- ☸️ Welcome to the video" Teaching of Buddha: 7 Types of Wives For A Man"
In this video we will learn about the topic of wives. In the Anguttara Nikaya, chapter Wives, the Buddha taught that there are 7 types of wives including bad wives and good wives. He also taught that bad wives, when they die, will fall into miserable lands, and good wives, when they die, will be reborn in good places. Let's take a closer look at the content of the sutra.
In the morning, the Buddha put on his robes, took his bowl and robe and went to the house of homeowner Anathapindika, a famous layperson in Buddhism who offered his garden to the Buddha's sangha as a residence. When arriving at homeowner Anathapindika's house, the Buddha heard people talking loudly to each other, and asked homeowner Anathapindika, why there were people talking loudly to each other. Homeowner Anathapindika replied that, it was his daughter-in-law named Sujatà. She comes from a rich family, so she disobeys her mother-in-law, disobeys her father-in-law, and disobeys her husband. The Buddha immediately called Sujatà, and taught her that, there are 7 types of wives for a man.
First, the wife is like a murderer
The Buddha taught wives with tainted minds, without compassion, interested in other men, contemptuous of their husbands, bribed with money, and fond of killing others. Such wives are called "the wife is like a murderer".
Second, the wife is like a thief
The Buddha taught wives who waste their husband's property, and steal his money, even if it is a small amount. Such wives are called "the wife is like a thief".
Third, the wife is like the owner
The Buddha taught wives who are lazy, do not like to work but eat a lot, say unpleasant and cruel words, or command and suppress their husband's efforts. Such wives are called the wife is like the owner
Fourth, the wife is like a mother
Buddha taught that wives are compassionate, love everyone, take care of their husbands like a mother takes care of her children, and preserve her husband's property. Such wives are called "the wife is like a mother".
Fifth, the wife is like a sister
The Buddha taught that wives respect and serve their husbands like a sister, and are ashamed of their wrong actions. Such wives are called "the wife is like a sister"
Sixth, the wife is like a friend
The Buddha taught that wives who, when they see their husbands, are always happy and cheerful, like a friend they have met after a long time, are loyal, and were born into a virtuous family. Such wives are called "the wife is like a friend".
Seventh, the wife is like a servant
The Buddha taught that wives whose minds are always peaceful, without hatred, without resentment or anger, are patient with their husbands, and obey their husband's words. Such wives are called "the wife is like a servant".
Buddha taught that the 3 types of bad wives are: wives like murderers, wives like thieves, and wives like owners, when they die, will be reborn in the evil realm. And the 4 types of good wives are wives like mothers, wives like sisters, wives like friends and wives like servants, when they die, will be reborn in a good realm. After the Buddha finished preaching, he asked Sujatà what kind of wife she was? . Sujatà replied that, from now on the Buddha should consider her as, "the wife is like a servant".
Through the last sutta, we can see that although family life today, has many changes compared to 2500 years ago, the Buddha's teachings are still valid today. Hopefully the Buddha's teachings will help us have a happy and peaceful family life. Thank you for watching this video and see you in the next video.
