We spend Feb. to May in the Orlando area, at Orange Lake Resort. We just went to the Hershey, PA. RV show last week. We currently own a 2020 GD 2670MK and are considering upgrading to the GD Solitude 390RK-R. Of course, that means a new truck too, so it will be a couple more years before we make that jump. It was fun dreaming though. Stay traveling!

Very cool show. We recently attended the oklahoma city show. Stayed in our RV on site with FULL hook-ups. Nothing like waking up at the RV show. We posted a small video. Last weekend we also attended the Tulsa Oklahoma show. It was great! Thanks for taking us along guys.

We were at the Tampa show as well, in February and stayed in our Class C at the time. Never purchased anything there as we were actually going to buy used. We had bought the Class C for our trip to Alaska in '16 and sold it right after the Tampa show. We live in Okeechobee!

I want to see how you came to decide the one you have now. Can’t wait find out. If it is a video I mean. I love following your channel. Trying to find a decent 5th wheel bunkhouse under 35ft was so difficult for us. Being on the west coast everything we found was a toy hauler and that was not what we wanted. Ended up buying a used 2008 terry 295bhds. 2 bedrooms( with doors!) 1 bath, 2 slides. It suits our family of 4+ our dog perfectly. There is a perfect rig out there for everyone, sometimes it just takes time to find it. I shopped for over a year.

RV shows, the best place to shop for an RV. Everything under one roof and plenty of a/c. We also loved the Winnebago and was one we really considered buying, we found a Salem with almost the same layout and a much better price so that’s what we went with. We love it!!!

Wait...... Going full-time you don't want a light/lite weight or entry level RV. They can't stand up to the abuse of full-time living. The light/lite versions don't have the insulation. You're typical summer day turns the inside into an oven. When the temps drop, everything freezes up. The furnace and A/C unit have difficulties maintaining a comfortable temperature. In the winter the floors are freezing, water lines burst, and holding tanks become sewage-cicles. The light and entry level RVs are for occasional use only. You use in the summer, winterize, and cover them for the winter. They are not designed for traveling the country. Everything starting with the tires at the bottom to the insulation in the roof is rated for seasonal use only.
To save yourself from buyers remorse, find a three to five year old unit designed for full time. Stay away from the light weight units. The only reason it's light weight is because they took out material that last and keep the weather out. Upgrade your tow vehicle so you're max trailer weight doesn't exceed 80% of the tow vehicle's maximum capacity. Otherwise you're going to wear the tow vehicle out. The closer to the max capacity you get, the quicker you wear out the tow rig. Usually starting with the transmission. Brakes are a constant every few months. A vehicle's maximum capacity is not designed as a benchmark for full time towing. Its there when one needs it. I'm at just under 75% with my truck and Pinnacle 5th wheel. This is above my comfort level of 70%. Any heavier and I will need to go HDT. Something I want to avoid. Once you go HDT you'll need to add a Smart car so you've got a run around vehicle. Smart car are not comfy. Even at just 5.9 and a 135#s. My Ram has many upgrades and add-ons to help maintain a smoother ride and tow. Thanks to being under the max capacity and the extras on the truck, I've been able to avoid accidents. If you loose the suddenly loose your trailer brakes, the truck is all you have to stop.
As for the girls wanting bigger beds...they'll regret that choice when there is no play or walking room in the bunk. A mid bunk floorplan is the best way to go in order to maintain a complete living and dining room. A mid bunk offers almost the same amount of floor space as a bunk house with a slide and an outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens are great in the warmer regions amd during the summer. No need to heat up the trailer further cooking inside. Some mid bunk fifth wheels offer a slide out kitchen just before the entry door. This option can take up a good chunk of the basement storage. However, coming from a trailer to a fifth wheel you'll still enjoy the added storage and dedicated generator compartment for a lot more boondocking.
My recommendation is upgrade your rig and purchase a 3 to 5 year old full time RV. Avoid using a 1/2 ton amd buying a new light/lite unit. You'll regret the decision. Especially going full time. Most going full time can't afford a do over. There is no: "Well let's go home. We'll save up enough money to upgrade the truck. Then take a huge loss trading in this lite trailer so we can upgrade to a full-time unit.". Most full-timers don't have a home to return to. It's typically a one shot deal. Sink or swim.
Ok. Enough of my lecturing. I'll step down off my high horser and let you two continue your research. Ask other RVers who full-time too. My opinion is just one of a thousand others.
I'm excited for you all. Good luck.
    Cheers!

We have a 2017 Grand Design 303rls. We love it. But the 2018 had a few changes that I’d like. We did have a major issue (est.$3000 repair) with the kitchen slide one month after the warranty expired but the company took care of it. Our dealer made it all happen. Can’t say enough good about them both. Oddly enough we are thinking of trading it and my truck for a class c in the 30ft range. It’s just my wife and I and I’m getting a little old to be climbing in and out and under things.

    • @FindingOurSomeday
      @FindingOurSomeday  5 лет назад

Captain Skippy that’s really good to hear! I hear you on the class Cs. We spent a lot of this time at the Tampa this year dreaming of being smaller. We still have the girls though. We really liked the Fleetwood pulses (B+) or some of the smaller super Cs like the Thore Omni.

We saw many Grand Designs and loved the company as well as layouts and finishes. We looked into various models but we knew that with the type of traveling we were hoping to do that it had to be mostly accessible on the road, so we needed one with only one slide. The layout of ours has been absolutely perfect for us during this last year of travel. We hope you find your perfect home as well! 😁

How do you be so calm in front of the camera on your first episode and get quality results with your imaging and music fades on the audio track? armandomrgl85 we looked at a few Heartlands at the Tampa show but at the time, they didn’t have a layout that worked for us. Beautiful rigs. There is nothing specific that I could say to watch for regarding that brand as I don’t know enough about them. Hope you have a 3/4 ton truck to tow it with. Most all 1/2 ton trucks do not have enough payload capacity to handle 1,000lb. hitch weights with cargo and passengers in the cab.

👍Nice video. Buying a shiny new rig is so tempting. The shame is that now that I’ve done a ton of research and heard the horror stories, these RV companies need better regulations and requirements for quality standards. The stuff they get away with selling people should be against the law. 😔

The problem as I see it, is that in the US the typical buyer is more interested in price than quality. So if you compare our RVs to the ones available in Europe, ours appear to be junk. Cabinets made of crappy particle board with horrible hardware, etc. Our RV manufacturers are selling as many as they can build right now, so there isn't much incentive for them to bring their quality up.
I really wish some of the European companies could sell their units here, as they have some really cool designs, but the price point would make it a very difficult market for them.

Daniel Locke yeah , I’ve watched a few videos of “caravans” they seem much better built! Really innovative also!

Notice that the volume sales go to the lower priced units. If the American consumer were to turn our backs on the cheap built units, the manufacturers would make what is selling. The worst thing would be more regulations. We are drowning in regulations with a large number of them not making any sense. As long as Americans buy cheap and then complain about the quality, this is what we get.

The average RV ownership as of 2016 is just 2.5 years. This is one issue.
Another is the RV industry is self regulated. The corporations which own the majority of the brands (Thor, part of Hathaway, owns almost all RV brands), set the standards. NTSB only regulates motor home passenger safety. They all must meet air quality and fire safety requirements. Which are minimal. As far as quality is concerned, they, the manufacturers, decide what quality means. Twice a year they put a little more lip stick on, add some new gadget or appliance, and/or change the color on these old boxes and we eat them up. Most of these RV are designed to last no more than 12 years. Some are built to only last five years. Those are mostly the light/lite models. The goal is for the consumer to not maintain the seals properly. Once the seals fail and leaks go undetected, the unit is totalled. Because insurance doesn't payout on water damaged RVs, they don't have a say in how well they are built. If the RV industry was held accountable for any leaks within the first 10 years, they would have one piece fiberglass roofs on with protected rubber gaskets sealing each cutout on the roof. This is why we must inspect our seals twice a year and replace the seals every couple years (depending on use, location, and if the unit is stored indoors or protected from the elements.).
Just becuase an RV is expected to fail after just 5 to 12 years doesn't mean it does. So long as you maintain the RV it will last. The days of delamination are gone. Newer sealants like Dicor are helping our units stay water tight longer. I still have my 30ft travel trailer I purchased in 08. I decided to keep it so I can go camping in the parks. It still looks great because it is protected from the elements. The seals are maintained before I take her out and when I winterize. Anything that loose, stripped out, or damaged is repaired. The interior is kept dry with a dehumidifier hooked upto the drain. All of the exterior vents are covered to prevent bees and rodents from making themselves a new home. So long as it is maintained and kept like new, an RV will last. However, we see them as vehicles. Our vehicles are always water tight. Our homes stay water tight for 15-20 years. Unless they are hit by a hurricane, tornado, or damaged in an earthquake. Well, our RVs are subject to earthquakes and hurricanes traveling down the road. Then we park them for six to ten months uncovered. All the sudden the next summer we go out to pack it up for a trip to find the roof or a widow was leaking all fall, winter, and spring. Or we didn't bother to winterize. Etc.etc.etc....
      Cheers!

It's cool that you are looking at the decor.. But knowing what I know.. Look for one w/ a fiberglass or aluminum roof and a Smart Converter.. Then u have something worth thinking about.. I heard that the Grand Designs were selling like hotcakes.. And the reason your not seeing the smaller ones etc. bunkhouses is the Dealers are not showing them because they Can't get the. too much production demand.. In their eyes, why show something u can't sell..

Hey guys, hello from Saint John, NB! You being from Maine means we're practically neighbours!
We subscribed after seeing you with Nathan and Marissa in Alaska! Alaska must be an incredible experience! We need to get up there someday!
We may have missed something so I have a question about the video: in the opening scenes, you brought an RV to the show. So, you already owned a rig or was it a rental?
Anyway, great job with the video...we're looking forward to more! We've been trying to do some youtube videos of our RV travels but you guys are way more comfortable in front of the camera than me 😀

Rob Long hey! Yes, practically neighbors 😃 Alaska and Canada are definitely an adventure! My bad, I didn’t do a good job letting you know what RV we were in. It’s Jess ‘s grandmothers . We didn’t have one of our own at the time. We had filmed that prior to this video. We shot a lot of video , but just needed to pick a spot to start videos so I chose the RV show. Lots more videos coming, I finally broke the ice and started editing. Thank you so much for watching😃 -Corey

Don't buy one with the new version round shower enclosure, of any RV manufacturer.. (lowest price gets the bid) and that is why all the new Trailers have them...CHEAP..... They fall apart during travel.. I work at a RV center and we get new ones in with broken showers.. more so than any other style.. And check for yourself.. Very flimsy..
