Could you also say "Lintu on laatikolla" to mean "The bird is on top of the box"? 🤔
If I said that would I be understood?
And how would you say "The bird is far away from the box"? Lintu on kaukana laatikosta? Is that the correct case?

I would say "Lintu on laatikon päällä" rather than laatikolla. It seems that with things that are commonly used as objects to put things on or that people or animals commonly spend time sitting or standing on (e.g. hylly - hyllyllä, pöytä - pöydällä, tuoli - tuolilla, kivi - kivellä, puun oksa - puun oksalla, sohva - sohvalla, tyyny - tyynyllä, katto - katolla), you can easily use -llA to signify "on". But for the following I'd use päällä: laatikon päällä, television päällä, pään päällä (I KNOW, that one is confusing!!), kakun päällä etc...

If someone says "Lintu on laatikolla", you'd probably be understood, but interestingly, this could also be interpreted as "The bird is near the box / by the box".

To answer your last question: yes, that's correct, "Lintu on kaukana laatikosta" 🙂
