Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's ambitious plan to provide free meals to 82 million school-aged children and pregnant women by 2029, was quietly launched on January 6, 2025. While praised for its potential economic benefits, ability to boost school enrolment and long-term improvement of human capital, the initiative has also faced scepticism about its sustainability. Critics say the programme’s initial budget of 71 trillion rupiah (US$4.4 billion) and long-term funding needs may put a heavy burden on the country’s fragile finances. There are also concerns the programme may divert investments from other critical areas such as infrastructure.

Those children will only become workers in a decade's time. But the cost is upfront. And in Indonesia, there is ample demand for manual labourers, where child stunting does not impact their employability as significantly compared to white-collar office work.

A similar scheme has been implemented in Tamilnadu, a state in South India for almost 60 years. But it is for the students in government schools who are basically from the economically weaker section. The scheme has been upscaled recently to include breakfast also for these students. This should be looked as an investment rather than as an expense.

@@dramas9509 I've already using lower lower prices for each items to consider that a catering business can get cuts for buying the raw materials in bulk. You wouldn't get an egg for 2,5K rupiah in Bekasi in any warung makan (small scale cheap resto). That's why my wife would run as far as she could from the program. She know it will full with audits, and each of them will ask for bribery for not giving you intentional malicious false reporting. The margin is already too thin to ever entertain those pesky auditors. The auditors who know nothing will always thought that we landed up a gold mine with this free lunch contract will not backed up without getting something from the auditees.

I think the govt should focus the budget on improving living standards and creating more job opportunities, thereby making healthy food more accessible and affordable for everyone, hence stunting issue can be tackled.

I think this program feels too forced. It would be better to address the core problem of stunting, which is rooted in economic issues. Efforts should focus on creating manufacturing industries to increase employment, ensuring equitable development, raising teacher salaries to a decent level, and addressing urgent environmental issues like waste management and pollution

Sudahlah... Buat BAYAR HUTANG NEGARA SAJA !!!!... kami masih mampu memberi anak kami makan, cuma makan siang sepiring saja.

Maaf, saya bukan termasuk anak kekurangan gizi krn ortu kami terbilang mampu. Wlwpun 9 bersaudara kami semua lulus sarjana. Jangan hanya krn komen utk mementingkan hutang negara anda mengatakan bhw seseorang kurang gizi. Dimana kolerasinya coba. Ada bbrp hal yg harus dipertimbangkan dlm memberikan makan gratis, hitung jumlah seluruh siswa, brp bnyk sekolah yg masuk kategori makan gratis, sumber dana, sampai kapan, apakah dari sabang sampai merauke, dari pelosok desa hingga kota besar. Okelah jika semua sdh direncanakan, tp dampak pd perekonomian ke depannya, jgnkan menunggu 5 thn, 1 thn ke depan belum tentu berjalan mulus

@@roydeeyaa6239 Anda seriusan nanya dimana kolerasinya?
Memang kenapa Hutang negara kita? Anda paham tentang hutang negara? Paham External Debt dan Internal debt? Debt to GDP ratio?

the worst project ever in Indonesian Prabowo need 70 Trilions to support this program, but he cut 300 Trilions from all Government Budget in Indonesia. This budget not only to support those wasteful project, but also incompetent and fat structure of his cabinet.
In the long term, it will trigger the low Economic Growth, or even worse, recession most likely will happen.

Indonesians who are against this program should be ashamed of calling themselves Indonesians. The scheme for it may not be perfect ofc, but going against the very concept of a government feeding their young is pretty much saying that they shouldn't care about the future of this country at all
People like these should be ashamed of voting on our elections in the first place, how can you vote for officials who would make the country better when you don't even care whether the young eats healthy or not? It's impossible

Pupils have no choice since the meal has only one choice. Unlike other countries, puplis have options. Some kids dont eat fish, but they dont have choice in Indonesia. ..Ps, Not all Schools receive Free Meal. Only selected Schoos and Provinces in Indonesia.
