I hadn't considered the Tarkin lighting issue at all before, but it makes perfect sense with the example yall gave, the lighting really makes an enormous difference.
the more i see the actor who performed pre-vfx-Tarkin the more i'm convinced they absolutely should've had him just be the recast Tarkin, like with Mon Mothma.
It's a repeated pattern with Disney. Even with Luke they had such a good doppleganger and they chose the CGI/deepfake route. I wouldn't be surprised if Gareth revealed that he'd prefer a replacement but they told him to go with CGI instead. Smells to me like how a clueless suit would think. "If we can just use the original actor let's just do that!" with zero idea of how hard it is or the moral implications and the like. I wish non-artists were not part of these creative decisions, except for accountants to keep them in check.
@@ishaan863nobody else is gonna bring the essence of Luke the way Mark Hamill does. He was on set for those scenes and was mimicked by the body double. He’s been Luke for over 40 years, it would be EXTREMELY difficult to just accept a new face playing him, especially since he plays both the young AND old versions of Luke in canon. They tried the recast route with Han Solo and we saw how well that turned out… first flop in Star Wars history. The progression of the technology from Mando S2 to Boba was night and day, and it’s only gonna get better

One of the things I loved about the design in Gareth's Godzilla was how cleverly he traded off two things. On one hand, Godzilla needed to be the largest he'd ever been, almost like a mobile mountain and suitably slow, but to balance that this Godzilla had more lateral rotation than he'd ever had. You see that in the shot where he's demonstrating the use of the rooftops to get scale and then panning up; each segment of Godzilla's body is smoothly rotating, almost snake-like. It's a great way to balance the issues introduced by the new scale, but also a way to defeat the character's traditional stiffness due to the old rubber suit.
Please react to the movie "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971). Except for using the magic-prism from Mary Poppins, to integrate real life humans into animated scenes (and dancing weightless under the sea), there are also some decent shots at the last act of the movie, with an army of self moving (empty) knight armors fighting an amazed platoon of WWII German soldiers.
I haven't watched that movie in decades, but I still have a vivid memory of one of the suits of armour pulling off its boot and pouring out all the bullets. What a special film that was.
this guy is such an inspiring moviemaker. not only is he creative and telented but also very down to earth. he seems like the kind of guy who would try to help you achieve your vision and not just laugh at it and ignore you.
I don't know about the second part. Seems to me like he would neither laugh at your vision or help you achieve it, he just wouldn't give much of a shit about it. He's more the "maniacally working at achieving his own vision" type of guy.
While the Tarkin effect took me out of the movie (sadly), Rogue One remains my favorite SW film since the original trilogy. That and Godzilla are absolute masterpieces. I know some people wanted more Kaiju battles in Godzilla, but for me the movie was one long build up to an incredible final showdown and I loved every second of it.
Gareth Edwards has a special place in my heart for giving us Rogue One and Legendary's Goodzilla. So glad he's a repeat guest. Also, LOVED the Express VPN ad.

Godzilla‘s first use of the flame breath is one of the coolest memories I have of cinema. 40 years of being a fan, despite how comical it has always looked and the first time we get it looking incredible is that amazing shot…. Talk about creating goosebumps in the theater, what an understatement.
@CobbleBompster aw dude....it was literally a cartoon drawing on a guy in a rubber suit. Some of the movies had it so faint it looked like fog. Got a little better after 2000 but until Garrett's Godzilla and Shin, it was so busted....
I absolutely love the way Gareth Edwards composes a shot. The way he filmed Godzilla was masterful. He gave Godzilla a scale in a way the follow-ups just don't and they don't hit as hard in my opinion. I'm excited to see where he goes next. *cough* sleeper pick for a Bond movie, maybe?
Gareth Edwards is a genius when it comes to vfx, but I wish producers would pair him with a similarly wise screenwriter, because his worlds suffer from the nonsensical stuff the characters do, or that happens. There's gotta be a happy compromise between having the freedom to add boats in trees etc when appropriate, and following a tight narrative frame with the kinks worked out, so it doesn't break our immersion. It's hard to justify a scuba team stealthily emerging from the water when there's a giant fucking blue beam directly behind them, as in The Creator, for just one example. The man is a visual wizard though, with an incredible work ethic and a deep knowledge about how to achieve the desired look, and that deserves massive respect. I hope he (well, they, cos he had a team for The Creator) gets that VFX Oscar, and that Hollywood then pairs him with one of those (increasingly rare) amazing screenwriters.
Yeah it's rather evident. Rogue One was a smash hit because the script was so tight and well written, and I imagine most of it had to do with Tony Gilroy. No offense to Chris Weitz but he just can't carry it. We need master level screenplay to pair with Gareth and it'll end up glorious.
I think a happy medium might be to give him a tight, polished screenplay but give him the freedom to shoot it the way he wants. Clearly he knows his visuals so let him cook in that department

Maybe that story would've worked but when you watch it back to back with Andor the difference in quality is pretty jarring. I care about the characters in Andor. I couldn't tell you a thing about anyone in Rogue One. Cassian doesn't even feel like the same guy. I know his character changes but something just doesn't connect
@@KABOBkabob Rogue One didn't have time to develop all characters, but all of them were interesting to me. It feels like any one of them could get a spin off like Andor. I think the direction was okay, and not shading Gareth Edwards but he is first and foremost a visual artist and not (yet) a great film director. That's why I agreed with the OP that he really needed better screen writers to help him.

Do you think The Creator is a good movie? VFX was remarkable with that budget but everything else is mediocre at best. He's probably genius VFX supervisor but that doesn't make you an auteur.

That two minute Darth Vader sequence at the end of Rogue One is one of the most badass I've ever seen not just on Star Wars but on any film. This guy is insane!
Gareth has inspired me for years, still blows my mind what he did on the Genghis BBC show. Monsters is one of my favourite movies too, so understated yet epic at the same time, exploring character depth like no one dares to in Hollywood. Thanks for this interview, it's got all my creative juices flowing again.
I think the cgi in the newest movies are amazing. What they really need is a good story with characters who are more than just “famous actor in a leather jacket”

I think that the amazon prime show 'tales from the loop', based on the artwork of Simon Stålenhag, deserves a look. Full of great VFX and CG stuff that look fully part of the shots they're in.
Godzilla 2014 still is the best one. The scale and wonder that was achieved was amazing. The airport shot is still great. When Godzilla stomps, its so cool.
All these movies are full of CGI that are so clearly CGI that nothing seems of any consequence, no suspension of disbelief. These movies are nothing. There's not a second where I can immerse myself in the movie.

Nice one Corridor Crew! Gareth Edwards has truly mastered the art of visual effects (in his bedroom), using it as a tool to tell compelling stories rather than letting it overshadow the narrative. His ability to find creative workarounds and prioritize the story is both inspiring and commendable. By focusing on the heart of the story, Edwards has shown us that VFX is not just about spectacle, but rather a means to enhance and deepen our emotional connection to the characters and the world they inhabit. Bravo
Gareth is absolutely one of the directors that is most needed in Hollywood right now… there are just a handful of geniuses and creative innovators who know how to do things differently in way that works for mainstream audiences. He does things in an original and super creative way, but he also understands what people want to see and what makes something feel awesome or impactful. I really hope he gets more opportunities to make some big movies again! Same with Jordan Vogt-Robert’s. I just rewatched Kong Skull Island and I forget how gorgeous that movie is! Every shot is like a poster, and you can feel the influences from anime, comics, classic Hollywood and more… easily the best looking Monsterverse movies are the ones Jordan and Gareth made. They’re like paintings come to life. We need more of that! Spectacle and action is fun, but it’s on a whole other level when it looks great as a still frame.
I would kill for another Gareth Edward’s type take on Godzilla. The groundedness and the scale is the only thing that’s missing from the wacky monster verse now
Gareth is a truly underrated director. He has incredible technical skills but the characters in the movies are never lost. He really knows how to keep the balance of spectacle and heart, which is essential.

I like how Gareth talks about CGI with the giants like ILM being magic. Like it captured part of the magic he remembered at the soul of these films in the creative process. I shoot a lot of 35mm and it’s one of the reasons I still prefer using a lab over developing myself, keeps some magic in the creative process

It just clicked for me, now I get why I like Rogue One so much. Apparently I’m a Gareth film fan, I mean Monsters was great. For me it had that District 9 type of cinematography. Now I know where that visceral style from Rogue One comes from! 👏🏼
I would love to see you guys react and discuss various driving scenes. I just rewatched Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and never noticed how bad the cg looks outside of the van as Tom Cruise drives away from the initial attack. It reminded me of old rear projection techniques, but with cg. Cars seem to just appear in and out of nowhere. I always appreciate when filmmakers take extra time tying the actors to the moving backgrounds. I would love to see more examples of good and bad driving scenes. The old James Bond films have some janky rear projection. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood really sells that Brad Pitt is driving around L.A.
I have just rewatched the War of The World scene because of your comment, I’m sorry but the exterior environment makes sense if you pay attention to it. Surely the lighting would look better if they had the Volume available back then , but in my opinion it holds up really well.

Gareth Edwards just strikes me as a sheer powerforce of creativity. The simplicity of going to a town and asking the locals, "whatcha got that's weird?" - and using that as a springboard ... This man thinks differently and I admire him.

To a paid YT premium sub now, it should seem weird sponsored videos that have B+rool style cutaways are doing such a thing considering it's a channel that was never ad-pocalypsed and still receive YT ad-revenue. After being forced into going ad-free, it's not something I personally appreciate. I get it, I do. But ad-pocalypse is what prompted people to get sponsored and do ads within their videos. That isn't the case for "controversy-free" content.
I feel the same, when they fight amongst the buildings in the end shows their true scale, Godzilla vs Mech Godzilla was nice but not as fun as the 2014 movie!

@CobbleBompster aw dude....it was literally a cartoon drawing on a guy in a rubber suit. Some of the movies had it so faint it looked like fog. Got a little better after 2000 but until Garrett's Godzilla and Shin, it was so busted....
I absolutely love the way Gareth Edwards composes a shot. The way he filmed Godzilla was masterful. He gave Godzilla a scale in a way the follow-ups just don't and they don't hit as hard in my opinion. I'm excited to see where he goes next.

Gareth Edwards is a genius when it comes to vfx, but I wish producers would pair him with a similarly wise screenwriter, because his worlds suffer from the nonsensical stuff the characters do, or that happens. There's gotta be a happy compromise between having the freedom to add boats in trees etc when appropriate, and following a tight narrative frame with the kinks worked out, so it doesn't break our immersion. It's hard to justify a scuba team stealthily emerging from the water when there's a giant fucking blue beam directly behind them, as in The Creator, for just one example. The man is a visual wizard though, with an incredible work ethic and a deep knowledge about how to achieve the desired look, and that deserves massive respect. I hope he (well, they, cos he had a team for The Creator) gets that VFX Oscar, and that Hollywood then pairs him with one of those (increasingly rare) amazing screenwriters.
Yeah it's rather evident. Rogue One was a smash hit because the script was so tight and well written, and I imagine most of it had to do with Tony Gilroy. No offense to Chris Weitz but he just can't carry it. We need master level screenplay to pair with Gareth and it'll end up glorious.
I think a happy medium might be to give him a tight, polished screenplay but give him the freedom to shoot it the way he wants. Clearly he knows his visuals so let him cook in that department
@@zxbc1unfortunately the direction and resulting performances in Rogue One let the whole thing down. Maybe that story would've worked but when you watch it back to back with Andor the difference in quality is pretty jarring. I care about the characters in Andor. I couldn't tell you a thing about anyone in Rogue One. Cassian doesn't even feel like the same guy. I know his character changes but something just doesn't connect
@@KABOBkabob Rogue One didn't have time to develop all characters, but all of them were interesting to me. It feels like any one of them could get a spin off like Andor. I think the direction was okay, and not shading Gareth Edwards but he is first and foremost a visual artist and not (yet) a great film director. That's why I agreed with the OP that he really needed better screen writers to help him.

So glad to see Gareth Edwards hard work and career finally get some of the praise it truly deserves!! Been a fan since the Monsters days. Studios need to keep giving him all the budget and control he wants and don’t interfere with the auteur.
Do you think The Creator is a good movie? VFX was remarkable with that budget but everything else is mediocre at best. He's probably genius VFX supervisor but that doesn't make you an auteur.

Gareth has inspired me for years, still blows my mind what he did on the Genghis BBC show. Monsters is one of my favourite movies too, so understated yet epic at the same time, exploring character depth like no one dares to in Hollywood.

I think that the amazon prime show 'tales from the loop', based on the artwork of Simon Stålenhag, deserves a look. Full of great VFX and CG stuff that look fully part of the shots they're in.
Rogue One and Godzilla 2014 are the Films that first made me aware of Gareth Edwards and I do not regret that being the case

Godzilla 2014 still is the best one. The scale and wonder that was achieved was amazing. The airport shot is still great. When Godzilla stomps, its so cool.
G2014 is easily the best one. None of the others has the same sense of awesomeness, scale and the mythical feel to the monsters.
As a VFX artist myself I respect Gareth more and more for the work he has done.

All these movies are full of CGI that are so clearly CGI that nothing seems of any consequence, no suspension of disbelief. These movies are nothing. There's not a second where I can immerse myself in the movie.

Gareth is absolutely one of the directors that is most needed in Hollywood right now… there are just a handful of geniuses and creative innovators who know how to do things differently in way that works for mainstream audiences. He does things in an original and super creative way, but he also understands what people want to see and what makes something feel awesome or impactful.
I really hope he gets more opportunities to make some big movies again!
Same with Jordan Vogt-Robert’s. I just rewatched Kong Skull Island and I forget how gorgeous that movie is! Every shot is like a poster, and you can feel the influences from anime, comics, classic Hollywood and more… easily the best looking Monsterverse movies are the ones Jordan and Gareth made. They’re like paintings come to life. We need more of that! Spectacle and action is fun, but it’s on a whole other level when it looks great as a still frame.
I love how the sponser segments are entertaining and make me want to watch them.

As far as great director/composer partnerships go, I was pleasantly surprised by Gareth Edwards and Michael Giacchino for Rogue One
Gareth is a truly underrated director. He has incredible technical skills but the characters in the movies are never lost. He really knows how to keep the balance of spectacle and heart, which is essential.

I like how Gareth talks about CGI with the giants like ILM being magic. Like it captured part of the magic he remembered at the soul of these films in the creative process.
I shoot a lot of 35mm and it’s one of the reasons I still prefer using a lab over developing myself, keeps some magic in the creative process

I would love to see you guys react and discuss various driving scenes. I just rewatched Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and never noticed how bad the cg looks outside of the van as Tom Cruise drives away from the initial attack. It reminded me of old rear projection techniques, but with cg. Cars seem to just appear in and out of nowhere.
I always appreciate when filmmakers take extra time tying the actors to the moving backgrounds. I would love to see more examples of good and bad driving scenes.
The old James Bond films have some janky rear projection. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood really sells that Brad Pitt is driving around L.A.
I have just rewatched the War of The World scene because of your comment, I’m sorry but the exterior environment makes sense if you pay attention to it. Surely the lighting would look better if they had the Volume available back then , but in my opinion it holds up really well.

Gareth Edwards just strikes me as a sheer powerforce of creativity. The simplicity of going to a town and asking the locals, "whatcha got that's weird?" - and using that as a springboard ... This man thinks differently and I admire him.
You guys should react to "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963). It is an excellent example of miniatures, stop motion, classic film effects, and even slow motion, miniature water!

To a paid YT premium sub now, it should seem weird sponsored videos that have B+rool style cutaways are doing such a thing considering it's a channel that was never ad-pocalypsed and still receive YT ad-revenue. After being forced into going ad-free, it's not something I personally appreciate. I get it, I do. But ad-pocalypse is what prompted people to get sponsored and do ads within their videos. That isn't the case for "controversy-free" content.

I feel the same, when they fight amongst the buildings in the end shows their true scale, Godzilla vs Mech Godzilla was nice but not as fun as the 2014 movie!

These VFX react with Gareth Edwards have the best reaction from the Corridor Crew, from awe, to shock, to utter disgust at how this guy is doing these things. Gareth is the most like Corridor Crew, using guerrilla filming techniques, creating the VFX himself, using commercially available program, in his bedroom. His basically a Saitama level Corridor Crew.
