The Lancia Stratos HF was a successful rally car during the 1970s and early 1980s. It started a new era in rallying as it was the first car designed from scratch for this kind of competition.
The production of the 500 cars required for homologation in Group 4 commenced in 1973 and the Stratos was homologated for the 1974 World Rally Championship season. The car won the 1974, 1975 and 1976 championship titles in the hands of Sandro Munari and Björn Waldegård.
The Stratos weighed 880 kilograms and the power output with the Ferrari Dino 2.4 L V6 engine was around 275 hp @7400 rpm.

Brilliant. I remember marshalling and spectating in Dalby and Kielder at night and being able to tell from half a mile away who was next on the stage. A screaming Escort was unmistakable, but the Stratos - whilst quite a rare sight - had that braying, bellowing engine note which made it a real favourite.
(Don't bite my head off, but I think the Metro 6R4 sounded similar...)

Ich habe einen Stratos. Und er ist ein Spaßmonster, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Als ich ihn damals sah war der Virus da. Doch ich hatte nie geahnt wie groß die Infektion werden sollte. Er stand in einer Garage unter viel Gerümpel. Ich sah nur das Heck und wusste was da steht. Ich musste lange verhandeln mit dem älteren Mann um ihm den Wagen abzuschwatzen. Dann fing jedoch erst die Geschichte wirklich an. Ich grub ihn aus und musste feststellen das er in einem erbärmlichen Zustand war. Seitenscheiben kaputt, Felge rechts hatte einen Schlag, der Motor war fest... Also hoffnungslos. Aber genau das war es was mich anspornte. Ich ging also dabei und nahm ihn komplett auseinander. Den Motor und das Getriebe schickte ich nach Lancia. Es dauerte insgesamt 5 Jahre bis er komplett war. Es kostete mich sehr viele Stangen Zigaretten, etliche Kannen Kaffee und Nerven. Ich habe oft vor Wut geheult wenn etwas schief gegangen war. Aber da war jemand der mich immer wieder aufbaute. Meine geliebte Frau. Sie sagte immer zu mir:"Kopf hoch, du bist soweit gekommen. Du schaffst das. Weil ich an dich glaube!"
