I’m 19 years old work construction and i tell you what I’ve been finally buying higher end gear and it really makes fishing a whole different experience love what you guys do have been watching tactical bassin since i was in highschool
Glad to see St Croix getting some love here!! My first good spinning rod was a St Croix Avid in a 6'6" ML. Have had that rod for 13 years now, and it is still an awesome Rod!!
Mike Kotur that’s the first st. Croix I ever owned as well. Exact model and action. It’s an amazing rod! Great for rivers and lakes. Caught my PB smallie on that rod this spring (5.01 lbs).
Man, I wish that I could afford some of these. The medium-low end recommendations are on point too. Thanks for everything that you guys put up here. You guys are legends in my household.
Thank you! And Patrick just hit the nail on the head :-) They're backordered but if you scoop them up they'll be back soon. The Expride is the high end rod at a mid-range price.
Thanks for the recommendation. I have had eyes for this rod for a while now. Again, you guys are awesome. The interaction with subscribers and killer advice/fun videos blows me away. Unreal in the fishing community.
I just picked up a Chronarch MGL 150HG based on your reviews. I haven't purchased a new reel in over a decade. I can't believe how light and high performance these reels have become. I was stunned at how easy it test pitched in the yard. Thanks and keep it up! -mM
You guys hit the nail on the head with high end gear, I fish only Aldebaran's do to the weight I have a SCI (spinal cord injury) an the higher end equipment it allows me to fish all day! 😁
Thank you, guys. I LOVE this video and the whole series of guides. I look forward to it all year. I've gone back and looked at last year's buyer's guides a dozen times in 2018.
Hey tactical bassin great video. U guys never cease to amaze me with the knowledge yall put out in every video and its amazing how much I've learned over the years and how it translates to Texas fishing so much too. Everything from the way I trim jig skirts to jerkbait twitching tips that I've picked up from yall over the years. So much appreciated and keep up the great work and be safe out there
The qualities you guys mention about the legend x are what make me love it so much. That tip is just extraordinary, man. My nrx MIGHT be more sensitive (?) but the legend x is more enjoyable to fish with. That tip allows you to do so many things you couldn’t normally do with a rod of that power...the cork is really top notch, too. I dunno man...they’re just killer rods, top to bottom.
Thanks for all that y'all do for the fishing community. As a thanks, I have used the links that y'all have listed in the description to place my order.
Matt and Tim, Thank you for the video. As someone has already commented I will never be able to justify spending money on any of these rods or reels. It is still good to know how they perform. For a guy like me I may purchase the rods they make in my price range and hope they incorporate some of the same technology and action. Case in point over the past two years I purchased 2 St. Croix rods. I always looked at them as high price, high performance and out of my price range. They introduced an entry level rod. I bought it, it had the type of action I like, fast tip light weight finesse and light line. It was @ $100 and in my price point. Turns out to be one of my favorite rods. This year St. Croix Premiers go on sale, same price range with the sale and once again a great rod for me. Similar characteristics but a lot longer rod. So I am glad you reviewed St. Croix, I am one of those subs who has been asking your opinion on their products. I never hear you mention Fenwick. I am interested in your thoughts about their products. I purchased a Legacy @ 25 to 30 years ago, while on sale. It has been my all time favorite rod. The Legacy was retired a few years ago and I now own 3 or 4 other modern models. A Fenwick and St. Croix are always in the mix when I hit the water these days. I am not in the high end bracket but I agree a quality rod and quality reel make a major difference. I have consumed a lot of junk to find good products. Like Tim said there are quality products available that may fit performance and weight wise in this review but fall far below the price point. So for a working 9 to 5 guy like me I am grateful for that and spend a lot of time trying to find those hidden gems (bargains).
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! We really appreciate it. Tim and I both grew up on Fenwick. I owned nothing but HMX and HMG's for years. They're nice rods my only issue is that in recent years their actions changed a lot. Suddenly they got much softer than I would have anticipated (personal opinion) so it got difficult to predict what I was buying. Overall their quality is great and they make a nice product.
I wanted to have something really special so this year I saved and when this video dropped i decided on a conquest med heavy with the aldebaran. I've never spent anywhere even remotely close to this on a combo let alone just the reel or just the rod. But omg, the performance and just overall experience of using this combo is Out of this world. I work at Cabelas and we have never had any conquests in or aldes so buying it blind was a little scary but every outfitter I've showed it to and everyone i have fished with all had the same reaction..."holy (expletive)". If you're worried thatspending that much will it Really be worth it or will you reallyfeel it...I promise you do. I threw a 1/8oz paddle tail up to a 2oz swimbait yesterday, just ridiculous. Thanks guys for sharing your passion and wisdom for the sport and the gear. There's a reason i reccomend all the new anglers that come in to check your channel out. You guys rock
You guys are the best, your advice and knowledge on gear and the technical approach to fishing has helped so much,I appericiate you guys, best of luck in 2019 ,fishing for life, keep the great videos coming,GOD bless you both
Very pleased for my subscription with you guys!! Awesome guys!!!!! Good fisherman's!!!! Look at Matt how is looking at the rod at 4:19, he kills it!!! ))) Keep it up guys!! And Greetings from Spain!!!
Thank you Tacticalbassin and everyone in the comments letting me know about the “secret” sale. Just saved $52 on a Shimano expride rod for my new DC 150. Appreciate it.
This video literally has me drooling! 😂🤣 If we weren't expecting our baby girl in April, I would buy a couple of these. Hahah who am i kidding. Even if i wasn't i couldn't afford it.😂🤣 If you guys ever do a finesse fishing set-up giveaway, please put me on the list! Really wanted to say thank you guys for everything! I have been fishing for 20 years off and on. I thought i knew it all. Until i started watching you guys. I have learned so much from Tactical Bassin. And very thankful for y'all sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us! Keep it up!! Tight lines brothers!
I’ve finally started getting into the high end stuff. So far my high end combo is a Shimano Chronarch MGL paired with a G Loomis NRX 802 JWR. I’m blown away! Absolutely love it
As always a great video! One high end addition I'd make is if you like Glass cranking rods pick up the St. Croix Legend Glass. I was losing fishing with my composite cranking rod. I picked up the St. Croix Legend Glass and the Angels sang. I've yet to lose a fish on that MH cranking rod that wasn't operator error. I've got the medium action one on the Christmas wish list for smaller square bills.
@@tlbombsquad7883, on the MH I throw everything from a Spro Super DD Crankbait (1.5 oz 20-25 ft.) to something like a Strike King KVD 1.5 DD Squarebill (7/16 oz 10ft). On windy days I need to be a lot more careful with the 7/16 but it's completely doable. I hope that helps. It's become my favorite rod!
Even though I’m out priced on all of these, still worth the watch haha Learned a lot about those high end rods that I would’ve never heard about before, thanks for making this vid!
Just being picky :) Last year, you linked in the details below to the gear, you also mentioned not just which model was a favorite, but specifically “jig rod” “frog rod” etc. that was super helpful because in the past I have bought rods and now I don’t use them because I didn’t get the right action length etc for my intended application. I think a lot of ppl will benefit from that
My favorite vid of the year. Nrx rods with aldebaran mgl & metanium mgl reels are where it’s at. If you fish a metanium mgl, you dont want a chronarch mgl. The shimano ci4 2500 is the best high end light weight spinning reel for the price, $200 & 6oz. A kistler zbone is very close to nrx in price/sensitivity/weight
Just as an FYI regarding Megabass sales. I literally just grabbed a Megabass Orochi (jerkbait special) for 20% off from J&H tackle. It’s rare but every now and then a dealer is willing to work deals on the Megabass stuff! My first Megabass purchase excluding their baits. Can’t freaking wait to throw some 110’s around on this thing.
I live in the Midwest and I've always fished with st.croix they have always been my favorite rods for 100-200 range you can have a great rod . The triumph the lower end is good for around 100 I buy the avid for 150- 200$ . I broke one in half today on a fish so I'm sending it to st.croix they will send me a new one . Little known fact if you break one they will fix it or send one new. Good video!
I learned about the fixed megabass price last year. Still totally worth the price of admission for a Daemos Destroyer. Best rod ever for a dark sleeper in my opinion.
Are y’all doing a video on accessories this year? Net, pliers,....or things you don’t have in your boat you need! That would be a good one. Selfishly I want that vid. Just bought my first boat and don’t know what you need until you need it!
We probably will. But if you scroll down any video description you'll find an in depth list of those items we feel really strongly about. Tools, net, etc.
I read those recommendations just curious as to why that net, that life vest etc if the reason is just as simple as we’ve used it for years and it hasn’t let us down or if it’s as deep as the love of Matt and his NRX Aldebaran combo
Got it. Well for now I'd say that those split ring pliers are critical... wont use any other. We trust those life jackets and glasses to keep us safe... they're the real deal. That electrosampson has successfully weighed a handful of world records for the TB family. And lastly that net is AMAZING. I have to admit weve been playing with some Frabills lately but havent found the perfect fit yet. The rest is just gear we use but those items are really important to us.
Appreciate the video where I finally took the plunge and bought me a NRX plus853c jwr this year and put a lews hypermag speed spool I haven't fished with it yet but super light Love lews reels and I also have a g Loomis GLX I've had for years great rod and I'll be putting the winn slim grip tape around the handles
I don't know how to feel about you guys talking up St. Crois, especially with Covid stocks being less. But you are spot on. I grew up on Lake Michigan and fished St. Crois decades ago, they are fantastic. BTW, picked up a Orochi xx JB special and Aldeberon after you've talked em up. I'm pretty stoked to throw some 110's with that rig.
I have an 6’ 6” All Star Extra Fast Heavy rod from before theygot bought out paired with a Chronarch 150 XG. It’s such a great set up for worms and jigs.
Joshua S , haven’t got to use it yet. COVid 19 has me locked down. Used it the last day of steelhead fishing but water was too low to even really play with it. Super sensitive for sure and you can feel everything! No regrets here.
Even though I will probably never buy the high end tackle you are showing, I still enjoy the video. There are still things you talk about such as sensitivity or application that I can try to apply to in my price range. Always things to learn. Happy Holidays to all.
Love my NRX Met DC combo. Feels better than the Phenix K2 Antares DC. I also can’t stop using the dobyns Champion HP with the met DC as well. Great video and it is worth the dollars spent
Maybe terminal tackle guide? There's a lot of guys that use great rod, reel, line, and absolute junk terminal tackle that fails or lets them down when it really matters.
Sounds about like me. Last year i used snaps so i could change baits quickly. As a bank fisherman i didn't want to carry a ton of rods but i'm changing that this year. I will just direct tie and depending on where i go instead of carrying 2 casting and 1 spinning i will carry up to 5-6 casting and 1 spinning just so i don't lose any feel. The Cal Coast rod mule will definitely help me in my crazy decisions lol
I have a imx jwr and I love it. I couldn't image the way a nrx would feel. I have a bantam on my imx. And feel in love. So if there is that much a difference I may have to get me one. Still sticking with the bantam though. Love that reel. So solid feeling
I have a handful of very good quality combos. If I had to choose between 4 or 5 mid range combos and one nrx combo id make the nrx do it all everytime. My favorite rods by far
Love the buyer guide series! Thanks for your opinions, time and effort. I'm wondering if you guys are putting together a buyers guide for best value rods/reels across all price-points (personally I only care about middle-upper range $$$).
As a Junior in college, people ask me why I chose one of the hardest majors in my school. My answer is always the same, "Because my future career should pool in good money so I can buy a big bass boat and super expensive bass fishing equipment." Lol. #motivation.
I can vouch for the secret sale if that's what you want to call it. I put a st Croix rod in my cart, saw no discount, but the receipt showed a discount. It's the same w shimano too
Have you fellas had a chance to try Gary Loomis's newest Edge rods? Another line several of my friends are loving is the Lux rods from 6th Sense fishing. Thanks to you both for sharing the knowledge you have with us all. A Merry Christmas to you both and to your families!
I have a Aldebaran MGL 50HG on a 6' 8" med. action Jackall Poison Adrena rod. I have about $750.00 in the set up. I also have alot of Kastking Rod and reels I grind with. I use my high dollar rig for throwing 1/8 oz. stuff and small jerk baits. It really is worth the money, it is a world apart from my other rods.
Not enough to give a fair assessment yet. Thank you @paddle Tales for sharing your insights. As soon as we're confident in a review we will provide it.
My 755 X is super versatile. Way more than just a mag-heavy deep water jig rod. It can handle traditional Med/Hev reaction and bottom contact duties up to its max of 1-1/2. To just hold one, it has that NRX feeling of fragility Matt was mentioning but is actually a very powerful rod when loaded up with a big fish. I do believe the poster who said his 753(?) was too parabolic. I tell people who ask for a recommendations on this line-up to get one no lighter than the 4 power. The 3 power has to feel like a medium/light to medium action rod. Thanks Paired with a Bantam MGL my 7-5 mag hvy balances on the lock nut. Crazy good balance and btw the Mag weighs 5.1ozs and lastly this is the only Dobyns rod currently in my locker. You know how Dobyns die-hards can be...cool-aid drinkers, lol
If you guys like the curado DC and Metanium DC so much you would love the scorpion DC it's at the curado DC price but the preformence of the Metanium DC 3 by 5 brakes and it's about the same weight as the Metanium DC .
Man bros, I'm with ya, there's nothing like fishing a $1000 combo. Obviously there's not a magic number, but you know what I mean. Once you go there, it's hard to impossible to go back to average! My bottom of the line now is St. Crois Avid, but man I love Megabass, and don't apologize for it!
Great to see you guys review St.Croix i've used them for years just haven't jumped up to the legend sticks didn't know if they were worth that kind of $$$$$$$ but may change my thinking on them in the future.
Thanks for everything you two do for the bass fishing community. I've learned alot from your channel. Have you guys ever tried Kistler rods? I've been hearing good things about their sensitivity. Going back and forth between Kistler and Expride(if I can get my hands on one) thanks again guys. Tight lines.- Chris
Love u guys I was wondering if at some point you guys can do a review on the Alx rods I bought one earlier this year and it has become one of my favorite rods I absolutely love it it’s the deputy rod
Something I’ve heard about, but haven’t found any good videos on is finding the spine of a rod. What to look for and how does finding the spine actually benefit you?
Great topic! Its a very simple process of flexing the rod tip slightly on the ground then rolling the rod with your palm. You'll feel the spine as you roll the blank, one spot will flip over more aggressively.
I could not agree with you more on the Shimano Conquest. I have a 7ft6in med hvy paired with a Shimano metanium MGL. I throw jigs on it and crack the whip and it feels super sturdy. Five minutes later I will throw a light drop shot on the same setup and it performs flawlessly. This one rod has replaces like 5 other rods for me.
If I thought I had to spend that kind of money to catch fish I probably would have taken up golfing. They have a great channel though and a lot of great tips, a pretty diverse following, so I can understand some of these high dollar shows. Basically totally irrelevant to me though, for like 750 bucks I can rent a cabin on a Canadian lake for a week and spend time fishing, not tackle dreaming.
Great video guys! I can't afford any of these, but its still cool to watch. Wondering if you guys could make a middle of the road combo video? Like around $300-$350 for the combo, in between the budget and high end stuff. That's about as high priced stuff that I (and I would think many other people) can afford.
Its definitely coming before Christmas. Spoiler alert... Shimano Exprides are the best bang for the buck in the entire industry right now IMO and you could still scoop them before the sale is over.
TacticalBassin Yeah I realized they were on sale for I think 226 with the sale and then I went to buy one once I realized it and they were sold out in most models and the one I needed. But yes I’d say they are the best bang for the buck right now.
TacticalBassin I think I’m going to get a Curado K paired with a St Croix Legend Tournament for about 350 which is about 100+ off the normal cost. I wasn’t going to grab a Curado but I’ve heard so much about it being a great work horse (and you guys love them) so I needed to try it.
Anyone else notice some NRX blue casting rods have the specs written below the grip and some are above the reel seat on the rod...? What's the deal... Oh and I recently bought the 852s paired with the 3000 Excense... Insane but my only complaint is the T knob on the Excense. Where can I get a smaller (Stradic 2500 style) knob for the Excense?
I’m 19 years old work construction and i tell you what I’ve been finally buying higher end gear and it really makes fishing a whole different experience love what you guys do have been watching tactical bassin since i was in highschool
You mean since last year?
I mean early highschool like freshman year
Glad to see St Croix getting some love here!! My first good spinning rod was a St Croix Avid in a 6'6" ML. Have had that rod for 13 years now, and it is still an awesome Rod!!
They're great sticks for sure that much of the country overlooks.

Fish w/ the Exprides brotha! Sensitivity is insane. No rod more sensitive under the NRX.

Awesome combo!!
I just got a 802 NRX how does it balance with the Chronarch ? does it cast light baits good
Best G loomis drop shot rod. weedless presentation. Thanks for the great videos
My personal preference is the NRX 852S.
St Croix great rods , glad to see them make to your top end list.
Great video, I own a bunch of high end shimanos and love them. I need to order some conquests now. The Metanium DC is my favorite.

@@tacticalbassin what model do you recommend for jigs
Depends on what weight/hook style jigs but if we're talking an all-around do everything jig rod, 844C

The triumph the lower end is good for around 100 I buy the avid for 150- 200$ . I broke one in half today on a fish so I'm sending it to st.croix they will send me a new one . Little known fact if you break one they will fix it or send one new. Good video!
A lot of folks asking for that Dobyns xtasy video. Let's go!
I just got my first pay check, I decided to buy the shimano metanium dc paired up with the Shimano zodias lovely combo. 👍
As usual another great video. Thanks guys.
I would love to see you guys do a review on the shimano adrena rod and Garry Loomis edge rods against the NRX.
Out of my price point. Thanks guys.
Changed my plan, just picked up a 2020 St Croix Legend Xtreme AGS paired with a Daiwa Steez 70hl
Hows the rod? I'm thinking about getting one aswell
Joshua S , haven’t got to use it yet. COVid 19 has me locked down. Used it the last day of steelhead fishing but water was too low to even really play with it. Super sensitive for sure and you can feel everything! No regrets here.
Those destroyer Rods are great.
Even though I will probably never buy the high end tackle you are showing, I still enjoy the video. There are still things you talk about such as sensitivity or application that I can try to apply to in my price range. Always things to learn. Happy Holidays to all.
You nailed it, there is a huge trickle down through all the gear at every price point.
Love my NRX Met DC combo. Feels better than the Phenix K2 Antares DC. I also can’t stop using the dobyns Champion HP with the met DC as well. Great video and it is worth the dollars spent
Conquest rod and a Bantam for Black Friday! Definitely the most expensive video I've watched in awhile.
Maybe terminal tackle guide? There's a lot of guys that use great rod, reel, line, and absolute junk terminal tackle that fails or lets them down when it really matters.
Boy, isn't that the truth!
Guilty...
That's an awesome combo! It really is a whole step up again... its pretty insane.
You guys are dead on with the rod and reels. But you guys should try a lew's hypermag speed spool. I love mine paired with st croix rod.
aspadafina that TI PRO! BEAST REEL
This video you did last year is why I have a metanium mgl now...
Nice!!
I have a handful of very good quality combos. If I had to choose between 4 or 5 mid range combos and one nrx combo id make the nrx do it all everytime. My favorite rods by far
you guys smile too much when you talk about these combos , I will have them after a better boat.
They're just fun to fish with :-)
Love the buyer guide series! Thanks for your opinions, time and effort. I'm wondering if you guys are putting together a buyers guide for best value rods/reels across all price-points (personally I only care about middle-upper range $$$).
Love the high end videos.
Sweet video guys!
Thanks!
Can you do a $400-$450 rod and reel combo vid? Thx love the content you guys put out. 👌🏽
just purchased the legend x 7”1 med heavy. been looking for a sensitive rod because the lake i fish tournoments on is all spots mosty will update
As a Junior in college, people ask me why I chose one of the hardest majors in my school. My answer is always the same, "Because my future career should pool in good money so I can buy a big bass boat and super expensive bass fishing equipment." Lol. #motivation.
St. Croix Legend Extreme Inshore 7’MF
Shimano Exsence 3000
My next set up!
I can vouch for the secret sale if that's what you want to call it. I put a st Croix rod in my cart, saw no discount, but the receipt showed a discount. It's the same w shimano too
Is that on the TW website?
Yes it is.
Thanks Sumi! Its been this way for years, we're glad word is finally spreading about it.
TacticalBassin does the discount apply to back orders?
Does it work with MegaBass?
Bought my first true high end rod. Kistler Helium 7’3” Heavy.
NRX for he win!
Have you guys got your hands on the Dobyns Xtasy rods yet?
Not enough to give a fair assessment yet. Thank you @paddle Tales for sharing your insights. As soon as we're confident in a review we will provide it.
@@alldaytony2751 Soft? The 755 is def not a soft rod compared to my HPs..
My 723 is soft all the way down to the handle. I do like the balance of the rod though.
Should do a video on writing logs and what main points to write in them
If you guys like the curado DC and Metanium DC so much you would love the scorpion DC it's at the curado DC price but the preformence of the Metanium DC 3 by 5 brakes and it's about the same weight as the Metanium DC .
I’m a college kid so I don’t have a ton of money but dang it I’m gonna get a conquest and a metanium dc one day! It’s gonna happen
Great to see you guys review St.Croix i've used them for years just haven't jumped up to the legend sticks didn't know if they were worth that kind of $$$$$$$ but may change my thinking on them in the future.
check out the reviews on Tackletour Awesome rods and USA made.
Would you suggest the Chronarch MGL for light to medium flipping aplications?
Yes, its an amazing reel for the price and its solid. Definitely capable of medium flipping.
@@tacticalbassin thanx👍
Tim likes spinning rods
TylersReelFishing Fairy wands has its place 😬
I like spinning gear too. Nothing wrong w/it. Has a place and time . Another tool. 🎣
Why do so many people use the Shimano Stradic Ci4 instead of getting the 18 Exsense Ci4 ?
what is your favorite megabass rod that you can use for chatter bait and a swim jig?
Thanks for everything you two do for the bass fishing community. I've learned alot from your channel. Have you guys ever tried Kistler rods? I've been hearing good things about their sensitivity. Going back and forth between Kistler and Expride(if I can get my hands on one) thanks again guys. Tight lines.- Chris
For sensitivity bottom contact: Dobyns xtasy, NRX or Conquest?.....Lets go!
Evobassfishmn love my NRX
I just got a 802C NRX what would be a good baitcaster for it.For throwing weightless up to 3/8 ounce baits
What rod would you pair the slx dc 8.2.1
Braid frog rod?
Texas/jig rod?
Punching?????
Please check out the St Croix Avid X. I could see you guys really liking the 7'4H and 7'4MH
Love u guys I was wondering if at some point you guys can do a review on the Alx rods I bought one earlier this year and it has become one of my favorite rods I absolutely love it it’s the deputy rod
We'll do our best
Glad you guys did this video...now I have fire power to use against my wife to spend all our savings! Thanks guys!
Bwahahaha!
I got Black legend Extreme paired up with Shamino Metanium
I really want to see you guys try some Ark Rods.
Dobyns Champion Xp spinning with a Shimano stradic Ci4 best spinning set up I have ever fished with
Have y’all fish with the Lamiglas rods yet pretty damn good rods my self
Something I’ve heard about, but haven’t found any good videos on is finding the spine of a rod.
What to look for and how does finding the spine actually benefit you?
Great topic! Its a very simple process of flexing the rod tip slightly on the ground then rolling the rod with your palm. You'll feel the spine as you roll the blank, one spot will flip over more aggressively.
8:40 there was a fish blowing up behind u guys lol
I could not agree with you more on the Shimano Conquest. I have a 7ft6in med hvy paired with a Shimano metanium MGL. I throw jigs on it and crack the whip and it feels super sturdy. Five minutes later I will throw a light drop shot on the same setup and it performs flawlessly. This one rod has replaces like 5 other rods for me.
Would it be better to get a curado DC with a Shimano slx rod? Or a nicer rod with like an SLX Reel?
What the difference between the Shimano essence and essence ci4+
I dont know why im watching this because I'll never be able to afford any of these
same
Exactly 😂
If I thought I had to spend that kind of money to catch fish I probably would have taken up golfing. They have a great channel though and a lot of great tips, a pretty diverse following, so I can understand some of these high dollar shows. Basically totally irrelevant to me though, for like 750 bucks I can rent a cabin on a Canadian lake for a week and spend time fishing, not tackle dreaming.
Just work at cabelas. I get 50% off shimano, loomis, st.croix, denail, lews +++
ItsBigCon well the closest cabelas to me is 2 hours away
