I know everybody says this, but it is incredibly bizarre seeing NPR personalities, whose disembodied voices are so very familiar, speaking on camera for the first time.
1.4 Billion pounds of Cheese. I'm constipated just watching this video! Seriously: When I was a kid we would get big bricks of surplus Government cheese from Food pantries for needy families. We would get so much, it was running from our ears. Some people will have something to say about this but, that was the best for Grilled cheese sandwiches and Mac and cheese. If you didn't get this cheese, you didn't know what it was like to be poor. There was also Government surplus canned pulled Pork. I remember it fondly!! To this day, I would still be happy to have it!
I remember our family's getting government cheese (and bread, and peanut butter) when I was a kid. It was really some of the best cheese ever! It has been an ongoing quest in our family to find cheese on par with government cheese. That said, nostalgia is a powerful flavoring agent.
All the ration chefs in the 101st used to stock up on the government cheesese. We were all supposed to be on a diet but two, three, some time four egg omelette for breakfast and at least two kiof cheese at every meal.
A) the production design on this was stupendous!! B) i would like to know the economic SPECIAL INTEREST side of the story ( im sure he didnt just randomly CHOOSE milk as an industry to subsidize :)
This is some quality content! I grew-up knowing about government cheese but never thought to enquirer about it's origins. By the time I was of age to be interested, it was no longer a term in the collective lexicon and it remained absent in my mind. Thanks NPR!
Moldy cheese? Reprocess it? Give it to your poor citizens! Reprocessed government cheese made great grill cheese sandwiches. We use to sit around eating piles of them while laughing at all the rich suckers who paid for cheese.
DGAS about all that.. Best cheese I ever had.. Don't remember how long I last had some.. Dam this channel.. I don't even know how this popped up.. Anybody got cheese? I'll give you a dollar..
@@GoogleUser-kr6se I used to teach ESL to Hmong refugees. Free pork day was the only time they would stand in line with blacks - they didn't hate them, just scared to death.
Actually, we had government cheese back in the 50's when I was in grade school. I loved the cheese and crackers we got a couple times a week at afternoon recess. And we could have as much as we wanted.
Thank you, Jimmy Carter. A Bold Promise. A Bold Plan. Promise Made, Promise Kept. The program certainly needed to be fined tuned. I don't think Reagan would end up giving away cheese to the poor if they didn't have any cheese.
HowSci let’s not split hairs. Reagan and Carter were both the worst examples of both major parties. It’s best not to say because one was better than the other even if you’re a staunch partisan. At the very least we can say Jimmy Carter was a better person even if he was a terrible president. Reagan was both a bad person and a terrible president.
After pasteurization is when milk and cheese turn into something nasty and unusable. That process kills off the good bacteria that is in raw milk. FIND A FARM NEAR YOU AND GET A FARM (cow share) SO YOU TOO CAN HAVE THE GOOD STUFF.
If it had been Nixon instead of Reagan we'd be calling it "Dick Cheese" instead of "Gov't Cheese"
@ Wolfgang Von Zubaz! OMG you just made me spit my food out!!! HILARIOUS!!!
Lmfao!

It doesn't taste the same :-(
But it’s two molecules away from plastic?
Now I want cheese
Love the easter egg of Carter workshopping the crisis of confidence / malaise speech on his desk.
Just watched a guy unbox this cheese. It’s still available.
Available? Im sitting on 8 boxes of it that my neighbor brings over randomly
This is such a great video to teach price ceilings with. Please never take this down.

Too Bad governement doenst stay out of it and the consumers and farmers work the price out together.

I gave this a thumbs up for how cheesy their cheese puns were. So bad it deserves it for effort lol

Here's yet another example why congress must defund NPR.
What's the mellow bluegrass music at the end?
This is way too well produced. Thank you very much for this and it's great to see all these cool people having fun.
Actually there's a few other videos on RUclips that are way better than this one on government cheese. Expected better from npr
Grate, really.

I love Cheese! 🇺🇸💐🙏
I originally thought this was about Andrew Jackson's big block of cheese, but no dice...
The topic and content is great, but the execution and humor could use some work.
thanks Reagan

You can leave it unpasteurized but you should sanitize it by heat
