Ultima Online launched with a dynamic ecosystem. Early on, players discovered that rabbit pelts were easy to get, and sold for decent money, so it became the standard early game currency farm. In a short amount of time, rabbits went extinct, which then led to animals up on the food chain going extinct. The devs had to step in and repopulate rabbits.
Not even that. Players were murderhobos that killed every mob that moved, which meant the dynamic ecosystem didn't have a chance and they just had to put respawn timers on wildlife.
I just hope with the whole dynamic events and node system does not make the gameplay so serious that it becomes another full time job MMO endgame content 😂
Something that would be cool to see is if there were some kind of "monster nodes" that spread monsters towards other nodes so that other nodes/areas could be flooded with monsters. You could end up with situations where some areas become filled with monsters if the areas player activity is too low, creating an opportunity for people to group up and clean that node/area. The question then becomes how to reward players for something like this? And what if players allow this to happen for these rewards...
@@Xillin Wow. about ten years ago. they used to tell truly awful jokes. Like "how does Naxxramas fly?" ans" it has four wings" actual joke that was told
Hell yeah! Great vid as always Xillin. Yeah having active, human (lol 🤖) GMs can create cool moments, but having them will also tighten up security for botting and other nefarious shenanigans. Having human eyes on player activity is healthy and provides needed context regarding player actions. GMs can be on site observing activity and either provide extra fun or protect the server from bad actors. It's a shame that other games don't understand how important this is, even simply for player morale and retention. I'm so happy Steven and Intrepid understand the value of GMs on payroll.
Active GM's ran live events for The Matrix Online also. Such an invaluable resource. You felt connected to the main characters from the movies. Without them, the game would've died off long before it did.
@@Oryyytlook up monster tokens. The highest tier tokens can be used to control bosses during sieges. Maybe they will adapt them to other portions of the game too.
@@Dagnar1478 Dude.. idk why I've only seen this just now this but goddamn that's fckin awesome! That's is such an ambitious mechanic and I hope they can make it work. They could do it for raids and stuff as well. I remember that game called Evolve. You get to be a high mobility monster lol I would love to see that level of chaos brought to a fantasy mmo setting. It's like having a player controlled Maliketh or Radahn vs a 40 man squad lol maybe that's asking too much but who knows.
When did they say they were going to have active GM's? I'm 100% all for it. It's like instead of an MMO, it's a massive D&D session. That would be insane!
Wow, active GMs! the modern generation of gamers wont know how to act. So thankful this game is being made and that intrepid are taking the chance on this game. Seeing the caravan and Node War update gets me so hyped and pumped for AoC. brought back so many cherished memories in other games where I am playing with other people and friends, having so much fun and building memories and stories that you just want to tell again and again. As they say, and this is so true: no school like the old school haha.
I haven't played SWTOR in years now. I don't really have an Ashes crew. I won't start thinking about trying to build a community for the game until Alpha 2 has started. I'm in discord pretty much every night voice chatting/gaming with friends. You're more than welcome to join in on that.
Breaking news: 75% of your channel content is about Ashes of Creation so stating you will hold back content until a release date announced is just plain stupid. 👀🤷🏻♂️
Story time with old man Xillin. I’m here for it.
Get off my lawn
he is a youngin 😆
Herewith my seat reservation, thank you. I'd like to be seated as close as possible to the sage, getting a bit deaf in my own old age, you know.

Yep, the whole dynamic ecosystem of early UO is a fascinating study!
"Devs had to step in" "repopulate?" Not even curious to know more...
That type of system is awesome in a game. Your decisions can effect the whole game over time.

Variety and active GMs will keep this game alive. Great video
Thanks bro!
In one of WoW private servers I used to play, GMs did this all the time. They usually took form of a dragon and siege towns.
UO was the only game I ever played with active GMs. SO much fun.
Active GMs in games makes the whole experience 5x better. You never know what they will do

I played Ultima Online and remember interacting with GM's who would spawn waves of mobs on towns. it was great!
I hope ashes does things like this!
I was chilling at brit bank one day and they spawned a bunch of Daemons. It was pure chaos.

Mandatory reading for Steven:
The assassination of Lord British.
I bet he knows all about that!! Such an insane story
active gm s used to exist about 10 or so years ago
In what game? I can't remember a game that recently with active GMs

I always forget about the Age of Conan.
Nice video man, love the stories :)

Ashes doing a lot of things other studios don't understand the importance of. We're almost there bro!

The Matrix Online is one of the fee MMOs I never played. They had active GMs huh? Now I wish I had played it.
i really hope they hire gm to do this kind of events.
It seems to be part of their plans.
Imagine if villains of the world are controlled by GM.
... Imagine if GMs triggered some deus ex machina actions in the world.
I wish they'd take it a step further like having players that meets certain conditions play as a world boss under a time limit or something like that.

It's mentioned on the wiki
They've said it from the Kickstarter. The GMs will mostly be used to monitor things like bots and exploits
