- Allan Simonsen suffered fatal injuries following a third lap accident in today's 90th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The 34-year-old Dane, at the wheel of the GTE-Am pole-sitting No. 95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8, lost control at Tetre Rouge before making heavy contact with the barriers.
The driver was immediately attended to on the scene by doctors from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest medical service and was transported to the circuit medical center where he died of his injuries.
The accident resulted in a safety car period of more than 1 hour to repair the barriers.
Simonsen was due to share the car with fellow Danes Christoffer Nygaard and Kristian Poulsen, the current GTE-Am championship leaders in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Simonsen, a former Danish Formula Ford champion, was considered to be one of the most versatile GT drivers in the world, having competed in Europe, America and Australia, with numerous wins and championships to his credit.
It is the first driver death at Le Mans since 1997 when Sebastien Enjolras lost his life in pre-qualifying. The last driver fatality in the 24-hour race was Jo Gartner in 1986.
Like simo in malaysia, the tyre went on the slippery part of the run off area. Surely as the cars get faster the tracks will have to be widened to cope with the intricate, precise handling needed to control these cars. It looked as if the back end was slightly loose before he left the track....RIP Allan. Your with the greats now. Senna, rhindt, clark.
It looks like something's wrong whit the left front wheel. Something's snaps and send the car in to the wall.
It just went out of control....there is footage from the car right behind you can see that clearly
Requiescat in pace, Allamn Simonsen... Hvil i fred fra Danmark!
