    I was excited when a local bike shop opened near me, but was super disappointed when I realized there was nothing under $3500. It’s just a fancy shop for the super high end bikes which is really off putting to more run of the mill cyclists. Love seeing shops move into spaces that actually serve the community. Wish I was near you guys!

    Running a mobility shop that is open to the whole community is an innovative and welcome idea. Over the years many shops have been focused on the racer who looks like he's on the cover of a cycling magazine and actively discouraged anyone who didn't fit the stereotype from even walking in the front door. Their business plan was to skim their ideal customers off the top, sell them the latest and greatest every summer, and not deal with any small fry - until the bubble burst.
    When I was heavily into BMX shops would turn you away even though it's a bike, with wheels and a chain and the customer just has a flat tire. Now you put a battery on a bike and it's the same old story. It's a dumb strategy because who have you ever heard of who only has 1 bike, or only 1 bike in the family. Refuse to fix a flat because you have to disconnect 1 wire and how that customer has a bike stand in the garage from Amazon and a few Park tools and is DIYing repairs for the entire family.

  • @WSBR707
    @WSBR707 4 месяца назад

    Most bike shops don't do the e-bike stuff you're referring to for a number of reasons some being: insurance premiums associated with full electrical repair versus mechanical only e-bike repair, because the revenue from said clientele may not contribute enough to the bottom line, because the equipment is subpar and unsafe, or because of prevalence of unweildy overweight models not being designed for typical service department infrastructure. Plenty other reasons too. Some have blanket policies against amazon purchases or certain uncertified battery-motor systems on hub motor bikes or even a lot of the name brand model, the list goes on. My hope is that this channel will show people who are thinking about doing this sort of thing how hard it really is if you go in with a ton of pre-0conceived notions about the industry, and a tinge of dunning kruger about your own tech abilities, and that we see you rise to meet the challenges and become better because of them. Thanks for the vids!

      The price of the bicycles I have in more store can be expensive but you can also get decent gravel bicycles for $1100. I carry solid carbon fiber MTB at $5k or full suspension fuji at $2k. I think this is all very reasonable. The high end stuff has gotten really expensive, but I couldn't afford high end stuff 30 years ago either.

      Not all shop-sold bicycles are too expensive. And if you want to make sure a bike really fits you, there is no other way than to try it and make a test ride at a local bike shop. Plus, every month ten new direct-to-consumer e-bike sites pop up and another nine fold. There are people who buy every nonsense because it's sold via the internet, but there are more who appreciate person-to-person customer service and quality products that can be serviced and replaced.

    There was a massive bike boom during COVID which flooded the market. Post pandemic you then see a flooded second hand market of bikes that people didn't end up using. I don't think it's so much a recession as a market where supply (especially from used bikes) is greater than the demand. It's smart to adapt rather than just double down on the traditional brick and mortar retailapproach. Ebikes and servicing seem like smart options.

      Sram’s success is likely a variable. As a new SRAM convert to their system (and a former Shimano die-hard), I get why investors would be sour!
      An additional hypothesis, hear me out:
      Shimano is a very LARGE corporation. I bet they fell into the oversupply binge of 2022 and couldn’t steer that supertanker in time before running aground like other major manufacturers.
      Keep in mind that Shimano’s biggest business is the bike division, but it also has outdoor (fishing/hunting) which suffered oversupply shock after amazing pandemic sales. Both sectors boomed in the pandemic. Specialized and Trek could likely offset the oversupply shock with dealer incentives to ‘encourage’ retailers to overstock, which is why we don’t see a lot of 2-24 bikes on shelves. Shimano doesn’t have that luxury.
      Dealers are still trying to move 2022-2023 inventory that’s gone cold. I almost bought a SRAM XO loaded Gas Gas emtb that’s 35% off, but 2-year old components that sat on a shelf didn’t please me. 😅

    There certainly are many ways a shop can move towards to bring in extra revenue. I think while on the subject of ebikes there are many factors that will show whether a shop actually makes a profit or not with them. First off, there is an additional liability insurance policy, then if you are offering a pickup/delivery option, you may need a new rack for your shop vehicle. There are a few extra tools that you might not have had in the tool inventory, and for some shops the electric repair stands also help out the employees working on them. As a small shop owner myself, I wish you good luck and hopefully this next season things will start to turn around a bit.

There is only one bike shop left in my immediate area as the shop I have been a regular customer of closed last year. He made a go of the e-bike business but lost his shirt on it. I’m not likely to be an e-bike customer since for my bike rides, my pedal bike(s) work for me. I’m a recreational rider and I like the physical effort of pedaling a bike.

    The bike industry kind of screwed itself by charging well over $1,000 for basic entry-level bikes. They're pricing would-be casual cyclists right out of the market. I haven't bought a new bike since 2007, and I probably never will again. If I want another bike, I'm going straight to the used market. If I go into a bike shop, I'm walking past the new bikes up front and straight to the used bikes in the back. Even if I had the money for a new bike, I still couldn't justify to myself the expense when I can get a used bike at a fraction of the cost, do a little tinkering, and get it to pretty much the same condition.

    Excellent pivot. Excellent reading of the environment. There is a huge opportunity of relatively easy income from a starving group if bike shops would only stop being elitest. And, yes, I get the insurance objection to cheap e-bikes. I understand the reluctance to work on crappy bike shaped objects where you fix one thing only to be blamed for some other part to fail and be blamed for it. Lean heavily into servicing. It's where the customers are. Bikes are good, they last a long time now (durability and in my opinion they are pretty close to the pinnacle in regards to geometries) but they will always need maintenance amd there's a global shortage of good mechanics.
    Couple that with everyone moaning about how expensive they are (granted, the top end bikes are, but YOU don't NEED that bike) people are keeping their existing bike and just looking after it, but there's always jobs the home mechanic can't or won't do, and that's where the workshop comes in.
    Just my opinion running a workshop for the last decade with increasing customer base and sales every year.
