it's a full western grip most see something wrong with it but cant tell. The reality is the only thing wrong with it is your forced to slice on low balls and your timing is a LOT more scrunched. this is why she slices a little below the hip, other wise the BH is great and adds 2x the tops spin and control, but the last problem is overextension of the lower right back muscles and tendons which is why she looks very conservative in swing. a full rotation would most definately over stretch her and harm those muscles because of the area of contact, as a professional she uses a full western BH perfectly.
Andrew Andrew she was hitting topspin shots below her waist in the video just fine. And she routinely hits low topspin shots in matches with no problems.

Her backhand is absolutely one of the greatest ones and the best woman's backhand what I've ever seen. And, yeah, Federer's backhand is a perfect example with this.
Justine is easily one of the top 5 strongest and fit players in the Open Era. I will say NO female player has as fine a one hander as her even now. Amélie Mauresmo comes in second and Steffi Graf 3rd (albeit she rarely hit over the ball). Watching these videos shows the absolute beauty of a perfectly struck one handed versatile backhand. Id get aspiring youngsters to emulate exactly this.
I love the way she hits it. The stroke path is almost like a modern forehand in reverse. She seems to have a grip halfway between an Eastern and semi-western, which gives her better control on high balls (than a standard eastern would). She likes to lean back, but that's not bad -- it gives a backhand more power because pulling back on the hinge (the shoulder) at the last moment actually increases racquet head speed. For low balls, she has to lean back more to open the face a bit more, but she has the figured out. ;) I really like the lack of moving parts. Her racquet to arm angle is very much an "L" shape and she doesn't change it throughout her stroke, meaning that the wrist doesn't come into play, as Federer's and some others sometimes does. Her shoulder turn and the half-turn of her hips produces the power, using her shoulder as a hinge. The racquet head path causes the ball to be struck square (or close to it) at contact, and the shoulder swinging up and around accelerates the head up and across her body, much like a modern forehand does. Note the grip. It's almost a ham-fisted thing with her index finger only a little bit spread out. This is key. It allows the right racquet to arm angle and as important, it makes the racquet very solid and stable as she whips it across her body. One would think that people would teach the best one-handed backhand of all time more often.
I really appreciate your post. And yes, I agree that it is the greatest backhand of all time and that it should be the standard and must be taught to basically everyone. I've been trying to deconstruct this stroke of hers and I think that you have written what I think is the best assessment of it that is out there on the web. I have tried this stoke myself, and hardest part about it for me is the grip, which is the integral component. My palm is completely full of blisters, but when I do hit a nice shot the pain becomes worth it. And yes, the feeling I get is that there really is very minimal wrist involvement, only pure shoulder rotation. This shot gets tricky if I'm hitting a low ball, but when ball comes at me quite high, then it works wonders. I would like to get your opinion on the Wawrinka backhand, and how it compares to Henin's. Thank you.
Her BH was the one I modeled for high BHs. The extreme closed grip allows one to come over the over the shoulder balls instead of predictably having to cut down all the time. This way when you do cut down its a big surprise. When your shoulder is properly conditioned the Top is huuge and over the opponents shoulder now...yeah! This elimination of the weak high BH quarter is huge confidence booster and cleared the way for my vast improvement. The threat of the high topped Xcourt also opens up the drop shot up the line. This is my bread and butter. All thanks to learning Henin´s BH technique. Given her size disadvantage and her achievements against the behemoths - I rate her BH the best in all tennis for effectiveness. It was a feared shot like Stan´s is now. BTW its a semi western BH grip which is actually the same as a semi western FH grip - but using the same face. In fact on rtns I am looking to rip I do not rotate the racket 180 - just use the same face both sides. This is actually the original classic Western Game introduced by McGloughln, the California Comet in the 20s - topping off both FH and BH using the same face.
I used to hit my backhands like Justine meaning no flare with the left arm. I like the way she keeps her left arm relatively still instead of way out to the side after contract like someone looking for a big hug
There are more amazing powerful single handed backhands, but to me her bh is the most beautiful to watch. No wasted motions or angles. I just love the way she takes the racket back
@AkMachx There's a great slo-mo video of Wawrinka that I found really helpful when learning to switch from two hands. Very simple, clean, effortless technique. Although you've chosen a great one to model already in Henin's.
Justine was soooo athletic and strong for her frame. Her backhand has a flatter, lower swing path, which allows more penetration. The elite European one-handers (Mauresmo, Mandlikova, Gasquet, Stan) have that high to low backswing and finish way above their heads, brushing up under the ball for more spin. But obviously with a longer motion, theirs more inconsistency at contact. Justine's motion was shorter and more across her body
Yes, another slow-motion. Wonderful, too! Justine's got one of the best backhands in tennis, so, yeah, I love this slow-mo. I have to admit that I am biased toward women tennis players with one-handed backhands - I'm a woman, btw. I have a one-handed backhand, and I'm a lefty :) :)
Great Video. Justine was an amazing player! Go Belgium :) Advantages of this stroke. 1. Crazy topspin (and it counters topspin well) 2. Produces heaviest corsscourt shot 3. Pretty Easy Power particularly for women 4.long reach Disadvantages 1. low balls are really hard to hit.( This never bothered Justin because of her height and footwork) 2. contact point is far away from your body, so you can get jammed on the return of serve. 3. shot takes time to develop (can get jammed on serve)

wohooo man! finally Justine Henin, the best backhand on WTA! if you had uploaded this video before, you had not had to make a lot of one handed explanatory videos!! XD It's the book of One Handed Backhand
She looks to be using more of a semi-western backhand grip here. I just tried it earlier today and it really helps me keep the face vertical at contact, but that's me. Definitely more consistent with that grip, will be using it from now on.
It looks like she's using what would be considered a western or semi western one handed backhand. It's quite an extreme grip compared to what Federer uses. But it allows her to attack off it more on high balls, and since she's so short a lot of balls are going to get up high to her backhand.
Nice to see that even the greats hit stinkers once and a while, like at 1:30 where she's going too vertical with the racket and gets the mishit. Awesome correction tho at 2:37 - same shot, flawless execution coming across more. I loved watching Justine play.
@worldted It's actually extreme eastern, not extreme western. And yes, she has the most extreme when talking about high profile professional players. Wawrinka has a great backhand and an extreme grip as well, though not quite as extreme as Henin. Federer and Gasquet do not have extreme grips at all, they are quite neutral/basic eastern. Which is amazing considering the topspin and length of time the ball stays on the strings for gasquet, what a talent.
I'm sure a lot of people have their theories. I'm not really sure, but I think it's just a much more difficult shot to learn and takes longer to master than the two-hander. A reasonable explanation is that the need for results at a young age causes coaches to insist on the 2hbh.
