with the 80s TV show it's based on, are great! I remember seeing reruns. Also, did you know that the story of the 80s show is continued in the early CGI show Beast Wars, produced by the famous Canadian studio Mainframe Entertainment (the guys behind the first CGI-animated show ReBoot)?
The human character who is with Bumblebee this whole movie is who Shia LaBeouf played in the first three Transformers movies. And his son's mother is the blonde girl, Carly, that Sam was dating in Transformers Dark of the Moon. Also...in the unmade version of Transformers The Last Knight that we almost got (and should have gotten), Grimlock (the T-Rex Dinobot) would have pretty much been the Hot Rod role from this movie. He would have been restored and upgraded from how he was in Transformers Age of Extinction and been revealed as Volcanicus Prime and been the one to destroy Unicron. He and the other Dinobots were supposed to be The Last Knights. Optimus even refers to them as such in Age of Extinction. Such a missed opportunity..
This is the definitive transformers movie. Also this movie is set after season 2 of the show and sets up season 3. You should watch it. 11:41 the matrix of leadership is not a power source it what makes a leaser of the autobots and this movie is it's introduction never established in the first two seasons. For someone who watched the live action movies you don't pay attention much
I didn’t grow up in the 80s but this was probably the first movie I saw when I was like 5, and yeah of course I cried when Optimus died :(. Ultimately the movie is just a long advertisement for the new wave of robots in the transformers toy line, with 90% of the old cast dying out to make way for the new ones. Still, fans regard it highly as it spawned much of the tf lore that is common nowadays. For example, Unicron is also the threat in ROTB (though more of a background one) and functioning basically the same as in this movie. The Matrix is now commonly associated with Primus, basically the God of transformers who is literally Cybertron. Anyway, I could ramble on so I’ll just say it’s cool to see people checking out this old bit of 80s memorabilia and I enjoyed the video!
This movie released after Season 2 of the Cartoon. And on the topic of Rocky, the composer of this film was the Composer for Rocky IV. Also I'm glad you watched this before Rise of the Beasts, I won't say why.
You have to take a moment to appreciate the range of actors they got for this movie. Orson Wells, The voice of Unsolved Mysteries, The butler from Hart to Hart, Spock, Bender from the Breakfast Club, the Micromachine Man...
The real reason they didn't revive Optimus is was Hasbro wanted to discontinue the Optimus Prime toy. The in universe reason they couldn't revive Optimus is because Optimus' spark chamber was too damaged, while Magnus' wasn't that damaged, it'd be like a human getting shot in the heart compared to the heart getting nicked, in one case Dr.s can't do anything to save the patient, in the other they can operate on and fix the heart.
So for context Tim,every characther that died in this movie was done to sell the toys of new characthers and replace the old ones, almost every characther in the first two season either died, was resplaced or played a very minor role in this movie, just a few of the main characthers from the show survived the events of this movie, pretty much right until the death of Optimus Prime its an actual movie about the show after that everything its done to sell the new toys
Shocking or not, that closeup of Prowl's face as his insides caught fire and smoke poured out his mouth is pretty horrifying imagery, especially for something that was ostensibly for kids.
Man, when I first time watched this cartoon (I was around 10) the deaths of so many characters I love (especially Optimus Prime) made me cry so much my mom actually had to comfort me for half an hour lmao. Still one of my time favorites.

I always thought Blurrs fast talking in this movie was done with editing, but no his voice actor can actually talk that fast. He even holds the record for most words said. 80s kids remember him as the Micro Machines guy. He even voiced as Blurr again in the Transformers Animated series.
He first rose to fame in a SuperBowl commercial for FedEx forwhenitabsolutelypositivelyhastogetthereovernight.
I can't imagine him after a cup of Cuban coffee. He'd really be a blur then.😂
John Maschitta actually used to be an auctioneer before he became the Micromachines guy. He's in the Guiness book of world records for being the fastest speaker.
Blurr did John maschita
Peter Cullen has been voicing Optimus Prime for decades. He's still got it.
He also voiced Ironhide in the cartoon.
badmouth the movie okay because over 30 years later, things change. But The Touch, who wants to FIGHT ANYONE who wouldn't enjoy it??? Listened to it twice since Yesterday.
He not only still has it, he got some extra
Although I'm pretty sure other people did voice Optimus in some of the shows. But there's only one true Optimus voice.
Yup, and Orson Welles as Unicron (the last piece of work Welles did before dying, I think) is timeless.
@@morganghostbusters-egonfan you confused Orson Wells for Vincent Price as the narrator for Michael Jackson's Thriller.
@DanGaningFan:
As a matter of fact, this was the final film that Orson Welles was involved in before he'd died
Btw, you neglected to mention that Leonard Nimoy voiced Galvatron

This cartoon version of the Transformers is amazing.

@freddycashbear2164 Excuse me, but Rescue Bots(in continuity with Prime and RiD) wasn't that bad. Oh yeah, and Earthspark hates tomboys, apparently.
The movie might have been a failure when it came out but nowadays, it is well remembered
The reason why many characters were killed off was because their toys were discontinued, having characters dying was something that never happened in the cartoon (at least in season 1 and 2)
Optimus’s death traumatized the kids, a lot of them left the theaters in that scene. At that time Hasbro saw Optimus as a product, they didn’t realized Prime was seen as an icon until this happened, to fix this they got to work on a two parter for the season 3 finale called “The return of Optimus Prime” and this is why now every time he dies he always come back
No matter how many times he got hit, he always got back up.
Until that day.... 'til all are one
Still don't care for the movie much this series was much better
Snap ( 7 )
I watched the 20th Anniversary DVD (I was born in the 90s) and it still hit me emotionally. And in 2021, I watched this film in theaters for its 35th Anniversary. What a way to watch it. Unicron is really imposing and intimidating on the big screen.
i saw the movie at home and i wouldn't watch it again until i was in my 20s.
for kid me, losing prime was a kick in the nuts.
@@Shintigercurl You don't even h about ve to be an 80s kid to feel that. I watched it on the 20th Anniversary DVD as a kid.
I wonder how many of those kids grew up wanting that big rig truck.
People love to hate on Hot Rod for interupting the Optimus fight. But he's literally the only reason Optimus showed up to anything but a mass grave.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH
So many people just hop into the modernized movies of Transformers without giving any attention or appreciation to where it ALL BEGAN.
The G1 series is so fun!
This movie was shocking when I saw it, I was a teen at the time. To see our favorite childhood toys being taken out like that was shocking. All because Hasbro wanted to sell a new generation of toys, lol.
Being younger my first time seeing transformers was the early 2000s shows didn't see this until later and it was shocking and amazing
Even though I wasn't born in the 80s or earlier, I am aware how much trauma did this movie bring to children back then. It's still good, though.
Spike's "Oh Shit" cracked me up almost as much as Lt. Commander Data saying it
In Star Trek Generations.
Optimus death in this movie was very controversial on the 80s. He was every kids hero, and it was killed in the first movie of the franchise. That's why everybody demand his return in Transformers Seasons 3.
7:31 Surprisingly, the Dinobots are the one team of Transformers that weren’t able to combine until a few years ago. Not even the toys.
They were badass enough to take on Devestator without having to.
The voice cast in this movie is fantastic. The soundtrack is also awesome. The Touch by Stan Bush is probably the best song ever.
The Weird Al song playing over the scenes with the Junkions is "Dare to be Stupid", a pastiche of the 80s band Devo
Easily the best toy advert ever made, with an amazing soundtrack. I always say "Till all are one!" when 2005 comes up 😭
I literally grew on Transformers.
The movie that Traumatized Children around the world. Nearly all of the deaths were the beloved original characters.
Some little facts on this movie;
The movie itself was the start of animated feature length movies for Hasbro’s toylines; however as they got an enormous amount of backlash for all the deaths in the movie, they altered a scene in the GI Joe movie because of it.
And oh, Optimus was eventually killed off again in the fourth season of the Transformers, the Headmasters, which was Japanese exclusive.
scourge kinda remember his past live, at least he recognised starscream's ghost
"My fellow Decepticons, as your new leader I"-I THINK AN AD IS COMING!
I can't believe an ad showed up and interrupted Starscream.😂
My childhood and the music is epic.
I always hated how they made Duke survive. Even as a kid, I thought it felt stupid and forced with how they approached it.
This movie is set between the second and third season of the TV series from the 1980s.
Great reaction Tim to this 80s animated classic....'You Got The The Touch' song (especially wheh played at the the end of the film when Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime and you even hear the voice of Optimus Prime in the background as they both say "Light Our Darkest Hour" when they open the energy unimatrix to defeat Unicron) gets me in the feels every time 🥲👍
My favorite Autobots are - (with exception of Optimus Prime), Bumblebee, Wheeljack, Jazz, Inronhide, Cliffjumper, Hound, Blaster, Ratchet, Dinobot Grimlock, Jetfire, Blur, Arcee, Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, Wheelie & Wreck-Gar
My favorite Decepticons are - (with the exception of Megatron), Galvatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Shockwave, Rumble, Ravage, Razorbeak, Devastator, Thundercracker, Scourge, Astrotrain, Skywarp, Ramjet, Shrapnel, Judge Deliberata & Unicron
This is probably one of the best if not the best cartoon/movie I watched!
I few years ago i re-watched the original series, and one thing that sprung to mind as an adult, that I didn't think about as a kid was, where does the trailer appear from/disappear to, when Optimus Prime transforms 😂
USA comics: "Censorship doesn´t matter if they are robots."
Transformers: "Let´s test that."
And still the best movie of Transformers
Hey Timothee, This movie was the final movie that Orson Welles had done before he'd died
In fact, both he and Scatman Crothers (who voiced Jazz) had died before this movie was even released
Also, Leonard Nimoy had voiced Galvatron
In the Transformers franchise Unicron is the Chaos bringer, the God of Evil and Destruction and enemy to all Transformers Autobots and Decepticons, Unicron is also the Brother of Primus who is the God of Light, life and order and Primus became the planet cybertron and the first transformers was created the original 13 primes and the Matrix of Leadership
Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime is such an underrated character. I hope one day when Peter Cullen finally retires Optimus Prime we can get Judd Nelson to come back and reprise his role.
I grew up on the TV show and the movie
The japanese series continues after the '86 movie as follows:
Transformers: The Headmasters, Transformers: Victory and Transformers: Zone, in addition with I think a movie called Transformers: Scamble City.
Primacron was the name of the Alien.
the Matrix of Leadership contains the essence of Primus, all the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of the past Primes, and it is also the source of all new transformer Sparke(souls)
And the music during the death scene is just... incredible.
I never noticed it before but Unicron says " Welcome, Megatron', he considers himself a place as much as a being.
Also the head junk robot is Monty python

I reccomend you Transformers prime, is one of the greatest series of the franchise.
There are a lot of weird things in this movie because it was rewritten dozens of times before they finally settled on plot.
I can’t recommend highly enough the show Transformers Prime. Honestly a decent contender for best show of the Cartoon Network era and easily the best transformers series. It’s 3 seasons long, so only about 65 episodes, and it concludes on one of the best tf movies.

And he should have stayed Rodimus in season 4 after Optimus came back
rodimus was fine and nobody hated him they instead hated that hasbro killed off optimus and put someone in his place that was not as good a leader as him.(he could have grown into the role but imo was not written that way) they gave up on making him a leader and brought back optimus that again caused a ruckus in the way it was done.
But it's by making Rodimus the replacement of Prime that people started hating him though.
What the hell do you mean?! He literally got Prime killed! He was also a shitty leader afterwards.

The voice actor who played Starscream also voiced Cobra Commander in the GIJoe cartoons from that same era.
I remember seeing this at the cinema when I was a kid 😂
When the new movies started being released, I remember telling the younger generations I was working with that i saw the original movie at the cinema in the 80s 😂
the guy who voiced blur? Has the record for being the fastest talker. If you recall seeing the micromachines ads, the fast talking guy in those, that's him.
there's also a theory in my head that essentially the junkions are zombie cybertronians. They've lost all sense of their original identities from centuries swapping parts to repair themselves. That any cybertronian they put back together is a Junkion now. Meaning Ultra Magnus is a fresh Junkion, and likely able to repair himself by just shoving parts back together again. Him still being fresh is why he's still Ultra Magnus.
Man, that was one thing you could count on in 80's and early to mid 90's cartoons, tons of action and soundtracks going off the hook lol.
Classic! It reminds of my favorite show that is based The Transformers: Robotech.
It's funny to think that this was basically the last movie Orson Welles made before he died and I love his description of the movie; "I play a big toy that destroy smaller toys" 🤣
The guy who voiced Blurr really did talk that fast, he was in commercials for FedEx and Micro Machines doing that fast voice!
That’s where I start with the transformers movie before, Michael bay and the reboot.
Id really hate to say this but the name"rodimus prime' sounds much cooler than "optimus prime"
This movie is much better than the Michael Bay live action Transformer movies. The animation takes the characters more seriously than the movies.
Optimus' Death was So Sad and Dramatic!
Optimus Prime and Peter Cullen are my heroes. I am so happy you watched this movie😁
The death of Optimus Prime shattered me as Kid, when I watched this with my cousin I was legit crying and shocked
THIS MOVIE IS PEAK
Not only was it hand drawn, but they were also animating season two.
The phrase curves like a Ferrari takes on all new meaning with Arcee.
The movie is supposed to be set after Season 2,before Season 3. That's why characters such as Hot Rod,Springer,Wheelie and Ultra Magnus are in Season 3 while a large number of old characters are no longer in the show as of this point.
This movie was a light in my childhood
This movie, along with the 80s TV show it's based on, are great! I remember seeing reruns.
Also, did you know that the story of the 80s show is continued in the early CGI show Beast Wars, produced by the famous Canadian studio Mainframe Entertainment (the guys behind the first CGI-animated show ReBoot)?
the song playing during the Junkion dance scene is Dare to be Stupid by Weird Al
I saw this in the movie theater back in the day
The human character who is with Bumblebee this whole movie is who Shia LaBeouf played in the first three Transformers movies.
How many of us 80s kids played w/ the summer fans, recreating 'Wheelie's distorted voice?
The real reason they didn't revive Optimus is was Hasbro wanted to discontinue the Optimus Prime toy. The in universe reason they couldn't revive Optimus is because Optimus' spark chamber was too damaged, while Magnus' wasn't that damaged, it'd be like a human getting shot in the heart compared to the heart getting nicked, in one case Dr.s can't do anything to save the patient, in the other they can operate on and fix the heart.
blaster is my all time favorite transformer ever
So for context Tim,every characther that died in this movie was done to sell the toys of new characthers and replace the old ones, almost every characther in the first two season either died, was resplaced or played a very minor role in this movie, just a few of the main characthers from the show survived the events of this movie, pretty much right until the death of Optimus Prime its an actual movie about the show after that everything its done to sell the new toys
10:32 they did to sell new toys
ONE OF THE BEST THEME SONGS!
Shocking or not, that closeup of Prowl's face as his insides caught fire and smoke poured out his mouth is pretty horrifying imagery, especially for something that was ostensibly for kids.
That's the second time I've seen someone use that specific convention comic cover by mistake instead of the real poster.
Optimus gets revived like 13 episodes later because people didn’t like that he was dead.
Man, when I first time watched this cartoon (I was around 10) the deaths of so many characters I love (especially Optimus Prime) made me cry so much my mom actually had to comfort me for half an hour lmao. Still one of my time favorites.
John Moschita who voiced Blurr made his career doing Micro Machine Commercials and being the fastest talking person iin the world back in the 80s
