Not an expert but through the years I have owned 5 Land Cruisers . Very sad that Toyota is killing the V8 4.5 Turbo Diesel . That engine is indestructible and very efficient . Again , I’m no expert and yes ; I’m 63 years old and all my LC’s have been diesels . Would love to hear comments , cheers

As they shown and explained in this video, this new engine is doing much better than the old one, with less consumptions and better performances. V8 4.5 was Good, but kinda outdated.

Diesel is the way to go, if you want fuel mileage, and longevity. I buy a 3.3, and not get worried about V-8 diesel. Maybe, a government mandate, move the displace, in the new engine, lower
But, that's not taking in the vehicle's, of yesteryear's, and I don't think, it will matter. Drive, to decide. Then, if it's not the same. Then , you, can make comparisons. The engine's, can be comparable, if it's set-up correctly I have a diesel 3500, and, it's still running strong
Bet, I changed it ? I changed it to no duallys, and had disc brakes, put on. So, take it how you want to, but, if you want a L. C. ,you might think it's, just what you're wanting. Cheer's, and good luck, on your decision.

V8 is dead due to emissions! Toyota wanted to make it better for their new environmental-friendly next gen 300 series, they reduced from 8 cylinders to 6 cylinders for increased fuel efficiency. And plus, they have improved the power, torque, and fuel economy by Toyota's new modifed twin-turbo, higher fuel direct injection bar, electronic controlled fan and others

That hot v design will Roast the rear cylinders and cause a myriad of problems from head gasket failures, cooking pistons, exhaust gas leaks, actuators seizing etc etc. Adding EGR and DPF issues. Toyota you could have done a modular compound electric turbo 4.2 inline 6 derived from the 2.8 GD and Combine it with a mild Hybrid MGU. Rated at 380hp 800nm ICE+GU.
That would be a winner that shares critical identical Engine parts with the more humble, cheap 2.8 GD.
    That is what Toyota is....
Here you lost the plot even though the 3.3 is a heavily redesigned 4.5 minus two cylinders.
    Watch this space...

I am not a mechanical engineer, but here are my logical observations on this so called NEW model.
    1. The piston design looks ineffecient for fuel consumption. With the combustion of the fuel, the force generated should push the piston down, hence rotating the crankshaft. The piston has a hole in the top of piston that enables the force produced from the combustion of fuel to push outwards. This is perpendicular to piston travel, and would minimise the fuel efficiency.
    2. Sequential turbo systems have existed for a long time now. A comptetive Japanese brand offers sequential turbos at about half the price of what this vehicle would cost. Obviously, they are intending to compete with very luxurious brands that simply offer greater value and design.
    3. Norton fans have existed and been mastered in trucks and road trains for use in Australia, as one of many examples. No need for electrics, or water temperature sensors. In short, a gel heats up based on the heat of the engine components to rotate the fan shaft, hence rotating the fan.
    4. Instead of SEALING the engine bay, why not move electrical components for water crosses. What if this so called sealing wears with use and leaves critical electrical components exposed to water. Electricity and water doesn't mix. A common disatrious recipe this company used on previous models that would cause alternators to fail with water crosses.
    5. The sump design looks great when going up a steep incline, but what about down it. Even so, is this vehicle capable of such an incline? It also protrudes alot.
This new model appears to be facelifted and instantaneously appreciated in cost for old and inefficient new technology. This is only my observation, based on my experience with other engineering fields.

      1. I was thinking the same initially, but I think there must be a good reason for that piston design. Fuel efficiency clearly was one of the main objectives with this vehicle. I think that they would have simulated and tested/optimized that part of the design a lot.
      2. Of course they have existed for a long time. So what?
      3. Water temperature sensors must be in either case. Viscous clutch fans indeed are old and common tech already. But notice that this vehicle is sold also in the North, where is very cold climates. Making it work in Australia is only one side of the cake. Electric clutch control allows more precise control of the fan and also from various other inputs other than the coolant alone, like oil temp, transmission temp, ambient temp and complete turn off to reduce load.
      4. I don't think the engine bay is sealed, but individual components. This is a good point though. I doubt water breaks the alternators though as much as crap that goes to the alternator within the water? Some sealing is needed in either case and long enough breathers, you don't want water in engine oil or diffs, etc.

Quick thoughts. Looks like the same issue with the V8's low hanging alternator.
I guess the air intake is off to the left hand side now..
But one good thing, they've kept the metal intake manifold rather than go plastic fantastic like most new engines today.

scary how many people still want to shit in their own nest, are so enthusiastic about burning oil. Now when cars with 3 or 4 electric engines are coming (not only pickups, see MG Marvel R), this toyota is so obsolete. Maybe not in the desert but who knows what will be more available there very soon - an oil pump or an oasis with solar panels.

@@manofausagain Huh? Electric motor has more torque than diesel or gasoline motor, that is exactly the strength of an electric motor. Then there is other downsides to electric power train. Biggest vehicles in the world drive with electric motors, ie. ships, dump trucks, thousand tonne trains, etc. Diesel acts as a generator in those.

    • @wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20
      @wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20 3 года назад +1

Diesel actually makes a lot of sense for this type of vehicle. They are often used far from electric grid or charging possibilities. Like if you look at Africa and Australia 4x4 usage habits. Massive continents with little infrastructure. How do you expect electric car to be used there? For off road vehicle weight is also a downside, electric drivetrain tends to be very heavy because of the batteries. If you want same off road performance with electric drivetrain, you need much bigger tires to start with.

@@wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20 BTW, I am a fan of land cruiser styling in Australia and middle east (not sold in Europe), but see changes to the grid in Australia, how rapid it all has developed, incl. Teslas grid support. Just wait a few years, range, prices, ev chargers, will make the oil a funny past, Dacia Spring is now one of the cheapest cars in Europe (with incentives), unimaginable a year ago, a year ago.
