We raised quail before and will do them again hopefully next year, we cut back a bit when my husband had surgery. We found that quail are worth it if you are attentive to them and like quail meat :) - Ruthie

Nice quail coop! There are like over 22 color varieties with coturnix quail... The first one you held up is a silver/grey tuxedo, the second one is a Pharoah, he has a solid chest so it's a male.. if it's speckled it's a female... Some are feather sexable... But some you just gotta wait to see if they crow.. or you can vent check... If white foam comes out.. it's a rooster :)
For the quail, maybe leave some ground uncovered and give them some loose dirt to dust in. Most birds like dust baths.

Yea, that bothers me a lot too. And so many do it and make excuses for it. A lot of people get into homesteading to ensure their meat comes from good sources but then they turn around and take the beginning steps into commercializing it by putting profit over animal comforts. I've zero problems with people raising animals for food, just treat them the best you can while you have them, don't force them into tiny cages.
I really like Jared's setup. I'd maybe make it a little more able to walk in easier, but I think for quail you need to put some kind of stop if you give them a high ceiling as they can break their necks trying to fly up.
How many quail do you have?
Good thinking on using those buckets for nesting boxes. I would of never thought of that. Good job!

I don’t have any quail laying eggs. My two big quail I butchered them so I’m back to having all baby quail. But I have enjoyed hatching them out. I can’t wait to start getting eggs.

Good morning Jared, I put a shallow feed bowl half filled with sand in my quail cage. They love it so much they will lay almost 90% of their eggs in it. The also like to dust themselves in it. :). Have a blessed day.

Well my sweet Texas darling, I looked it up and they appear to be Common Quail. Colors range from nearly perfect white to almost solid black. I love the little quail caves you made and those white quail are gorgeous

Jared, I love my Quail. They are a great food source. They not only give yummy eggs but they grow out fast and are a good meat bird.
I have not eaten their eggs but quail is wonderful when wrapped in bacon and grilled. Looking forward to seeing how they do with the laying stations. Good luck.

We are busy winterizing our auto-watering systems: water circulation, bucket deicers, adding our custom freeze resistant nipple drinkers, and foam wrapping all the lines. This gets expensive in today's economy where a trip to the Home store is rarely less than $100. Our Bobwhite coveys (two 30 quail coveys in recall hutches) are in the woods overlooking the mighty Tully River) are running their winter auto water systems off solar, so at least the energy is free.

I have eaten qual once in my life, and that was when I was a kid in grammar school. It was so good, I have never forgotten that day. I will be 56 in October, lol that was good quail. I’ve never eaten Quail but have eaten Pheasant and liked it. Just a thought, I’d you had a small plastic bottle with a top you could freeze it and put in the quail water and keep it cooler. Have a very Happy Birthday Jared.

My quail love sand baths. I use a cat litter box. When it’s full of their poo...💩 I just use a metal strainer and shake into a different bowl then re-use the sand. I use either reptile sand or bird sand. Both work great.
Hopefully you go fishing this weekend for a little break. Your quail eggs are out of this world.

I looked up the different types of quail. Oh man, I had no idea how many types there are! Only ones around here are the ones with the do bop thingy on their heads. I have eaten Bob White but never saw what they looked like since they came home cleaned. Good to learn new things

what’s your high protein food mixture ? Me i use regular hen food and I add soy protein for animal to increase the protein to 22%

The dark brown with cream speckles and the cream with brown speckles I'm quite sure are japenese quail, just different colour variations as we have some similar, for the others don't know if they're all just different coloured Japanese quail or if you have a mixture of types :)

Did they use the hay filled boxes? I heard they would like to lay better in sand, some people put sand in the laying boxes of chicken coop when keeping quail.

The white ones look like Texas A&M's and the brown/speckled are Coturnix.
They are all coturnix ( coturnix japonica). Texas A & Ms are white with a black spot behind the nape of their necks and the brown/speckled look like they are a cross mainly Pharaohs or standard browns. It does look like there are fawn in there two but when the colour variants are all mixed it's hard to specify the variant. They are all basically the same bird, coturnix, bred for different colour variations.

Looks like various coturnix quail. I do know that the ones with spotted chests are female and the ones with red chests are male. The lighter ones im not as sure about.
Wow, some of them suckers are getting big! Great video...I don't know squat about Quail...my grandpa loved eating them. I know Quail is a big deal in the UK in fine dining.
