I feel like people forget that Ashes of Creation is developed with Unreal Engine, and will continuously be updated, whether we are on Unreal Engine 6, 7, or 22. Let the game cook. We've waited this long, and will get Alpha 2 starting in the NEXT QUARTER of THIS YEAR, that will continue up until launch. Whenever that may be. (2027 at the earliest imo)
I honestly have no idea lol. Could be less than my prediction for sure. I just don't think I've ever seen an MMO as complex as the one they are making. And full development really only started in 2021, IMO.
I think it's biggest hurdle will be the always on PVP.....not that that is a bad thing, but WOW has sure done it's damage when it comes to open world PVP....kill with no repercussion is a sespool of asshats just foaming at the mouth. I do hope the penalties will be hard to discourage it enough that casuals can have a good time and not have to worry as much as they would have in WOW while out in the world. Another great video.
IMO, ashes is a collection of niches, PVX, unrestricted OW PVP, old-school, sandpark... there are many niches that would normally drive players away, but ashes also has a lot of interesting systems. So the question is if this conglomeration of niches will be carried by its systems, attracting a generic audience to have a playerbase in the millions, or million at least.
I don't see this game having more than 60k monthly players (as in, players that log in for few hours, more than once a month) a year in its life cycle. At launch, sure, probably in milions, but this game seems to be very time consuming and time demanding, with severe punishment for death, and with favouritising sunking hours daily, while barely rewarding few hours of playtime per week. In modern day of gaming, with majority of MMO target audience working/having family, and by that limited time, and the genre being unable to atract younger players ( AoC does many things old school way and in contrary to current middle/high schooler wants and likes) it is condemned to be smaller game. The concepts and mechanics, as much as very intresting for a true MMO fan will be hard to accept for a casual player (majority of players and spenders), because they have completely different expectations. Open OW PvP (aka PvX), high risk high reward, a lot of time sinks, restrictions and forced exclusivity (houses, mounts, freeholds) are in contrast to what all well faring MMO's of today do, and I highly doubt that 180° turn will bring us renaissance and new Golden Age of the genre.
My guild leader is a doomer by nature, lol and since its biggest comp got restarted, it safer for them to go longer. But it would actually be horrible for the game.
There is absolutely no way they can develop all of the systems they have promised in just one year. 4 to 5 years sounds about right, and that is my biggest worry. Will people get burned out if the game takes that long to develop?
alpha always takes ages, once they enter beta the development process will ramp up since they dont have to construct the more complexe foundations anymore.
I really hope is not four years, that would discourage a lot of people as the game would be mostly solved by when it launches. More than a year and a half would be suicidal in my opinion.
Lookin forward to Ashes, but the one big thing that worries me is the always on pvp. I generally don't care for this. I like PVP when it's intentional for me.
The biggest problem with just looking at the boards because there are always going to be highly vocal people usually want something that makes their class the best or a type of play that most players don’t want or like. Killing endgame content by breaking the player base up.
World of Warcraft which arguably was a niche game as you had to be someone who was willing to devote all your time and effort into that game specifically which will be a similar thing for ashes what is Anish game even if it did hit 12 million players at one point. Mind you that the total world population is around 8 billion now and on top of that, a lot more people are playing video games than they were in past so MMORPGs are still a niche experience and especially a real one that actually both values your time and requires that time investment is especially going to be like that. Beyond that how many of those millions of players are people who wouldn't be interested in ashes on release but don't realize that yet because they haven't looked into what ashes will be like enough and have only heard the surface level
Basically, I agree that ashes of creation will probably become the mainstream MMORPG but you got to keep in mind that the MMORPG playerbase is still a niche playerbase for the exact reason that it's not something most people would like as it both takes a lot of time investment with a true MMORPG also requiring a shit ton of teamwork and honestly social understanding to be able to work together with your guild and also figure out ways to cooperate with other guilds in ways that don't result in unnecessary Wars when it could have been resolved by giving them one resource node and they give you a different one
If the alpha/betas go for to long that could also kill the game. Sure new players will join after launch, especially if streamers/youtubers can keep the hype. But if the core community is playing their characters for several years few are going to want to start completely fresh unless they lock out enough content/continents that alpha/beta players get to play the game without a "been there, seen that, did that already" mentality
Server wipes, resets, maintenance downtimes are planned for alpha. As well as facilitating testing selected systems. Starting fresh on launch is something alpha players will have been used to by the time the game launches. Alpha is for testing first and foremost, as Steven emphasizes every time this concern comes up.
If executed correctly, with the involvement of MMORPG players who grasp the evident reasons behind MMORPG failures, it can succeed. Games like Lost Ark and New World displayed significant issues, which were painfully apparent, I regret to admit. Ashes of Creation has the potential to address these issues and sustain a large player base successfully. For instance, by avoiding dry content in the late game and ensuring fulfilling questing experiences, the player base can immerse themselves in lore, gameplay, and meaningful interactions with others, without feeling punished for playing together as many MMORPGs tend to do in the late stages. Like NW has still no Ship and Cargo runs where are the Ship figths u still have no swimming like come on bro u can yapp about it for hrs.

i dont think game will take more than 3 years to fully release.. and lets hope not everything will be available during alpha 2 it might be really damaging for full release.. but i think that player that dont want any pvp will suffer since all raids and stuff will be openworld. we can only hope for the best
