You've definitely made my day. This really means a lot to me and has a special place in my heart. A violin in your hands is magic to my ears and I can only hope that one day I'll be able to play as well as you. Sincerely, thank you.
You know, sometimes it's nice to hear a song you love played as a solo. Playing the shire theme on just the fiddle gives it a very nice relaxed feel. Also very educational. I learned a bit about how to play the song.
So the only way to get that cool haunty sound is when he is switching notes with the tiny fast notes he switches fingers but slides the new finger into that next note. He literally almost slides his middle finger down the nail or his pointer and down the string all the way to the note giving it that bendy sound. Now I gotta go see if he does that on Braveheart. Its at 00:33, 00:37 and he is starting that hi note on the top of the string and sliding into it from almost off the violin. I guess i could draw a line over those or something to remember.
Any chance you could do a technique video on how to play in second and third position and how to roll your finger for vibrato? I'm not sure about anyone else but I have a hard time in the upper registers and making the violin "sing" while playing these songs. Beautifully played, as usual :)
Fiddlerman Thank you so much! I actually just found them further back on your uploads so now I feel silly. And I wanted to thank you for doing these weekly songs; they really help to keep up the practice!
Very happy to hear that. Thanks for watching. Join fiddlerman.com/forum if you have time. Great forum with lots of friendly violinists of all levels. :)
Thank you Amy. We are all doing well. It was a frightening storm and lasted longer than I was comfortable with but all is well that ends well. :) The shop lost two days of work but power and internet is up and running here. The storm slowed my Tune a Week release though.... Thanks for watching!

I stopped using one about 30 years ago. Sometimes I use a red rubber round pad on the back of the violin. Thanks so much and good luck with this piece. 😁
You've got to do Riders of Rohan! The Rohan theme song from lord of the rings. Does the little dot directly over a note mean half note? The v directly over means tap it basically. I'm guessing that first part after it says faster is second position on e string?
I'll definitely add it to my to do list. Thanks for the suggestion. The V over the note means up bow, and the upside down squarish U means down bow. Cheers!
@@1stfiddlerman Thanks! Look forward to hearing you play Rohan. There's an entire "ROHIRRIM" soundtrack from LOTR but Rohan isnt crazy hard. Hey little question, how come the sheet on your site are 1 note lower? I practiced this song with this video (and btw you sound amazing) and now i know the song out of my head but i printed the sheet and now im confused bcs it doesnt match what you play 😅
I just checked and it's the same. Make sure that you tune your violin to the same A as I. In case you didn't find the right sheet music, here is a direct link. Good luck and thanks for the nice compliment. fiddlerman.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Concerning-Hobbits.pdf
you mentioned tapping to find the note? Is this correct? I've noticed a tapping of the fingers with several violinists, I had no idea why they were hitting the fingerboard so hard.
Probably better not to tap but you are right, many people do it. It's better to test by tapping than to play so everyone hears it. However, if you are just doing it for yourself, you can pluck, tap, play or whatever you like. If it's not a performance it doesn't matter.
Everything is relative. Don't go too cheap if you want a real fair chance to keep playing. If you hate the sound that you are producing because of a cheap instrument, you'll be more apt to give up. If money is not an issue buy a better instrument. The better the instrument the easier they are to play. Great instruments don't need as much pressure to produce a sound verses cheap thick non resonant violins. If money is tight, you can get by with an inexpensive, but well set up violin like any of the Tower Strings violins. fiddlershop.com/collections/violins/brand_tower-strings
You could tune your instrument to the exact same A as I did. People vary on their A. Often the A is slightly high. If I don't use a tuning note, or someone else's A, I tend to tune to a 443 or 444 which sounds great to me. 😁 I never use tuners otherwise. A is normally considered to be 440.
