The BEST historian of the Spanish Civil War and it’s not even close.

What a wonderful overview of the civil war for those of us who are unfamiliar with the particulars of it. The pervasive mythology that develops around such events is part of what keeps some people from investigating many worthwhile topics (e.g., Soviet espionage during the McCarthy years.) Thanks for removing the myth.

Still many people today, too many people, in Spain and in other countries, identified themselves with one of the two sides who fought in the Spanish Civil War. That needs to end, because it is a source of retraumatization, and it keeps the civil war alive, not physically, of course, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. And that must end once and for all. One of the root causes of the war was the extreme hyper-ideologization of people's minds, to the point of losing touch with very essential aspects of reality. On both sides. And, to some degree, that is still happening among those people who still feel the urge to "defend" the side they feel closer to. Everybody needs to watch as much of the original footage avaiable as possible, ideally without knowing what side were those dead people's bodies from, and then feel the truth about that war. Everybody needs to let go of their attachment to one side or the other, and be open to learn the truest, most profound lessons that this war has for all of us.

What struck me is that a historian who is half-god in "hispanismo", a man with incomparable scholarly record, best global hispanista on recent history of Spain, agrees for 90 mins internet interview with a boy running own channel on YT. This seems so American to me. This could have never happened in a hierarchy-driven culture of my country

I agree. I'm from Spain and lived in the US for 17 years. It is very clear to me that US society is much more horizontal than predominantly catholic societies, such as Spain, Latin America, Italy, etc.
