December 3rd 2023 was the 40th Anniversary of the California International Marathon, which hosted about 10,000 runners between full marathon and relay runners (2 people half marathon distance each). The race was delayed for about 10 minutes. But the weather was great so we didn’t suffer rain and cold. For me it was the 1st time I participated at CIM, so got a bit anxious, and ready to go. After my LA marathon and a time of 3:51.56. I was ready to go for a better time.
Rolling hills are definitely all over this course, so if you are expecting a fast race, pace yourself well, because a lot of people go way to fast and by the first half, you start to see people struggling. My mission was to keep a pace that was comfortable and running with a friend also helped a lot. Pacing and talking to someone can get your mind off of bad sections on this race.
Everything went well until someone cut me off and another person stopped in front of me at a aid station (mile 23 aprox) that by trying to no hit anyone, my sudden reaction and movement caused me to have a hamstring cramp, couldn’t even tell my friend what happened so he kept going, ( we also said at the beginning that if someone had any issues, we would keep going if it was not so serious and so that we wouldn’t lose our chance of a PB), had to go to the side, stretch it out for a few seconds and started running again. Couldn’t catch up, hamstring felt tight so I had to slow a bit, after a few minutes the 3:30 pacer passed me, tried to keep up, but I felt like the hamstring was going to cramp up again. Stop again, stretch it out for a few seconds and got back into running non stop until the end.
Very happy with the result, had a 19:52 minute PB in a marathon, so hopefully on the next one I can go sub 3:30, still far from a BQ time, but at least we are going in a good direction.
For this race a followed a plan from Runners World, happy with the outcome and might try to do it again for my next training block.
    Thanks for watching

Thanks a lot! Pace yourself. You’ll do great 👍🏼. If you decide to go with a pacer, just make sure to go a little bit in front or a little bit behind of it. It gets crowded for the aid stations 🥤. Gotta make sure to to get hydrated.

Thanks a lot @Albert , had a lot of fun running with @ScottyB. It’s a lot easier running with a friend 👍🏼. Too bad I couldn’t hold on till the end, but 21 miles was good.

I was thinking this race would be a bit quieter, but cheering squads are everywhere on this race. Glad I met you in person and shared some miles on Saturday. Hope we can see each other on another race. Congrats on your race Terrence 👍🏼
