    The practice of mindfulness is only necessary to improve the quality of shamatha. Satipatthana-mindfulness itself is an auxiliary practice. The essence of the Buddha's teaching is the practice of shamatha, that is, the state of a collected, clear mind without any distractions, including thoughts.
