Absolutely nothing like waking up in the morning in the UK and finding a deadlift podcast waiting for me. There is nothing like pulling something heavy off the floor. The most honest lift, you can’t cheat it. You are either going to lift it or you’re not. My favourite lift.
I've been recently experimenting with single leg deadlift and oh my gosh is it changing my life. I know that seems like too strong a statement. But I feel so much stable and great because of it. I had to back off of traditional deadlift because of some tennis elbow issues and I can't hold on to that heavy of weight at the moment. So this was a perfect alternative. I quickly went up in weight. I can definitely feel the strength gains and most of all I can feel it in my everyday life as i go about my business and my work as a mailman lifting heavy things and walking all day. It's hard to explain but I definitely feel a difference. I feel more grounded and stable and better balance.
I was always intimidated by the deadlift and it was Mind Pump who got me to start doing them. And now they are one of my favorite exercises. I found this episode so helpful and deepening my understanding of this fantastic lift. Mind Pump is the best!
Question from Japan 🇯🇵 Yes, the deadline can help the lumbar spine, especially the L4 & L5 area. My question is what are your thought about planks, for example single arm & alternating single leg planks for strengthening the lumbar spine? Thanks in advance! Tim, originally from New York, Brooklyn🎉
One variation I'd like to add that's accessible for non weightlifters is the snatch grip RDL. Obviously it's a great accessory for weightlifters but it's also incredibly useful for developing the posterior chain. For athletes, clean pulls and snatch pulls are very beneficial for power development too
Just an extra thought on the RDL. Whenever I program it I notice how hard it works my entire back -- especially when I go pretty heavy and slow with good form. The extra time under tension is killer and has really added to my overall strength and stamina.
I only started deadlifting 2 months ago but I love it. This is the exercise I want to see the most strength gains in. Thanks for this video guys, and it's great to see Adam back again!
Great show, guys. I used to pull my lower back a cohple times a year (usually doing someth8ng stupid like putting on socks or sneezing). Even with the inconsistent lifting I do now, I am not having any lower back issues. Thanks for all the great advice, and keep up the goos work!
This is one of my huge problem areas that I am currently hitting!!!! I have two herniated discs in my lower back and I stopped doing anything for fear of more injury. Guess what? I gained a ton of weight, felt like crap and came to the conclusion that my inactivity was causing all my problems. Now I am almost 12 weeks into weights and I hired a personal trainer. We are going back to basics in everything and I am relearning good form and wow I feel great. My knee pain gone and my back feels SO much better. Glute strength for me has gotten so much better. Anyway, I cannot get enough of your podcasts and I just love you guys!M. Thanks for all your content❤️
Such a fantastic episode. Thank you for explaining all the anatomy, postural benefits and providing real, practical instructions. Love Romanian Deadlifts🥰
New to fitness. New to #Mindpump. Currently studying 101 in UK. Loving this really in depth explanation on technique. 100% helping me on my journey. Thanks guys.
Much needed podcast since I lost motivation to incorporate deadlifts in my training. Been lifting per my body weight recently and looking forward to getting stronger!!!
I love conventional deadlifts! I train lower body 2-3 days a week, now I’m excited to add in sumos and single legs into my week. I love these types of episodes and hearing about different variations on the big 5 lifts! Keep ‘em coming!
I love you guys! You have by far the most honest and best information ever. My wife is loving the muscle mommy program. Keep up the great work guys! Thank You!
Once I put my heart and soleus into practicing the deadlift and perfected my form my chronic back pain improved. I’m halfway through anabolic and I’m highly motivated to master the sumo. I practiced it while listening to this episode and It turns out it’s more comfortable for my back and I can lift heavier- great episode! Thank- you. Sometimes I get too comfortable in my routine and forget to try variations. ❤
Thank you for the reminder of the importance of a deadlift, particularly a single leg. I am on holiday at the moment with no access to weights or a gym so have been doing body weight exercises to keep on top of things. This morning I included the single leg dead lift as I definitely have a weakness on my right side (impingement), I believe caused through years of wearing high heals and running (sometimes at the same time 🍷😂). Thank you guys, you have inspired this 62 year old to try a different approach and it appears to be working.
Deadlifts is one and only exercise that gave me the biggest gains of all time, both aesthetically and with building overall strength and transferring it onto everything else. It is a true King of All Exercises ❤
There is a hamstring head that is not worked in any of those deadlifts that is only used during knee flexion. So incorporating some type of leg curl is preferred for balanced hamstring development.
Deadlifts change my life! Hit by a car car in 1997 doing 60 while I was crossing the street. C4 C6 C5 bulge discs. Rotated vertebrae t11. No surgery 3 years of physical therapy and isolation resistance exercises. To come out of it. Spent the next 20 years avoiding deadlifts. Tried sumo deadlift 12 months ago change my life. Thank you. Almost putting up 300 going for double my body weight as my working set. Only had tried standard never knew the biomechanic. Can't do standard but sumo is unbelievable. Fixes everything
It'd been well over 2 years since I'd done a strict conventional barbell deadlift. But this ep inspired me. So, I decided to do two sets today. After warming up with 135 and 225, I put 315 on the bar. Pulled it for a relatively easy 2x5. No belt. No straps. Full pause at lockout, controlled negative, and dead stop on every rep. What's crazy is that I felt like I had at least 8 reps in me. But I didn't want to push that hard since it had been over 2 years since I did a pull. It just goes to show that perfecting technique over the years helps to maintain a bit of strength even with a very long hiatus. Very pleasantly surprised 315 felt relatively easy after 2+ years. I'm going to try and work back up to 405x5 by January. 👍
Exercising appropriately is such a hard thing to get right. I can do squats and deadlifts all day long, but have me do some lunges and my legs are going to blow up for days. Monday was a lunge heavy day for me. Knowing this I went what I thought was very light. Still the next 2 days my legs were blown up. I did a search for advice you guys have given about healing overworked muscles. I found you recommending trigger sessions and light pumps to help encourage healing. I almost facepalmed because that is the same advice my drill instructors gave us in basic 25 years ago. I had forgotten all about it. So yesterday I did some body weight squats throughout the day, and things are massively improved today. Thanks for all the knowledge you drop
I love doing conventional deadlift. I recently hurt my back deadlifting, because I was getting in my own head trying to go heavier and heavier last week and I over did it and possibly herniated my disk. I get an mri this Saturday, but once my back is good again, I will go back to deadlifting.
Thank you for this, because I can follow the Anabolic program and when I re do that phase of deadlift I can change from traditional to one of the other options. Thanks
I do deadlifts and I have no back pain. However when I started strength training (at age 42 presently 44) I was told not to do this and squats because I will injure myself. I have no such issue. I love deadlifts (sumo, conventional and rdl). It’s my favorite exercise. I do them twice a week per week. I have been telling myself I need to try the single leg. I think I would
Pros and cons of doing lighter weight and having your non working leg off of the ground completely vs doing a medium weight and having your non working legs foot lightly touching the ground until balance gets better? Should the DB be on the same side as the working leg or opposite or use 2 DBs?
So im maybe a half year into deadlifting. Dont do it a ton but when i do the heaviest weights i can currently do between 250-300, without fail i feel pretty darn good for the next day or so. Lots of energy and overall feeling good. Its like a hack for the body. No one ever talks about this. Is that normal?
This is such a good series, love it in combo with your Masterclass. Regarding the deadlift specifically, I think you guys tend to underestimate the trap bar. I get it can be more like a squat depending on technique, but it’s a very viable movement for a lot of people. The load factor goes up also.

Been behaving my shoulder after surgery. I tore it wrestling with a suspect at work and haven’t been training consistently since. When I get back to it I wanna do maps split and do some bodybuilding
I wouldn't consider this a true deadlift variation--more of an accessory--but I love incorporating halting deadlifts in strength programs where I'm only doing full deadlift once per week or so (especially if a sticking point crops up in that lower portion of the ROM, as it usually does).
Surprised Hex Bar Deadlift not included. To me, if you could only do one, this is safest, most athletic, most balanced (Quads, Glutes, Hams), and can load highest. Other ones are good … but if I could only do one exercise for leg day, and want to feel like I hit the most muscle in that exercise, Hex Bar is it. And I’m talking about the low handles and I actually throw in a calf raise and shin lift in lock out, harder to do with barbell versions.
Got injured twice in past 12 months deadlifting. No other exercise. I'm not gonna chase deadlifting anymore at age 45. There's other ways to work the hip hinge. Enjoying squatting, sled pulls, back extensions, single leg kettlebell RDL. Will do rack pulls (deadlifting off safety bars set low)
You forgot to mention the best variation of deadlift which is the stiff leg deadlift. Get good at stiff legs and nothing will improve your physique more.
How and why does Sal think deadlifts are so great in the first place? Somehow the deadlift got popular in the last ten years cause people can put a lot of weight on the bar. Same here, I just sat down with my coffee 😄 (I'm in Europe). Love deadlifts!
Exactly!
Gonna watch this later tonight but I wanted to note the fact Adam has been in all the thumbnails so far this week and I’m glad to know he’s back!
🙏🏻❤
I haven’t listened in a while. Was he gone for a while or something?
There was a family emergency and he was gone from several episodes last week. He talked about it an episode or two ago
I've been recently experimenting with single leg deadlift and oh my gosh is it changing my life. I know that seems like too strong a statement. But I feel so much stable and great because of it. I've got a hip replacement and even I'm working on both: master the deadlift is superiorly easier than squat for me and I love it!
1000% in love with these single topic episodes that are emphasizing on specific lifts and their benefits 🙏 BOOM! 💪🏽
I was always intimidated by the deadlift and it was Mind Pump who got me to start doing them. And now they are one of my favorite exercises. I found this episode so helpful and deepening my understanding of this fantastic lift. Mind Pump is the best!
Deadlifts are badass, especially conventional
When I said drive feet through the floor my client didn’t quite get it. I said “leg press the floor” he seemed to get that.
Love your content guys!
I 100% credit Romanian deadlifts for reducing my chronic lower back pain. I don't believe I knew how to hip hinge until I learned the RDL.
I did deadlifts for a herniation in my L5-S1 and it always reduced my pain and in my opinion, helped recover from it.
Question from Japan 🇯🇵

Only 4 months of heavy RDLs fixed my back ache, posture, hyperlordosis AND scoliosis! For people who sit at work it's a must have exercise 😊
Does it build the back muscles? Like thicker?
I only started deadlifting 2 months ago but I love it. This is the exercise I want to see the most strength gains in. Thanks for this video guys, and it's great to see Adam back again!
I’m a beginner too and it’s so fun! I think it’s my favorite exercise.
Good topic after doing deadlifts in my workout this morning. I'm glad to know doing these, and these variations are helping in the long run.
Woman here, recently discovered Deadlifts…. glad to be here ❤
Love deadlifts and all the variations of them! Great show guys

How about a trap bar? I have back problems can that be a good alternative version?

Love to deadlift. There are so many misconceptions about this beautiful exercise. Thanks for making a podcast about DLs.
I love you guys! You have by far the most honest and best information ever. My wife is loving the muscle mommy program. Keep up the great work guys! Thank You!
How effective is using open trap bar for deadlift? Find it being a less painful option given hip mobility.
Nothing wrong with it. If it helps you train with less pain, awesome! In the mean time, work on getting better and stronger hip mobility.
I've also switched to deadlifting with a trap bar because of the discomfort from the traditional/sumo stance.
Thank- you. Zerchers should've been included. Talk about a mobility&grounding builder, back builder, hip fortifier and boss making

Snatch grip deadlifts helped the aesthetics in my lower back.

Not a deadlift but heavy kettlebell swings are an absolutely amazing exercise for the entire posterior chain!

Looking forward to start working out and I figured my posterior chain/glutes would be the best place to start
My absolute favorite exercise. Glad Mind Pump always works it into each program!
Loved this episode!
I do the same thing where I start clients with RDLs. Glad I'm not the only one!
Love this and I am going to do all of them 😬thank you guys!
I love doing conventional deadlift. I recently hurt my back deadlifting, because I was getting in my own head trying to go heavier and heavier last week and I over did it and possibly herniated my disk. I get an mri this Saturday, but once my back is good again, I will go back to deadlifting.

By the way it wasn't my back lol

Deadlifts all the way! 💪
I ditched the conventional dead. Too much fatigue. But i still do RDL's also added SSB Good mornings
😂 Stick to kettles, boy!
What’s the difference between the single leg deadlift versus a single leg RDL? Or is there? The demo looked like a single leg RDL.
Hey guys can you do a segment on RDL's please
Is deadlift helpful for L1-S1 retrolisthesis?
Going to add single leg deadlifts after listening to how important they are. BTW i was surprised Trap bar deadlifts weren't included.
Are all these exercises incorporated into the maps programs?
im skinny and have no interest in being a strongman, but i love deadlifts. makes me feel strong!!! and farmer carry too
I'll be deadlifting until I'm 85 💪🏼
I train a few 85 year olds and they all deadlift! 😁

Can I make a whole workout Day based on these different deadlifts or is that asking for trouble? New to working out but I love doing the deadlift
Preach
What a great episode! I could really use MAPS Splits 😂😂😂😂
I want MAPS Split!
Hip hinge could be thought of as roll the pelvis over the head of the femur ? 😊
Been behaving my shoulder after surgery. I tore it wrestling with a suspect at work and haven’t been training consistently since. When I get back to it I wanna do maps split and do some bodybuilding
*Rehabbing
Good stuff as always!
What is the difference between Stiff Legged Deadlift and Romanian Deadlift?
Slight knee bend in rdl
Does collagen peptides/ protein for count as part of protein intake?

Deadlifting is def king
Okay fineeeeeee. Ill re-add single leg deadlifts into my programming....
I guess I should start incorporating sumo. I don't do it, because it feels awkward to me
Alright here early for once!
You forgot to mention the best variation of deadlift which is the stiff leg deadlift. Get good at stiff legs and nothing will improve your physique more.
Biiiiiig deadlift guy
Didn’t you do one of these already
No. They did a masterclass and some side notes but this is its own filing
8:38 Disclaimer: deadlifts will not make you impervious to bullets 😂
👍👍👍
Boom
Single leg deadlift, with one kettlebell, and barefoot....great for athletes!
💪🏿💪🏿
This comment is here to win the giveaway! Looking for my first maps program.
How and why does Sal think deadlifts are so great in the first place?
Somehow the deadlift got popular in the last ten years cause people can put a lot of weight on the bar.
Imo deadlift is stupid AF in general because
1. The lower back is most loaded and there isn't much muscle there in the low back. It's just the erector spinae.
2. The palms up grip can rip a bicep
3. Strict form must be used because there could be severe loading on the lower back.
Who does palms up? And easy fix is, just don't do palms up.
I can't so deadlifts. My back kills me.
Comment now... digest later. Throwing sticks at drums tonight.
"the best way to bulletproof your back literally..."
- Literally? Really?
Valley girl version of “literally”
Mindpump guys, its MEN that neglect the posterior change. Women do not. You stated that most of your clients are women, please use this knowledge or is everything you talk about based on the male experience? It seems so.
Bodybuilders should not be doing dead lifts period
please explain?
