When you don't shoot Sony everyday you'll have this experience. Sony builds their cameras for multiple applications so they put features that many applications won't need. One big problem with the Fx6 you'll experience, Once you remove the XLR handle you won't have any audio into the camera. For many people that is a show stopper. Enjoyed hearing your experience, can't wait to see the next adventure.
I use a Sony FS5m2 which has a similar body to the FX6, but actually has the one XLR on the body and one of the handle. Tbh.. the only time I've ever needed audio into the body (only) was maybe once. Seriously. I've used this cameras for 4 years now. Going gimbal is the only use case I can see and there is a scratch audio mic on the body so you can still sync via audio in post. Yes.. it would be good to have at least a 1/8 audio jack into the body, but it's not a game changer.

Thanks a lots for this ! I’m shooting my first BTS for a company I like, this helped me a lot for the preparation process 🙏🏾 Keep up the great work Sis !
Thanks for your insights. I had a similar experience with my FX30 when I took it out for a wedding a few weeks ago. I tested it for weeks to make sure everything would go smooth but had a small problem with the AF system during the couple's first dance. Once I was in the comfort of my own home and my heart was no longer racing, I figured it out in a few seconds...😅
Thank you for this! I have a BTS of a Jazz Band next weekend and will use these tips! Totally agree on Sony with their menu and sub menu and Sub_SUB- Hyper Sub Menu. I still forget how to Manually control the Shutter and Apature on my FS5mk1 and I've had it since 2016!
Always been a handheld person but looks like a monopod will save my shoulders and my back for some long days lol sounds you had a fun time with the FX3 and filming the BTS with it! FX3 and FX30 are both good cameras for low key light weight bts shoots!
Same I love me some handheld. But that monopod def did the job handheld couldn’t! The fx3 is great! Especially like you said for low light, quick scene type of BTS shooting!! Paired with a great lens and it’s super versatile for gimbals, handheld, monopod whatever
Brittney thanks so much, I appreciate the monopod suggestion. I'm also thinking of going cageless with just a handle extension, monitor, shotgun and transmitter for lavs. Some friends use a camera strap for added tension and support. I'm curious if you would consider using a harness style strap (on both shoulders rather than around the neck) for continuous doc style shooting, especially when using a heavier lens like the 70-200?
Yea I always go cageless when using the fx3. If I usually use a strap it’s a normal camera strap. But I think a harness strap would make more sense if you can quickly detach it when needed. And it’s better if your going from stabilizer back to sticks and etc.
I love my FX3 lol! Luckily I have not had any of those issues. I do believe the menu can be condensed but when you have time to set up the camera prior to a shoot plus set up the quick menu it works great.
Def need to condense it. I hate that I have to go through a whole menu of a camera to do my job. The bmpcc isn’t like that. Pick it up and do your thing!

@Britt - just in line with what the first commenter said; how do you feel in such circumstances where they highlight your race or gender rather than highlighting the quality of content and work of the creator? Cause while the original commenter probably meant well, to me the presumption is “black people” do not make content or if they so wish to do so, they are hindered by a lack of opportunity? I’m interested to hear your take on that.
@@EJNakamuraMy comment is simply expressing gratitude to see someone who looks like me making content in film :). Two things can be true at once. She also made a great video, which I said as well. Her making a great video is not connected to her race nor her gender, it’s simply the product of her putting in work to something she loves! I know you said my comment *probably* meant well but I still felt the need to reply. Because probably implies there was a chance I meant something completely different than what my comment said. As a black creator myself, and from my experience with other black people in any field it does suck when people highlight race for the wrong reasons. Representation however is not the wrong reason to highlight race. An example that is frustrating however is platforms highlighting black creators in a black category, instead of just including black creators when they highlight other creators! This sucks because these platforms are usually just trying to act like they care about diversity. While never addressing real issues that actually affect minority creators on platform. However we are not a monolith and not every black person feels the same. There is no presumption for me that black people don’t create content in film, but we are a minority in the population, therefore there is going to be less film content from black creators. Representation is not simply about being excited to see someone that looks like you doing something you want to do. There are very practical reasons as well which would be a lot to dive into. But one big example for me in the film category is lighting. When looking at lighting tutorials I love seeing black actors in them. This is because it gives me a more accurate sense of how lighting is going to look on me, or some of my friends! Hopefully this gives some insight into this topic from my perspective.
@@EJNakamura I understand exactly what he meant. I don't think he meant black people don't make content but on youtube you don't see many black creators especially black women on here making filmmaking content so it's refreshing to see. It's why I started my channel. As a black women I didn't see black women creating this type of content and unfortunately that's how hollywood is. So I don't mind it at all. I just make sure my work backs it up. I think if the quality of my content wasn't' there I wouldn't be where I am on youtube. Most companies never sponsor black women, most companies don't even have black women in their promotional videos. How often have you seen black women content creators that focus on filmmaking on RUclips? And what's that ratio with other counterparts?
this my first time seeing one of your vids but it kind of felt like one of those roundtable / panel discussions, its nice hearing real industry experiences and not *not sponsored by sony* branded content lol. appreciate you miss and subbing !!
Really depends on who the company is but for what I do I usually get paid union rates and if it’s not a union job i try to stay close to union prices and make sure I add in a kit fee as well. But it depends on the project and what’s needed.
Love the video!! I’m a Sony FX3 shooter here in Atlanta and wanted to know how to get BTS gigs on these top movie productions or tv shows…how would I go about doing that and getting my first gig? And do they already have a budget for you that they told you per day or do you tell them you rate per day to shoot Bts??
Hey! So I started doing friends BTS on their films and photo shoots to have work to show and then I got hired to do BTS for commercials. From there just putting my work out and the opportunity to do films presented itself and they saw my previous work. When it comes to budget it really depends on the job. The Ann Hathaway project was union based so I got paid union the union rate. The women king was not union since it was in another country so I was able to talk to my mentor and gave a good daily rate mixed with my kit fee.
I used the fx3 as a Bcam paired with fx9 and fx3 is a beastttttt especially being able to crank the iso high as hell on fx3 they thought the fx3 throughly I highly recommend everyone to rent and try it out
Good stuff! I was recently asked to shoot behind the scenes of a production. I know how to shoot and have Ninja like abilities, but I did have questions about set etiquette. Thanks for that! Also, what kind of in-camera decisions did you make? Did you shoot in log so that the DIT can have flexibility in editing?
So normally the client gives me specific specs of what they want. Since most times I don’t edit the footage. So it all Depends on what they want. But if I’m editing it myself I do slog and use my monitor just to make sure everything is good.
I would love to shoot some bts of you shooting...I am a sony user as well...I believe the issues you have experineced once you understand the sony menu you will be able to fix them on the fly...it was my issue as well When i first got my sony...Awesome video man would love to collab some day
Have you looked into using Catalyst Browse to stabilize your footage? You might not even need the monopod if you like the way it stabilizes. As someone who shoots Canon for photography, I'm getting really tempted by some of these Sony bodies. I feel like an fx30 would be a good start to see if I like working with my adapted lenses.
I haven’t. I don’t really use the monopod for stabilization and more for it being professional on set when doing a standup and also, for the shots where I need to be hidden or those hard to get shots.
So awesome. Thanks for sharing all of this. I just bought a Panasonic S5 to go along with my Sony camera, and now you got me spending money on a mono pod. :-) Really awesome work, I enjoy your channel a lot. And I so agree with you that there’s so much stuff in a Sony menu that is not really necessary to be there, but I guess they’re trying to cover any possibility of everything. :-) My S5 is kind of feature packed as well, but it just feels much more straight ahead to me. Thanks again, looking forward to more.
Incredible content! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for all the advice. It's gonna be helping a lot on the set! I'm a beginner filmmaker from Brazil!
Thank you for your 🔥videos! My company is being asked to record digital content on a more regular basis and your content is incredibly helpful. What type of monopod do you use?
Honestly I don’t remember and I left it in Atlanta but it was the best Tripod ever lol. Check out Cayer monopods. I would recommend getting one with feet.
The real problem with Sony FX3 is Noise Reduction. It messes up a lot of things on higher ISOs and there is no way to turn it off. This is what makes the FX6 a great option since you can turn off NR! Another deal breaker is the RAW output. The ProRes Raw is 12 bit on Ninja V against what Sony advertised i.e. 16 bit. And, after going through all the hassle of recording RAW signal you don't get controls like White Balance, ISO and even Exposure. On the other hand, every camera which records Black Magic Raw externally, will give you all these options. But, that auto focus is stellar. If you are a solo shooter, you cannot go wrong with Sony AF. I think it would stick to even the fastest moving subjects not to mention the Eye detect. As a solo shooter, this frees your mind and lets you focus (no pun intended) on other things like framing, lighting (yes, you need to light properly even if it's a low light miracle) directing your subject, audio and a million other things, which can go wrong if you are alone. The problem is as imagemakers even a frame out of focus would dent your image and Sony takes care of that. Cameras like FX3 help you make money and that's where it's a great tool.
Yep that’s the only reason why I recommend the fx3. As a BTS cam op, I’m always a solo shooter so having great low light, a good audio system, and autofocus makes for a really good camera! Otherwise I love my bmpcc.
EPK means electronic press kit, it’s a compilation of material to promote a film or TV project, a new album by a band, or an artist's work. So like interviews from the cast and crew talking about the film. They use that to promote the film. They did a bunch of EPK stuff for the women king
Outstanding video with some great BTS tips! I’m am very excited for the opportunities that you have recently had and pray that they open even more doors for you! PS. GET THE FX6. Just bought one for my production company and absolutely love it! We too are new to the Sony Ecosystem, but it has been a smooth transition and we are looking at purchasing a second FX6. Do it!!!
Where are you based? Those are some really cool gigs you got...Sony menu sucks for real...I feel like I need to take a class before shooting with it again...for now it's canon and Blackmagic for me for now
Brittney, enjoyed the video! I’m unsure because I am a new follower to your channel, but could you make a video on how you color grade your own videos? I noticed you have such cool tones that make you pop out when speaking. I genuinely enjoyed watching this all the way. Thank you!
Hey!! I do have a couple videos that show how I color grade but I can make an updated one since I now use a different camera for my RUclips videos! And welcome!
i honestly think with more time, you get used to the camera's functionality, and then you'll be able to do ur work just like with ur bm cameras. They're both great.
I have not used the FX3, but i do have the FX6. There is a hard "hold" button on it, so you can definitely turn the feature off easily. Agree that Sony includes wayyyy too many options in the menus. Great if you need all that. But the FX6 has dual menus, one which is a simplified "quick" version which has the essentials only. And the FX6 is really not that big or heavy. I think you'd like the FX6 more. Fortunately they're coming back into stock now.
I remember you from you blackmagic and sony video. Since then the FX30 has launched, I think it's a great camera to get a taste of advanced Sony workflow without breaking the bank!! Great to see you again. It's funny I had the same experience when using the Black Magic. I could not find why it would not record on RAW and it was the lens adaptor? never did find the false color.
Thank you!! Yea I love false color on my bmpcc. But I hate what happened to the camera! I have the fx3 so I’ve been adapting the Sony workflow for a while. Also because I use to have the a7iii.
Normally because this is a union role I would turn in footage. You can’t do multiple roles with union jobs. For non union jobs sometimes they hire me to edit as well which I like!
First thank you for sharing your experience. And thank you for sharing your thougts about the FX3. I wasn't aware of these problem tho. I always hear or read about a great camera blablabla, but it looks like these have some bad perks too! Not so reliable for critical work like your BTS
It’s great for BTS but now I def have to be mindful of those things! I do think the fx6 may be my next camera tho especially if I actually go into the union as a BTS cam op! However I do love the bmpcc as well. So I’m still figuring out what I want to do next!
Was waiting for this video. Thanks for all the information and the great tips. Also, just myself, I can't see myself leaving my Gh5s' behind to start using something else permanently, unless it's a straight cinema cam like a fx6.
WOW. One of the BEST, most informative, actual real world tips that I have ever seen from someone on YT that talks about video stuff. This was GREAT! I have started to dabble a little in the world of BTS stuff for TV work and I have come across some of these moments and your tips and insights are spot on. I will def. use them - sorry you had issues with the FX3 - it is my work horse I have never seen it lock up like that or stop recording - that's really rare IMO, maybe a faulty unit?? Did you ever figure out why it locked up? I hope that never happens to me! New SUB btw! Thanks for this video!
I didn’t figure out why but a lot of it did happen with the rented fx3. I’ve never had those issues with my personal fx3 so I’m blaming the rental lol. But thank you sooooo much!!!
An electronic press kit, is a compilation of material to promote a film or TV project, a new album by a band, or an artist's work. So most films do EPKa to promote the film. The women king did one with ETOnline.
Congratulations @Britney great job. My question is shooting bts and with what they are willing to pay could you build a career out if that? I shot bts for a movie here in LA for a friend and then others started calling for me to come do same for free. While it was fun and a good experience for me I had to decline. They make it sound like it’s exposure to get your foot in the door but I have mouths to feed I can’t be spending a couple of days and not getting paid. Any tip, advice or-suggestions? Thanks
Hey I hope all is well and your holiday is going fine. I recently stumbled on your RUclips and IG account and I think your work is amazing. I really like the knowledge and work ethic you have. My buddy Rommel and I have a podcast for creatives and in January will be recording our 3rd season. We would love to have you as a guest. I definitely look forward to hearing from you. 🎥
Hey Britt so dope got to do this BTS proj as well as Woman King. That was clutch they let you go into sound board on set to get best sound quality. By way I follow ya on IG I'm lpitts_cre8 Hate that had those problems with FX3 seemed a bit buggy. As far as battery are you able to run a V-Mount through a V-Mount plate? I know the FX3 is small in body size though. I use ZCAM E2-M4 with 154W battery it lasts me multiple shoots.
I wouldn’t want to have a v-mount setup because what I like about the fx3 is the small size. Especially for BTS work. Otherwise I can use my bmpcc if I need a bigger setup. So I try to stay away from the v mount stuff.
FINALLY! It’s so good to see one of our black women in this business. Great job sis!👍🏿

This is because it gives me a more accurate sense of how lighting is going to look on me, or some of my friends! Hopefully this gives some insight into this topic from my perspective.
@@BrittneyJanaeof course!
Great rundown and congrats on the recent work
Thank you!
Great info! Thanks! Can you tell ne what union covers you that you are trying to get into???
It would be Local 600. I would go in as a Camera Operator
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing!
this my first time seeing one of your vids but it kind of felt like one of those roundtable / panel discussions, its nice hearing real industry experiences and not *not sponsored by sony* branded content lol. appreciate you miss and subbing !!
Thank you so much!!!
welcome back brittney .. we missed you
Thank you so much! The goal is to come back full force next year!
@@BrittneyJanae i hope so 😍
What a title, keep up the amazing work. Stand up!!!
Thank you!!
What’s a good rate, for BTS on Film sets with 6-8 hour days
Really depends on who the company is but for what I do I usually get paid union rates and if it’s not a union job i try to stay close to union prices and make sure I add in a kit fee as well. But it depends on the project and what’s needed.
Great break down Sis! Thank Ya
Yesss come on over to the Sony family! Welcome to the dark side lol
Lol not there just yet!
This is epic! I love to see us doing big things! Great video too. Makes me wanna step my game up. Subbed... ✌🏾🚀
Amazing story and you have sooo positive vibes. Keep great work!
Thank you so much!
I used the fx3 as a Bcam paired with fx9 and fx3 is a beastttttt especially being able to crank the iso high as hell on fx3 they thought the fx3 throughly I highly recommend everyone to rent and try it out
I agree with this!!!
@@BrittneyJanae Awesome! Thank you!
Good stuff 👍🏽

I would love to shoot some bts of you shooting...I am a sony user as well...I believe the issues you have experineced once you understand the sony menu you will be able to fix them on the fly...it was my issue as well When i first got my sony...Awesome video man would love to collab some day
I’ve always had a Sony, I will just never be a fan of their menu setting.
Thank you!!! Let me know how the S5 treats you!
@@BrittneyJanae so far so good. 😏🎥
yes ma’am! you just confirmed that the manfrotto monopod is the way to go for shooting on the fly.
Yes ma’am get that monopod!
What Kind of lens caps are those ?
Incredible content!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for all the advice. It's gonna be helping a lot on the set!
I'm a beginner filmmaker from Brazil!
thank you
The Lenses are very good :) very cool Video
I agree with everyone here. You should’ve gone with the FX6! It removed all the barriers you talked about with the FX3
My money went with the fx3. Lol. But you can def buy me an fx6!!!!! I would love that haha
Thanks
you got a new Subscriber :D
Thank you!!
Great information 👍
Thank you.
Sounds like you are an amazing person 😀
Thank you!!
What's good! This is the first video on your channel I've come across. I'm curious what you mean when you say, "EPK"
Do it!!!
Thank you!! Idk if I’m ready to leave the bmpcc life but hopefully I can figure it out soon!
Where are you based? Those are some really cool gigs you got...Sony menu sucks for real...I feel like I need to take a class before shooting with it again...for now it's canon and Blackmagic for me for now
I’m based in Los Angeles. I hate Sonys menu! A lot of things in it don’t really need to be in it!
Are both the crew and cast sound recorded directly into the camera?
Yea both are recorded directly into the camera. I did left and right channels with the audio handle.
@@BrittneyJanaehow do you connect it to the mixer?
Good all on what colors not to wear
Brittney, enjoyed the video! I’m unsure because I am a new follower to your channel, but could you make a video on how you color grade your own videos? I noticed you have such cool tones that make you pop out when speaking. I genuinely enjoyed watching this all the way. Thank you!
Hey!! I do have a couple videos that show how I color grade but I can make an updated one since I now use a different camera for my RUclips videos! And welcome!
@@BrittneyJanae Thank you!
i honestly think with more time, you get used to the camera's functionality, and then you'll be able to do ur work just like with ur bm cameras. They're both great.
I e had the fx3 for a while but I still prefer my bmpcc image. It’s just an easier camera to me
I have not used the FX3, but i do have the FX6.
Thank you! Yes I think I would too honestly! I'm going to be renting them for work and seeing how I like them!
FX6 is the move.
I’m scared to leave the blackmagic ecosystem! Their image is just so beautiful!
Nice video as always. Which camera and lens did you film this video with?
I used my canon R with the sigma 18-35mm
How you edit your audio, your voice so clear?
Thank you! It’s the mic I use!
You’re great.
Great info! Do you also edit your own work? Or do you just turn the footage and sound over to a production rep?
I still think bmpcc image is better but Sony is great for documentary work! I love the fx6 for its ergonomics
Awesome content 👏.
Thank you!
Go Britney - putting down the truth bombs!
canon?!
What do you mean by canon?
What was this vid shot on? Skin tone was gorgeous!
Thank you! It was shot on my Canon EOS R. I like the skin tones on the canon so much better so I use it for youtube videos!
@@BrittneyJanae Canon skin tones, DUH!
what does EPK stand for?
Thanks
@@BrittneyJanae Thank you for the explanation that’s definitely something didn’t know before now
