Usually the applicable phrase is: “The lottery is a tax on people who don’t understand mathematics.” But in Stephan’s case the phrase was: “The lottery can be a windfall for those who understand mathematics well enough to guarantee a win.” Of course he wasn’t *guaranteed* a win in Romania, and in Virginia there was a real chance that he could end up splitting the pot with several other winners (and also there was a real chance that the state of Virginia would refuse to pay and the courts would back them up).
Donovan Murphy I have no knowledge of Australian taxation rules, but in the US lottery winnings are typically exempt from state taxes in the state where the lottery is held; for example, in Pennsylvania a PA resident who won in the PA state lottery would not be subject to PA income tax, only Federal tax. Not the best example because In 2016 PA started taxing lottery winnings, but until 2016 winnings were exempt from PA taxes. If the federal government were to run a nationwide lottery the winnings would presumably be tax free.
combinatorial condensation is not a real thing. I like how they just gloss over that like oh yeah he figured out how to predict the first 5 numbers but then he just stopped using that for some reason. If the Romanian lottery is like the other lotteries (as implied) it’s not possible to the predict numbers no matter how many math papers you read. Also if you predicted 5 of the 6 numbers the number of combinations would be much less than 1000.
I missed how exactly this scheme worked. Is it just that, when the prize pot for a lottery gets big enough, the expected return on any ticket for that draw becomes positive? Then you'd be able to buy enough tickets to cover all the possible number combinations, such that the expected return becomes guaranteed (assuming no split pot)?
It mentions he figured out a formula which correctly predicted 5 of the 6 numbers, so there were only a few thousand combinations. Sounded like he earned the majority of his money from that, then raised money through insurance sales to buy every ticket combination in the Virginia lotto in 1992.
Odds of winning a 6/49 (need 6 numbers between 1 and 49 to win) are 1:13,983,816 {49×48×47×46×45×44÷(6×5×4×3×2×1)}. Not sure if this theory would work with the ticket costs and prize money of some lotteries.
Massachusetts used to have a lottery game with a "push down" feature, meaning that if no one won the big prize for a long time, they redistributed a lot of that money to the lesser prizes. Well it turns out that there are a bunch of people in Mass. who are good at math, so whenever the "push down" feature happened, ticket sales skyrocketed and a few key players/"investors" got rich. The game has since been terminated. I think they now have a law limiting individuals to purchase not more than 10,000 tickets for any draw.
I won the lottery in a past life, so now all i have to do is built a time machine , go back the the exact date that i won and relive the entire experience ,,,,, forever.
Idea to bypass an "nobody can buy every combination of numbers" law: Buy every combination of lottery tickets except 1 2 3 4 5 6. Even if that number got picked, you'd barely make anything anyways because so many people pick those numbers that it'd be split between several thousand people.

Why is a woman playing a man?
Don't take this weak bait.
Couldn't find a man to play the male character huh?
Julia Melfi (NPR's Ask Me Another) played the male character, Stefan Mondale.
This is weak bait. Try harder next time.
Celestial Morning Light prob because the whole thing is bs even down to a woman playing a man..dont lose sleep you not winning the lotto
Your videos have an incredible low Informationen density per second, which makes them barely watchable...
The information density feels LOWER than in your podcasts which is doubly bad since one can drive or clean the room during a podcast which is not possible during a video... =/
Watch the videos at 2x speed.
Why they can't have a male playing the male character? Specially with real live stories. It really makes you think that one day they are going to start lying if it serves their ideology. I am so glad I stopped giving them money :)
Of all the things you've learned here and were entertained by, this is what makes you comment?
No, it doesn't make me think that, I don't think it would make anyone think that who isn't insecure
Men have been playing female roles for years. Get over it. Nobody seems bothered by this reversal in this context except you
This is weak bait. Try harder next time.
Lol who gives a shit. You’re pathetic. This is what people are worried about nowadays? Smfh
The video production level for Planet Money videos offends me. It just makes me think, "is this the actual quality of the show i listen to? Just well-to-doodle New Yorkers that wish they actually worked at Buzzfeed making crap faux-hipster garb video?" NPR, you are better than this.
