    That is actually a really good idea I never thought of using household objects to serve as reference for building structures.

    i've been learning lately that when it comes to art, i basically need to cheat as much as i can, whenever i can. no shame in it, and it sure lightens the load and makes work more efficient. and this is such a great idea to help towards that ☆

    • @cameronrobinsonart
      @cameronrobinsonart 2 года назад +5

      If there's anything I've learned from Mark Crilley it's that you should use whatever you have at your disposal to create whatever effect that you want to create. I never listen to anybody who tries to tell you that you need to do it one certain way

    • @KaiCyreus
      @KaiCyreus 2 года назад +3

      @@cameronrobinsonart right, that's a much better way to put it, as he says in almost every video "i don't wanna tell you that this is THE way to do [x, y, or z]", he's a great teacher

    • @tmarie6211
      @tmarie6211 2 года назад +2

      He’s the best teacher. I love how he explains as he goes, and he does real time. And tells you WHYYYY. A lot of ppl on RUclips ALWAYS speed it up. Or the whole video will be sped up and it’ll say “here’s me drawing a lion” like cool. But this don’t show me shit 😆

    • @whitelion493
      @whitelion493 2 года назад

      Dude you're not cheating, you're shortcutting your way through. I like the way you think.

    Ive actually been doing this for years, since I was a kid. I remember we had a panasonic tv and remote control and the front of the controller where the infra red bar was it looked like a muscle car so i used it as a reference in loads of drawings of cars. I also couldnt wait for everyone to open their christmas gadgets and i'd always hang around for the polystyrene block packaging. I would use them for drawing scifi bases and i would also use them as actual bases to play with my star wars figures, usually the battle of Hoth, cause of the white. Throw in a few tauntauns a snowspeeder and an atat walker in and boom miniature film set... I wont knock kids today cause my nephew makes stuff on Roblox but boy were we creative and imaginative before silicon hit! I also used to make and paint up WW2 Tamia 1/35th scale military diorama get them all set up and draw the scenes from as many cool angles as I could. I'm definitely going to revive my modelling for drawing after this, thanks for jogging my memory Mark!

    That's a great tip! Over the years I've become too reliant on the internet for reference pictures. I don't use my imagination as often as I used to, and do less artwork as a result. So I really needed this advice 🤗

    Reminds me of a video I saw where the artist made a space ship out of clay, took a photo of it, and then traced it. Resources are always a great way to get your art to stand out more.

    you could also design a few basic shapes in 3d software like fusion360 (which is free for hobbyists) so you don't even need it to be stable. 3d software (or maybe more accurately called cad - computer aided design) may sound hard, but you can learn how to use it in an hour
    remember to click the perspective button instead of an orthographic projection if you want to use that though
    if you want to be able to find out where to put the shadows, i'd recommend blender (completely free), but it's a bit harder to learn

    Thank you for making this video, I´ve been using this "hack" for a very long time, tho I´ve always felt like a crazy person when I build up a scene with random objects and taking pictures with different lighting, so it´s been lika a dirty little secret for me...partly cos it looks kinda crazy and partly cos it always felt like I was cheating somehow. but after seeing this, I will let all of those emotions go :) now that I know that others are doing it too! lol
    Have a wonderful weekend Sir :) 💜
