    Thanks for the videos, really enjoy them. We have a front loader and use the commercial pellets to clean the washer. And leave the door cracked open when not in use. What I don’t understand is these appliances have been used in Europe for decades, do they have the same problem??
    I have a suggestion. I heard the plans you have for the house, and the one I would suggest to do first, is probably one of the last ones you had in mind, or in the middle. Do the bathroom in the laundry room first. That will be a small project more easily knocked out, hopefully, or will give you an idea of what you will run into for any changes to the rest of the house. In trying to add a sink, it will mean making some changes behind the walls, and will give you a chance to experience and see how they did some of the things in the walls. If you want the sink to the side of the toilet, you will have to move the dryer vent, add some plumbing to the existing, add a ceiling vent and light, etc. So it will give a look into the house and how stuff was done.

    Have you fully taken into account a vaulted ceiling, it would almost double the area to be heated and make through drafts an unpleasant fact that would have to be calculated into the overall running costs.

    Great video y'all!
    Something to help you locate your septic tank. Use a stiff rod of some kind to shove in the ground to find out if your tank is there or not. This way you don't have to dig as many holes in your yard.

      Thanks! I tried to use a probe, but no luck. There is a hard clay bed that always feels like I hit something, lol. I'm starting think it got really buried over the years. The grade is already about 6” to high around the house. Going to put more effort in, but for now still a mystery.

    Congrats on the house! you will find that there are tons of projects to do. Make a list and prioritize or you will drive yourselves crazy! Some things are critical, some are important and some are 'nice to have.' Make a list and hit the big things first, then work on the less critical things. On your front loader, it should have a self cleaning cycle that will help keep it clean. I leave the door for ours open when not in use, lets it dry out inside and helps keep it from getting moldy. Keep up the great work!

    UPDATE: I managed to get the washer 100% clean and put it back together. It will live another day and not go to waste, but the damage was done for us, so we are sticking with the newer used machines lol. I am curious if any of you also have this common issue with a front load washer?

    • @scottb.2022
      @scottb.2022 3 года назад +6

      We also have a front load washer. The owners manual tells how to clean it monthly (has a dedicated wash cycle) to avoid this type of problem. Also, we leave the door cracked open a few inches when not in use to let it air out and dry between washes. We don't have a serious problem like yours, but then, we don't live in the south, either. Good luck.

      Front loader have lots of advantages, but not draining all the way is a common issue. Leave the door cracked when not in use to help let it dry out, run cleaning cycles, see the manual for how to run and how often. Also check to see if the unit has a drain filter, if this gets pluged it can prevent the unit from draining completely.

      Top loads get that gunk built up between the spin basket and outer tub too. It mainly stems for using too much soap and too much softener. Most top loads (without a center agitator) can really struggle with out of balance loads. The washer clean cycle and some white vinegar monthly goes a long way it keeping machines clean.

  • @WasherDryerMoney
    @WasherDryerMoney 3 года назад +3

    I am an appliance repair guy. The name of the part that you could not get cleaned is a spider arm. The name of the problem is Galvanic corrosion. The spider arm that holding up the drum is made of cast aluminum and the drum is stainless steel.
    These two metals being bolted together along with the combination of electricity, corrodes and dissolves the weakest metal.
    If you Google the phrase spider arm corrosion you’ll see lots of pictures of this problem.
    It will be the downfall of all front load washers made this way. It’s a ticking time bomb there’s nothing that can be done to fix it I’ve looked very deep into this problem.
    I have heard that some front load washers are being made with a composite spider arm which would solve the problem but as for your machine very sorry to report that it will eventually fail.
    The good news is it may take years because your arm looks to only just be starting to dissolve.
    You’ll know it has failed when it starts getting out a balance. Usually it will give an unbalance error code.

    • @Woodbrew

      Interesting! We did all the cleaning we could and ended up getting a top loader at the end anyways! We couldn’t stand the thought of this washing our clothes 😅

      @@Woodbrew yeah I think you’ll be a lot happier with a Toploader. Front loaders are mainly about saving water anyway and I know y’all aren’t in a area where water conservation is a huge problem.
      Well done on getting all the way to the spider arm. That’s a major undertaking I bet only a few non-professionals ever get that far into a front loader.
      Impressive.

    • @johndoe-vc1we
      @johndoe-vc1we Год назад

      I wonder if they ever reassembled it. Easy to take things apart. I guess it would take too long to get a spider arm so they had to get another washer.

    • @johndoe-vc1we
      @johndoe-vc1we Год назад

      I also don't agree with your galvanic corrosion theory. This just plain chemical corrosion. Alkaline solutions left on the support with the door closed will eat into the spider faster than if the door was left open. A boil wash every month with citric acid would go a long way to removing that detergent buildup. Follow up with oxygen bleach if using liquid detergent or fabric softener. Did they use a proper HE detergent all the time or cheap out. There's many things you can do to prolong the life of the machine. I would blame the operator not the machine. With the right care it isn't unusual to have these machines last ten to fourteen years instead of half as long as I see in so many videos

    You may need to enlarge your HVAC if you are enlarging (raising ceilings) your living space. You'll notice this in the summer when your AC can't keep up, then in the winter if your house stays cold (heat rising).
    Do yourself a favor and clean any debris out of the rubber seal in the front by the drain hole and dry any water AFTER EVERY LOAD of laundry, then leave the door open. This will prevent any mold and mildew growth in the future. I have had the same front loading washer since 2008 and never ever had an issue with mold or mildew.

    Just leave the door open after you are done washing so that the water can properly evaporate. They also have moisture collection bags you can buy to put into the washer when you are not using it to help prevent mold. Just remember to remove the moisture bag when you go to wash. Also on the washer, there is a little door on the left bottom that needs to be cleaned out I would say once a month, it should have directions on it on how to clean it. The little clean out is a lint trap, and if it is not cleaned out, you will get a horrible smell from it that could get into your close.
