Sending a pallet to Sweden sounds a good option, with all the heavy stuff. Caravan too, surely if you can arrange volvo transport you can buy a caravan and get them to deliver, or sort delivery to the unit so you can just buy a small car to run around not a big tow vehicle. Guess the engine will be the Merc OM605?

Hi once registered and road legal you could consider shipping it to WA do the build with all your contacts then ship it back to Europe to start your travels. Look at the costs of accomodation and living costs in Europe including the build costs against the shipping both ways etc.

Hey Chris, Ange and Oakley. Very exciting plans! We have a 1990 ex-MOD Defender 110 hardtop with a pop-top. You are right to address some of the concerns re stealthiness / practicalities and options for when you don’t want to pop the roof. We have designed our build so that if needs be (due to strong winds mainly - which we get lots of here on the West coast of Scotland) we can sleep “downstairs” - easy enough to do in the more conventional fashion of a pull out bed. This also means when we want to be respectful or stealthy and not glaringly obvious we don’t have to pop the roof and can still sleep, sit, rest, cook etc with the roof down - sure we can’t stand up fully and get dressed as easily but we learnt the hard way that whilst the pop top is awesome 95% of the time there is always that occasion when you want the versatility not to have to. Best of luck with the build - I’ll be watching with interest. Cheers, Jake

Welcome to Sweden in a few weeks time then! 🙂
Not the best time of the year to visit weather wise but you will be busy building I reckon!
Spring is around the corner and will be nice so if you are still here by the end of April or so I hope you will enjoy some nice weather in the south of Sweden.
With a vehicle being over 30 years old you don't have to pay road taxes for it either and that can be a big thing here for a heavy vehicle.
I live in Växjö approx 200 k's inland north of Malmö and here it is no problem at all to free camp being surrounded by forests and lakes but along the coastline it is a bit more tricky during summer season at least. Free camping a lot with my campervan when we go out in the nearby surroundings.
A bit more tricky in parts of Europe and some countries have banned it all along, with fines if you get "caught"...
AUD has actually become really strong as a currency converted to SEK over the last 2 years so you will be doing good here (my son just got back from spending a year in Australia so I have been following the exchange rate...)
Anyway I really hope you will enjoy the stay here and good luck with the new build!

Aren’t baby seats/capusals/stroller free if you carry the baby on the plane in it? (Non parent talking) Qantas has a page about using child seats to secure the little one on a flight, no $s mentioned there.

    Hi, Chris!
I am also willing to build a box this year for my 4x4 camper (Vw T5 with chassis), but with a hard walls pop up roof, different than all I've seen on the market, the walls will be attached to the roof with piano hinges, not to the box.
Rigid walls weights a little bit more than canvas, but you get better insulation and more stable in the winds.
You can cheaply do it with pvc+xps sandwich panels from the pvc windows niche. A panel of 3x2m weights about 20kg and is around 150 euro.
Anyway, I will leave you some links down below with a few types of rigid walls roof, to inspire from.

Instead of a clamshell type roof what about a pop top? You could make it so that it opens to various heights so if you want to stop by the side of the road for a meal you open up part way vs opening all the way at the end of the day.

Do you have any specific model in mind? It's quite rare to find a pop top with the lifting bed/elevating roof that isn't clam shell.

My question is why, it seems a lot smaller as a RV? And is it even more capable than the unimog? Thanks.

We discussed on the previous video before this one - one of the main reasons, it fits in a 20ft shipping container. It also has portal axles like the Mog.

Make a fliptop, so you can sleep on the flip and still move around in the living space.

Take a look at the Epic Family Road Trip YT channel, they've just bought a massive Ford Truck with a camper on the back where the roof lifts at the press of a button on x4 arms / jacks to provide the roof height once they're at camp. Could be a good option for your Volvo... it even has a really clever door system 😎👌

Like some already have expressed the Stealthy-ness it will be very limited in a converted TGB 13. That car stand out in most urban and populated environments in Europe.
Have you checked the Knut build that was done by Explorer Magazine ? ruclips.net/video/efQJedzFAk8/видео.html
They started with the same base Volvo but with a Box and made a flip-up roof for more space. Theses TGB, 1311, 1312 and 1313 used to be ambulances or command-centers for the Swedish army.
There is also a TGB20 that is the TGB 13 with longer wheelbase and a 5-speed transmission. The original B30 engine is very reliable if maintained ok. However not so fuel efficient and only 130 hk.
Good Luck with the build and I'm looking forward to see the progress.

Looking forward to the build. Beware of customs duty and taxes imposed on any imported kit from outside the EU. Even if it’s your 25 year old toolkit, they will value it and you will pay taxes on the value over [SEK1700] from memory. Some EU countries are more efficient at tax collection than others, but it can be a nasty, unexpected shock. Can be cheaper to buy tools new in the EU.

It is a big project to take on in a foreign country.
