  • Today I address the safety of hydroquinone and answer your questions about hydroquinone causing cancer and liver damage.
This is an excellent comprehensive review article discussing the studies I mention here, as well as many others. The references cited in this paper overlap with studies mentioned in this video:

Wow thank you for making this video! I’m from Canada and over here , the hydroquinone is always through a prescription in a compound with other ingredients ! I had it sitting there in my fridge in fear it might cause 1001 problems internally and externally because of the lack of information I had! But thank you! I have terrible melasma which has really affected me and my family doctor told me that the hydroquinone would definitely help! Now I’m going to try it out! Thank you!!!!!

I'm glad I watched this. I have been thinking about using the Obagi nu-derm system. It has rave reviews on line and while I haven't spoken to my dermatologist about it, I noticed it does now say "hydroquinone free" and reviews aren't quite as good as they once were for the product. So, I guess this is a prescription now that you have to add back in?

OMG! Dr. Dray! This is awesome information! After many promptings from family, friends, etc, I decided to go to a dermatologist regarding the dark patch on my forehead. I explained that I noticed the patch spreads more when I'm in the sun. She prescribed a hydroquinone topical cream (4%), and a tretinoin topical cream (5%), because of my MELASMA. She also said I should use sunscreen. In the past, I was leery of using sunscreen because I have normal-to-oily skin. I know better now. Anywho, that appointment was in October, and I've been researching hydroquinone ever since, simply because of those fears you addressed.

Thank you so much for this Dr. Dray. I have a surgical scar that I've been meaning to use Hydroquinone for. Your video has provided all the information I needed about Hydroquinone. When you mentioned that adverse side effects can occur when it's used long term, what do you consider as "long term"? Do you recommend cycling Hydroquinone (i.e. 3 months on, 3 months off)? Thank you so much for all that you do.

Hi Andrea, I understand totally your intention to finish with the hydroquinone's demonization, it can be, I don't know a companies marketing strategy to outperform hydroquinone of the competition and then sell their skin bleachers?, it has happen before in the pharmaceutical industry, I only can buy hydroquinone as a skin bleach product in my country's pharmacies and your video gives calm to my life, because the message is "I can continue applying hydroquinone without any health danger". Thank you for so complete video.😊

I just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. My question is: do you recommend toner and (if so) what toners do you recommend? Or, rather, what ingredients should I be looking for/avoiding? Are they necessary? Toners have always been the only element of recommended skincare that I could never get on board with or find one that works well enough for me to use consistently. I apologize if you already covered this topic, but I did do a search of your channel and could not find anything specific on toners. Thank you!

This is by far the most informative video I have ever watched from a dermatologist! Given all of this evidence, is it reasonable to consider using hydroquinone while breast-feeding? I understand that no studies have been done to prove its safety, but again everything that you presented here seems to suggest that it should be relatively safe. I would truly appreciate your reply. Thank you!

Hello Dr. Dray! Can you please do a "Dermatologist reacts to skin hack video" I don't know if you heard of these so called skin hacks some of them even put vagisil on their face and one puts black pepper and potato underneath the eyes apparently for dark circles. Just in case these are potential irritants, it would be great to get your point of view. If ther are indeed unsafe to please educate the impressionable people watching it. Also, note English is my second language so if the grammar is wrong or if I can't articulate myself well enough, that's the reason why. Happy Friday! 😊
