    A very good lens indeed! But for me, in my use, the best ultra wide lens is the Olympus 7-14mm f2.8. For two basic reasons! 7mm (against 8mm) on the wide side is more important to me than 18mm (against 14mm). After all it is an Ultra Wide! The constant aperture f2.8 is also an advantage. For those who need to use a filter, such as ND, for example, Leica is the best choice (except for those who own the Em1x and Em1 m3, as they are cameras with integrated ND). But either way, it's great to have such good options! That's why I love M43! Thanks for the video! Greetings from the Black Forest!

      The downside of the Oly 7-14 is the flaring which is really bad with sun from the sides.

    I have this lens. I don't have a lot of complaints about it but I'm a little jealous of the Olympus 8-25 mm. The extended range would be very handy.

    Thank you! I'll have to make due with my Lumix 12-60 (non-Leica) and my manual focus 8mm SLR Magic lens (great lens) -- this 8-18mm costs as much as my G85 when I bought it new!!! But thank you for checking it out -- having the elements stay behind the filter threads for the whole range is great -- it'd be nice for other lenses to do the same.

    I bought the 8-18mm and G9. I took some interesting photographs of Morro Bay, Point Lobos, and Big Sur. I could screw in a variable polarizing filter. I'm heading out to the desert for landscapes there. It makes a great addition to my lens collection.

    I like the lens. It is good. I need filters for video work. That is a must. No NDs is so great a thing for video to me. Any lens that does not take filters is useless to me.
    My dream lens would have image stabilization (not that important at 8mm but at very low light and 18mm it could come handy when you need dual stabilization or on a body without IBIS). I would really prefer constant aperture. That put me off a long time from this lens. Anything faster than F2.8 like F2.0 would make a huge deal at low light. That drives me sometimes to Sigma 18-35 with Metabones.

    I'd love this lens for stills. The 18mm is close to normal FOV so don't have to swap lens unlike the 7-14mm. The Olympus 9-18mm over the years I have tried at the shops but can't seem to buy - optically I feel it isn't as impressive

    bought a used (excellent condition) G7 a few months ageo. I am replacing my Canon 80ds. largely because I'm 76 and they are just too damn heavy for travel.. I am trying to cover the full range that I get with three lenses; 10to 24, 24 to 70 and 70 to 300. I'm looking for used equipment and while mu Lumis came with a 45 to 15 and a 14 to 40. I need an ultra wide. I'm busilly shopping for a good used 7 to 14 and I ned to watch the cost.

    Hi Matti, I just bought this 8-18mm to my G95. I like to use sometimes a couple of filters in other lens. Do you have some suggestion to ND and Polariser filters to this one? Thanks a lot for your channel.. I'm a big fan! :-)

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 года назад

      I don't use much filters, but for video I use the Nisi Pro-Nano ND-Vario and that is an excellent filter. If I was buying another filter, a polarizer for example, I'd probably buy Nisi, because I have good experience with their ND.

    Hey Matti. Quick question as you are one of the only RUclipsrs I know with this lens and a G95. When vlogging with this combo, will the corners warp and produce that "jello" effect? I heard that this problem was fixed for the GH5 and G9, but don't know how it'll act with the G95. =)

      @@talgatmendibaev It really depends on what you plan to use the wide for. If you want a zoom then the Leica 8-18mm is a good choice and if you are happy with a manual focus prime, the the Laowa 7.5mm could work. I have the Leica 8-18mm and I'm very happy with that.

    Let's be honest even though the latter is lighter and more convenient for moving around, the quality of image is not as good as the former two.
    The price of this lens is rediculus for cameras with such a small sensor in my openion. I went for the Laowa 7.5 who's image is good enough for the mf3 srnsor and does the job at ultra? Wide angle 📷👍

    Hi, is this lens perfectly rectilinear for video work just like the 7-14mm panny lens is ? Also does the f2.8 give an advantage for brighter shots in slightly low light interior shoots ? (using a G7 as the body)

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  3 года назад

      It's rectilinear and F2.8 gives one stop advantage compared to F4. It's the same as increasing ISO from 200 to 400.

    • @aengusmacnaughton1375
      @aengusmacnaughton1375 5 лет назад +2

      This has been noticed on Panasonic MFT cameras (possibly on other brands) when IBIS is on and the lens is a wide-angle or super-wide -- I'd say 14mm or wider. It looks like there is some interaction between the IBIS and the lens correction where the lens correction moves the image at the same time as the IBIS is trying to correct for motion. I definitely see this on my G85 at the 12mm end of my 12-60mm. I have not really seen it on my 25mm Lumix, 40-150mm Lumix or 42.5mm Lumix lenses. And I tried to make it happen on my manual-focus 8mm SLR Magic lens and I barely saw it. I presume because the camera does not have any lens-compensation routine for this non-Panasonic lens. A quick way to test is turn off IBIS, set you lens to the widest setting, and walk around shooting video (try 50/60fps or higher) -- but try to walk smoothly -- pan the camera and gently move the camera up and down. I think that with the IBIS off you should not get the "warping."
